  • Will Benson RF | CIN

Reds' Will Benson: Sitting after three straight starts

Benson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.

After making starts at three different outfield spots and going 3-for-8 with two home runs, one triple, one walk and four RBI during the Reds' weekend series in Sacramento, the left-handed-hitting Benson will hit the bench while St. Louis sends southpaw Matthew Liberatore to the hill. Despite his big weekend, Benson is still likely to be more of a part-time presence in the lineup versus right-handed pitching while all of Austin Hays, Gavin Lux, TJ Friedl and Noelvi Marte are available.

  • Gavin Lux SS | TB

Reds' Gavin Lux: Idle against southpaw

Lux is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.

With a left-hander (Matthew Liberatore) on the hill for St. Louis, the left-handed-hitting Lux will head to the bench after he had started in each of the Reds' previous eight games. Miguel Andujar will serve as Cincinnati's designated hitter in Lux's stead.

  • Ke'Bryan Hayes 3B | CIN

Reds' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Resting in series opener

Hayes is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.

After going 0-for-7 with a walk over the final two contests of the Reds' weekend series in Sacramento, Hayes will get a chance to catch his breath as Cincinnati kicks off a three-game set in St. Louis. Sal Stewart will step in for Hayes at third base and will bat fifth.

  • Jarlin Susana SP | WAS

Nationals' Jarlin Susana: Undergoes lat surgery

Susana underwent surgery last week to repair a right lat tear, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports.

Susana suffered the injury while pitching for Double-A Harrisburg in late August, and the determination was made last week that surgery was the best course of action. It's unclear how long the 21-year-old's rehab will take, but he could be limited at the start of spring training. Susana posted a 3.51 ERA and 95:34 K:BB over 56.1 innings covering 14 starts between High-A Wilmington and Harrisburg in 2025.

  • Ji-Hwan Bae 2B | NYM

Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Demoted to Indianapolis

The Pirates optioned Bae to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.

He's being sent back down to accommodate the return of Jack Suwinski (groin) from the injured list. The left-handed-hitting Bae had started four of the last five games against righties, but he's just 1-for-20 at the dish during his time with the Pirates this season.

  • Jack Suwinski RF | LAD

Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Reinstated from injured list

The Pirates activated Suwinski (groin) from the 10-day injured list Monday.

Suwinski has been shelved since late August with a groin strain but is ready to roll after going 3-for-9 with a pair of home runs in three rehab contests with Triple-A Indianapolis. The 27-year-old had been seeing regular starts in the outfield against right-handed pitching pitching before he got hurt, but Suwinski would appear in line for a reserve role in the final two weeks of the season.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Returns to St. Louis lineup

Contreras (soreness) will start at first base and bat cleanup in Monday's contest versus the Reds, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Contreras didn't play in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Brewers due to general soreness after he was hit by a pitch on two occasions Saturday, but he's back in the lineup after one day of rest. The 33-year-old has collected a .786 OPS with 20 home runs and 30 doubles in 2025 in his first season as a full-time first baseman.

  • Pedro Pages C | STL

    Cardinals' Pedro Pages: Resting Monday

Pages is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Pages had made starts behind the plate in four of the Cardinals' previous five games, but he'll take a seat as St. Louis opens a three-game set with one of its divisional rivals. Jimmy Crooks will handle catching duties Monday.

  • Nolan Gorman 3B | STL

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Sitting in Arenado's return

Gorman is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Gorman had started in each of the Cardinals' last 29 games, but he could be headed for a steep reduction in playing time over the final two weeks of the regular season after St. Louis reinstated Nolan Arenado (shoulder) from the injured list Monday. With Arenado immediately slotting back into the lineup at his usual post at third base and with Willson Contreras (undisclosed) back in action Monday following a one-game hiatus, St. Louis now has its top options at the corner-infield spots available for the first time since late July.

  • Nolan Arenado 3B | ARI

Cardinals' Nolan Arenado: Returns from 10-day IL

The Cardinals activated Arenado (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list Monday. He'll start at third base and bat sixth in the Cardinals' series opener versus the Reds, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Arenado needed nearly seven weeks to recover from a right shoulder strain, but he's been cleared to return to action after going 1-for-13 at the plate in four rehab games with Double-A Springfield. The 34-year-old should be used as the team's primary third baseman down the stretch, which is likely to result in a downturn in playing time for Nolan Gorman.
