Waldschmidt launched his first career home run in the fifth inning before adding a sacrifice fly in the sixth. The 23-year-old has now hit safely in four straight games and has gone 5-for-19 with two extra-base hits, four RBI, three runs scored and a steal across six games since rejoining the Diamondbacks on July 10. Through 144 major-league plate appearances overall, the rookie outfielder is slashing .260/.308/.374 with 12 extra-base hits, 12 RBI, 14 runs scored and six steals.

Waldschmidt took a 99.6 mph sinker off his right hand while attempting to lay down a bunt in the sixth inning and was pulled from the game immediately afterward. Waldschmidt will make his return to the big leagues after being optioned on June 15. In his last 15 games in Triple-A, the 23-year-old slugged just .192/.250/.269 with no homers and one RBI. With Jordan Lawlar (hamstring) on the 10-day IL and likely facing a 4-to-6 week absence, Waldschmidt could have a decent path to playing time in center field. In order to make room on the active roster for Waldschmidt, Arizona designated Pavin Smith for assignment.

Waldschmidt enjoyed some initial success upon being promoted to the big leagues May 8, but pitchers adjusted to him over the last few weeks, and his strikeouts piled up. The outfielder posted 56.2 percent whiff rate against breaking balls and a 32.8 percent overall strikeout rate in 33 games for Arizona before he was optioned to Reno on Monday. Specifically, Diamondbacks hitting coach Joe Mather noted that Waldschmidt struggled with the higher spin rates of MLB pitches, and the organization wants to ensure that the 23-year-old is better prepared to handle breaking pitches before he gets his next appointment to the big leagues. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo added that he wants Waldschmidt to improve at controlling counts and not swing at "pitcher's pitches" as he makes his return to Reno.

With Jordan Lawlar recently coming back from the 60-day IL and Lourdes Gurriel (hamstring) on track to return from the 10-day IL this week, Waldschmidt looks like he'll be caught up in a numbers game in the Arizona outfield. Regarded as one of the top prospects in Arizona's system, Waldschmidt submitted an .881 OPS in his first 16 games in the majors following his May 8 promotion, but he's slashed just .180/.231/.262 with a 4.6 percent walk rate and 36.9 percent strikeout rate in his 17 games since. The impending assignment to Reno should enable Waldschmidt to get a mental reset, and if he's able to resume raking in the Pacific Coast League, he may not have to wait long before earning another call-up.

"I thought [Sunday] it was mostly a reflection of the lineup and who was not in the lineup that pushed him forward," Lovullo said. "But I like the way it looked and I'll probably stay with that for a little while." Waldschmidt has never gone more than one game without a hit since being called up and is batting .321 with five extra-base hits, five steals, seven RBI and nine runs scored over 17 games.
