  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Blanks O's for fourth win

Boyd (4-1) picked up the win in Tuesday's 5-2 victory over the Orioles, allowing three hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven. The veteran southpaw delivered his second quality start of the season on an impressive 93 pitches (64 strikes), but Ryan Rolison coughed up the combined shutout in the seventh inning. Boyd has looked good since returning from the injured list in late June, and over three trips to the mound he's posted a 1.72 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB in 15.2 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come Sunday in Cincinnati in the Cubs' final game before the All-Star break.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Goes just deep enough to nab win

Boyd (3-1) earned the win over San Diego on Tuesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two batters over five-plus innings. Boyd made just his second appearance since returning from a lengthy absence due to injuries to his knee and shoulder, and he was limited to 76 pitches for a second straight start. That was enough to get him through five-plus innings, however, and consequently allowed him to get his third victory of the campaign. The left-hander was knocked for two long balls and departed having allowed two runners to reach base without recording an out in the sixth, but Javier Assad was able to get out of the jam without letting either inherited runner score. Boyd has been fairly effective so far since coming off the IL, yielding three runs across 9.2 frames with a 6:4 K:BB across his two starts. He's lined up to next face the Orioles in Baltimore.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Rusty but effective in return

Boyd allowed four hits and issued four walks while striking out four batters over 4.2 scoreless innings during a no-decision against the Mets on Thursday. Boyd made his return after missing over seven weeks due to a knee injury and subsequent shoulder issue. The lefty kept New York off the scoreboard, though he struggled with his control, throwing just 46 of 76 pitches for strikes and issuing four free passes. Boyd did, however, get a hearty 14 whiffs and recorded big outs when needed, twice stranding a runner on third base. He was understandably on a limited pitch count following the lengthy absence and may need a couple more outings before he's ready for a full workload. The veteran hurler's next start is tentatively slated to be against the Padres in Chicago.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Activated ahead of Thursday's start

The Cubs activated Boyd (shoulder/knee) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Vinnie Duber of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Boyd will make his return to the Cubs' rotation Thursday with a start in Queens against the Mets. The left-hander has not started a game at the big-league level since early May, as he's been shelved by meniscus surgery and shoulder soreness. Boyd tossed 59 pitches over four innings in his final rehab start, so his workload will be limited Thursday.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Confirmed for return Thursday

Boyd (shoulder/knee) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Thursday's game against the Mets, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Cubs manager Craig Counsell previously noted that Boyd would rejoin the rotation this week, and now the specific date has been confirmed. Boyd has been sidelined since early May, first due to meniscus surgery and later because of shoulder soreness. He threw 59 pitches over four innings in his final rehab start, so Boyd will likely be somewhat limited Thursday from a workload perspective.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Rejoining rotation this week

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Monday that Boyd (shoulder/knee) will return from the 15-day injured list to make his next start in the majors, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. As long as inclement weather doesn't force the Cubs to alter their rotation, Boyd appears poised to start Thursday's road game versus the Mets. The veteran left-hander has been shelved since early May, first due to meniscus surgery and later because of shoulder soreness. He's collected a 6.00 ERA and 31:6 K:BB over 24 innings covering five starts for the Cubs this season.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Sharp in four-inning rehab start

Boyd (shoulder/knee) struck out seven and allowed two hits and no walks over four scoreless innings Saturday in a rehab start with High-A South Bend Boyd covered 59 pitches (40 strikes) in the appearance, his first in the minors in two weeks after he experienced renewed soreness in his left shoulder coming out of a June 6 start with Triple-A Iowa. The southpaw was initially placed on the 15-day injured list May 6 after requiring a meniscectomy for his left knee, but he's since healed up from that procedure and appears to be bouncing back well from the minor setback with his shoulder. Per MLB.com, Boyd will rejoin the Cubs and will throw a bullpen session in New York on Monday, and if all goes well, he could be reinstated from the IL to make his next start with the big club Thursday against the Mets or during its weekend series in Milwaukee.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Restarting assignment Saturday

Boyd (knee/shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment Saturday, Jared Wyllys of AllCHGO.com reports. The location of Boyd's rehab outing has yet to be announced, but it will be his first game action since he suffered a setback with his shoulder following his June 6 rehab outing at Triple-A Iowa. It's also not clear whether Saturday will mark the left-hander's only rehab outing or if he'll require additional appearances coming off the setback. If he is cleared to rejoin the Cubs after Saturday, Boyd would be lined up to make his return to the big-league rotation next week.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Throwing off mound Tuesday

Boyd (knee/shoulder) will throw an up-down bullpen session Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The Cubs will make a decision about next steps for Boyd after the bullpen session. Boyd had been slated to rejoin the big-league rotation this past weekend following last month's meniscus surgery, but that was scrapped after he developed left shoulder soreness after a bullpen session. Following the setback, it seems likely that the Cubs will ask Boyd to make another rehab start. However, more clarity on that front will be available after Tuesday's session.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Won't start during weekend

Boyd (knee) will no longer return from the injured list to start against the Giants this weekend after reporting shoulder soreness following his latest rehab start Saturday at Triple-A Iowa, Vinnie Duber of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Boyd threw another bullpen session Tuesday and didn't quite feel right afterward, so the Cubs will slow down the 35-year-old's recovery and delay his return from the injured list. It's unknown exactly how far his setback will push back his return, though a clearer picture could emerge once he begins to ramp up his rehab again. Meanwhile, Javier Assad figures to be a top candidate to start in Boyd's place after pitching 6.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen Sunday.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Due back in rotation next weekend

Boyd (knee) has completed his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa and is expected to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of the Cubs' three-game series in San Francisco next weekend, Matt Carlson of the Associated Press reports. Boyd made his second and final start with Iowa on Saturday, yielding five earned runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and one walk while striking out five over five innings. Though Boyd's command was a bit off during the start, more important was the fact that he was able to build up to 83 pitches while steering clear of any setbacks with his left knee. The southpaw has been limited to just five starts with the Cubs this season while having missed three weeks in April due to a biceps strain and another four weeks due to the meniscectomy he required May 7, but his impending return from the shelf comes at an especially convenient time with Jameson Taillon set to go on the IL after straining his hamstring Sunday. Boyd should slide right into Taillon's spot in the rotation when it comes up again Friday or Saturday.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Making another rehab start Saturday

Boyd (knee) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. If the rehab start goes well for Boyd on Saturday, he will rejoin Chicago afterward. The southpaw made his most recent rehab start Sunday, when he allowed two earned runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts across four innings.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Goes four innings in rehab start

Boyd (knee) struck out two batters and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk across four innings Sunday in a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa. The southpaw required a meniscectomy on his left knee May 7 but has made a swift recovery from the procedure, as he resumed facing hitters May 22 before receiving the green light to report to Iowa. During Sunday's outing, Boyd tossed 63 pitches (41 strikes) while inducing five whiffs and averaging 93.1 mph with his four-seamer, which was up about a half-tick from his average over five starts with Chicago (92.5 mph). According to Marquee Sports Network, Cubs manager Craig Counsell said he received good feedback from Boyd's rehab start and noted that the lefty is set to rejoin the team in Chicago on Monday. Though Boyd had been expected to make one more rehab start to get further stretched out before returning from the 15-day injured list, the Cubs could elect to activate him early to make an abbreviated start during this weekend's series versus the Giants if he checks out well during his upcoming bullpen session.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Undergoes meniscus surgery

Boyd underwent a successful menisectomy Thursday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Boyd did not need a full repair of his meniscus, with Cubs manager Craig Counsell saying the surgery was "minor" and the club hopes to get the left-hander back in around six weeks. Jordan Wicks (elbow) and Javier Assad are candidates to grab Boyd's spot in the Cubs' rotation.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Placed on 15-day IL

The Cubs placed Boyd (knee) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, retroactive to Monday. The move comes after Cubs manager Craig Counsell announced that Boyd will undergo surgery to repair a meniscus injury in his left knee. The veteran southpaw's recovery timeline will come into better focus once he undergoes the procedure, and there remains a possibility that he will be available to pitch again this season, though that may not happen until after the All-Star break. Jordan Wicks (elbow) is on a rehab assignment and is inching closer to being activated from the 15-day IL, but the Cubs may have to turn to an arm from Triple-A or a bullpen option like Ben Brown or Javier Assad to fill in for Boyd in the short term.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Getting surgery for meniscus injury

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters Wednesday that Boyd will undergo surgery to repair a meniscus injury in his left knee, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Boyd sustained the injury while at home rather than during his last start against the Diamondbacks on Sunday, per Patrick Mooney of The Athletic. A timeline for Boyd's recovery won't be known until after he undergoes surgery, but he'll likely be out until after the All-Star break and may not be ready to return until the 2027 season. With Boyd slated to go on the IL, the Cubs may move Ben Brown or Javier Assad from the bullpen to the rotation or call up an arm from Triple-A Iowa like Charlie Barnes, at least until Jordan Wicks (elbow) is cleared to return from the 15-day IL.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Fans five in return to rotation

Boyd didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Phillies, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five across 4.2 innings. The Cubs activated Boyd (biceps) from the 15-day injured list right before Wednesday's start, and the veteran delivered a solid outing before making way for Ben Brown, who earned the win after tossing 2.1 scoreless frames. Boyd couldn't complete five innings and exited after tossing 84 pitches, though he should be ready for a bigger workload in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for next week on the road against the Padres. Boyd has given up four runs (three earned) on 10.1 innings over his last two outings, which is a clear improvement from an Opening Day start in which he gave up six runs on 3.2 frames against the Nationals.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Reinstated before Wednesday's start

The Cubs activated Boyd (biceps) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. Boyd is set to rejoin the rotation with a start Wednesday against the Phillies after missing the past two-plus weeks with a left biceps strain. The left-hander threw 64 pitches and went 3.2 innings in his lone rehab outing last Thursday, so he might not be ready for a full workload in his first start back from the injured list.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: On track to be activated Wednesday

The Cubs are expected to activate Boyd (biceps) from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's home game versus the Phillies, MLB.com reports. Placed on the shelf April 6 due to a left biceps strain, Boyd looks poised to return from the IL in just over the minimum amount of time after checking out well following his rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Iowa. Boyd tossed 3.2 innings and 64 pitches in his appearance for Iowa, striking out six batters while allowing three earned runs on four hits and one walk. He could be operating with a light workload restriction Wednesday but should be capable of reaching the five innings he would need to hit to qualify for a win.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Set for rehab start Thursday

Boyd (biceps) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register reports. Boyd is expected to require just the one rehab outing, setting him up to rejoin the Cubs' rotation as soon as Tuesday at Wrigley Field against the Phillies. The veteran southpaw has missed the last two weeks of action with a left biceps strain. Boyd allowed eight runs (seven earned) with a 17:3 K:BB over 9.1 innings in his first two starts of the season before getting hurt.
