Nationals' Dylan Crews: Pops sixth homer
Crews went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and a second run scored in Sunday's loss to the Pirates.
Getting another start in center field in place of Jacob Young (hand), Crews took Gregory Soto deep in the eighth inning for the Nationals' final run in an 11-5 loss, and his sixth long ball of the season. Crews snapped a 13-game power drought with the blast, but he's remained somewhat productive during that time. Over his last 15 contests, the 24-year-old sports a .310/.385/.466 slash line with three doubles, two homers, three steals, four RBI and 12 runs.

Nationals' Eddy Yean: Sent back to Triple-A
The Nationals optioned Yean to Triple-A Rochester following Sunday's 11-5 loss to the Pirates.
Yean was recalled from Triple-A prior to Sunday's game. He was brought in for the third inning and looked good in his major-league debut, allowing one walk and zero hits while striking out three across two scoreless frames. Yean will head back to Rochester but could return to the majors when the Nationals need more right-handed depth out of the bullpen.

Nationals' Luis Garcia: Another homer, stolen base in loss
Garcia went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and a stolen base in Sunday's 11-5 loss to the Pirates.
Garcia got Washington on the board in the third inning with his two-run blast off Bubba Chandler, his 19th homer this season (a new career high) and his 10th in his last 15 games. In his last 20 contests, Garcia has gone 24-for-68 (.353) with a staggering 1.271 OPS, boosting his slash line to .282/.313/.561 with 64 RBI, 42 runs scored and three steals across 294 plate appearances this season.

Nationals' Cade Cavalli: Velo down, leaves start early
Cavalli was lifted midway through the third inning of his start Sunday against the Pirates due to an apparent injury, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.1 innings prior to departing.
Fresh off striking out a career-high 13 batters while yielding just one hit over seven innings in his previous start Tuesday in Boston, Cavalli was unable to keep the momentum going. He needed 63 pitches to record his seven outs, and seemed to be pitching through an injury during the start. His velocity was down from its usual levels throughout the afternoon, and he was visited on the mound by the Nationals' athletic trainer at one point during the second inning before leaving the game one frame later. Expect manager Blake Butera to shed light on Cavalli's condition when he address the media following Sunday's game.

Nationals' Nasim Nunez: Heading to bench Sunday
Nunez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.
Jorbit Vivas will pick up a start at second base while Nunez gets a breather after starting five straight games. During that stretch, Nunez was unable to build on his MLB-leading total of 32 steals, but he went 3-for-15 with four walks while blasting his first home run of the season.

Nationals' Jacob Young: Left out of lineup Sunday
Young (hand) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.
Young will be kept on the bench for a third consecutive game while he manages a sore left hand. In Young's stead, Dylan Crews will cover center field Sunday and bat sixth.

Nationals' Eddy Yean: Receives first big-league call-up
The Nationals selected Yean's contract from Triple-A Rochester on Sunday.
Washington designated outfielder Robert Hassell for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster for Yean, who will be making his MLB debut when he gets into a game. The 25-year-old righty earned his first call-up after submitting a 3.69 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 43:19 K:BB in 39 innings over 38 relief appearances for Rochester.

Nationals' Robert Hassell: Jettisoned from 40-man roster
The Nationals designated Hassell for assignment Sunday.
Part of the six-player haul the Nationals received in the August 2022 trade that sent Juan Soto to San Diego, Hassell had seen his development stall out over the past couple of seasons. The 24-year-old outfielder reached the big leagues for the first time in 2025 and produced a lowly .572 OPS in 70 games, and he hadn't shown much sign of improvement while spending the entire campaign to date at Triple-A Rochester. Over 258 plate appearances at Triple-A, Hassell struck out at a 25.2 clip and slashed .216/.307/.291 with two home runs and eight steals. Washington will move Hassell off the 40-man roster to clear a spot for right-hander Eddy Yean, whose contract was selected from Triple-A.

Nationals' Zack Littell: Stingy in no-decision Saturday
Littell didn't factor into the decision Saturday as the Nationals fell 7-1 to the Pirates, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over six relief innings. He struck out three.
The veteran righty put together an impressive performance as the bulk reliever, tossing 57 of 87 pitches for strikes in the equivalent of a quality start, but opener Carson Palmquist had coughed up four runs before Littell even set foot on the mound. Littell has given up two or fewer runs in three straight outings to lower his ERA on the season to 5.02, and he's set to get his next turn through the rotation at home next weekend against the Yankees.

Nationals' Zak Kent: Sent back down to minors
The Nationals optioned Kent to Triple-A Rochester on Saturday.
The righty reliever has been mediocre during two stints in the majors with Washington since being claimed off waivers from the Minnesota on May 3, posting a 6.75 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB across 10.2 innings over eight appearances. The Nationals claimed lefty reliever Matt Krook off waivers from the Athletics on Saturday and will have him fill Kent's spot in the bullpen.

Nationals' Andre Granillo: Cast off 40-man roster
The Nationals designated Granillo for assignment Saturday.
Granillo has failed to impress over eight appearances with Washington this season, posting a 9.64 ERA, 2.25 WHIP and 3:8 K:BB over 9.1 innings. He hasn't fared much better with Triple-A Rochester, registering an 8.02 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 32:16 K:BB across 33.2 frames spanning 26 appearances. Granillo will consequently yield his 40-man roster spot to Matt Krook, whom the Nationals claimed off waivers on Saturday.

Nationals' Matt Krook: Lands with Nats
Washington claimed Krook off outright waivers from the Athletics on Saturday.
Krook struggled during his time with the A's before being DFA'd on Friday, allowing seven earned runs with a 5:4 K:BB over 3.2 innings spanning five appearances. However, the Nationals will look to help him get back on track in order to utilize him as a lefty option out of the bullpen. To clear room for Krook, Washington designated righty hurler Andre Granillo for assignment and optioned right-hander Zak Kent to Triple-A Rochester.

Nationals' Cade Cavalli: Next start coming Sunday
Cavalli will start Sunday against the Pirates in Washington, Kyle Williams of TheBanner.com reports.
Cavalli was initially expected to make his next turn in the rotation Monday against the Astros, but he will take the mound for the Nationals on Sunday instead of Miles Mikolas, who will likely start in the series opener against Houston. Cavalli is appealing a seven-game suspension that he received Thursday for his involvement in a bench-clearing incident with the Red Sox on Tuesday. Cavalli has a 3.69 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 102:29 K:BB across 90.1 innings this season.

Nationals' Jose Tena: Pops fourth homer
Tena went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Friday's win over the Pirates.
Getting the start at DH and batting third, Tena took Mitch Keller deep in the third inning for his fourth homer of the year. Tena has mainly been an option off the bench against right-handed pitching of late, amassing just 49 plate appearances since the beginning of June with a .222/.286/.378 slash line, one homer, two steals, five runs and five RBI.

Nationals' Jacob Young: Scratched with hand injury
Young has been removed from Saturday's lineup against the Pirates due to left hand soreness.
With Young out of the lineup, the Nationals will start Daylen Lile, Dylan Crews and James Wood in the outfield from left to right while deploying Jose Tena as the designated hitter. It's unclear whether Young's hand injury will prevent him from being available off the bench for Saturday's contest.
