Astros manager Joe Espada said Wednesday that Javier (shoulder) will make a fourth minor-league rehab start before returning from the 60-day injured list, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Javier made his third rehab start and second straight start with Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, striking out six batters over 3.1 innings while yielding three earned runs on four hits and one walk. He built up to 63 pitches (37 strikes) in the outing, so the Astros will likely want to see Javier push up his count into the 75-to-85 range in his next start, which will likely come either Sunday or Tuesday. If all goes smoothly, Javier could slot back into the Houston rotation as soon as next weekend's series in Detroit. The right-hander has been on the shelf since April 10 due to a Grade 2 shoulder strain.

The Tigers reinstated Mize (adductor) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Astros in Houston.

Mize had been slated to return from the IL this past Sunday, but after their series finale in Cleveland was postponed, the Tigers opted to delay his activation a few more days. The right-hander will be taking the hill Wednesday for his first outing with the big club since May 27 and could be operating with a slight workload restriction after covering five innings and tossing 55 pitches in his lone minor-league rehab start last Tuesday. Prior to hitting the shelf due to right adductor inflammation, Mize went 2-3 and posted a 2.27 ERA and 0.97 WHIP over 47.2 innings in his nine starts with Detroit.

The Astros will skip Burrows' next turn in the rotation, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Burrows has been tagged for 16 runs (13 earned) while serving up five home runs over 15 innings covering his last three starts. He's posted a 5.86 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 14 outings this season. Burrows will be available out of the bullpen this weekend, and the righty indicated he plans to piggyback behind Tatsuya Imai on Friday night against the Guardians. While Burrows could rejoin the rotation next week, his role is tenuous due to Cristian Javier (shoulder) being due back soon.

Mahle (hamstring) allowed one earned run on one hit and five walks while striking out three over three innings in Triple-A Sacramento's 10-1 win over Oklahoma City on Tuesday.

Mahle hasn't played in the big leagues since May 26 after landing on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, but he's progressing toward a return to San Francisco. The veteran right-hander struggled with his command Tuesday, issuing five walks while throwing 33 of his 63 pitches for strikes, though he limited the damage to just one run. Before going on the IL, the 31-year-old posted a 6.04 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 57:24 K:BB across 56.2 innings in 11 starts.

Canning will serve as the Padres' primary pitcher Wednesday in St. Louis, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Canning has recorded a 10.12 ERA in the first inning this season and lefties are slashing .370/.475/.696 off him, so the Padres will avoid having the right-hander face lefties JJ Wetherholt and Alec Burleson in the first frame. Bradgley Rodriguez will take the ball first for the Padres on Wednesday as an opener.

Marquez was promoted from Single-A Clearwater to High-A Jersey Shore on Wednesday.

Marquez has been one of the top breakout pitchers in the lower levels of the minors this year. He flashed potential at the end of 2025 at Single-A, and returned to that level to log a 1.86 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 47:10 K:BB in 29 innings across six appearances. Marquez is on pace to finish the year as a top 100 prospect.

Melton (back) is listed as the Tigers' probable starting pitcher for Saturday's game against the White Sox in Detroit, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Detroit scratched Melton ahead of his previously scheduled start Monday in Houston after he experienced general back tightness leading up to the contest, but he's apparently recovered well from the injury over the past couple of days. The Tigers will have the luxury of managing Melton's workload Saturday if they want to go that route, as Keider Montero's recent move out of the rotation provides the team with another option in the bullpen who's capable of covering multiple innings. Melton has fared well thus far in his four starts for Detroit since returning from a season-opening stint on the injured list, turning in a 2.81 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB across 25.2 innings.

Griffin didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Royals, allowing one run on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six.

The 30-year-old lefty produced his second straight quality start and seventh of the season on 100 pitches (74 strikes), but Griffin saw his eighth win slip away when the Nationals' bullpen coughed up a two-run lead in the top of the seventh inning. Griffin has been locked in over his last five outings, posting a 1.93 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 26:5 K:BB though 28 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Phillies.

Matthews (3-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Rangers after allowing two runs on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out four without issuing a walk.

Matthews has been involved in the decision in each of his seven starts this season. This was a big bounce-back outing after he gave up seven runs on nine hits across six innings in a road loss to the Tigers the last time out. Matthews has five quality starts already and has pitched at least six frames in all but one of his seven appearances. He'll take a 4.78 ERA and 1.18 WHIP to his next start, scheduled for next week at home versus the Dodgers.

Rocker (2-6) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Twins after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits -- including two home runs -- and two walks across 3.1 innings. He struck out four.

The six earned runs allowed established a new season-high mark for Rocker, who had given up two or fewer in five of his previous six outings. His inconsistencies on a game-to-game basis have hurt his appeal, as he's not a pitcher who can produce above-average strikeout rates or regularly pitch deep into games. He owns a 4.17 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 14 appearances (13 starts) and 69 innings in 2026. Rocker is in line to make his next start next week on the road against the Marlins.
