Top Yankees News

  • Yankees' Paul Blackburn: Fans three as opener

Blackburn took a no-decision Thursday against the Rays, allowing one run on two hits and no walks in two innings. He struck out three.

Blackburn served as opener for the Yankees on Thursday in a bullpen game, serving up a solo home run to the red-hot Junior Caminero in the first inning. However, the three punchouts were a season high for the 30-year-old right-hander, who has made 29 relief appearances as opposed to a pair of brief starts this year. Blackburn hasn't offered much fantasy viability but has been an effective member of New York's pitching staff, posting a 2.31 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 35:15 K:BB over 46.2 innings.

  • Yankees' Max Schuemann: Playing time on rise

Schuemann will start in left field and bat seventh in Thursday's game against the Rays.

The 29-year-old has been up with the Yankees since April 28 following his call-up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but it wasn't until May 7 that he made his first start. Though Schuemann continued to see scarce opportunities over his first two months with the big club, he's finally begun gaining some traction in the outfield in July while the Yankees navigate the absences of Aaron Judge (rib) and Giancarlo Stanton (calf). Schuemann will stick in the starting nine for the fifth time in six games after going 3-for-9 with a home run and two walks through his first four contests of the month.

  • Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Losing out on playing time

Volpe is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rays.

Volpe has mostly been handling a near-everyday role since being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 12, but his playing time has tailed off lately while he's fallen into a 5-for-35 skid at the plate over his last 12 games. The Yankees will keep Volpe on the bench for the third time in four contests, with two of those absences coming against righties and one coming against a lefty. Even though New York still has a couple openings in the lineup while Aaron Judge (rib) and Giancarlo Stanton (calf) are stuck on the injured list, Jose Caballero, Jasson Dominguez and Max Schuemann all appear to be getting prioritized ahead of Volpe.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Resumes running after PRP injection

Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Thursday that Stanton (calf) has resumed running after receiving a PRP injection, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

The 36-year-old has been sidelined since late April due to recurring calf issues. He initially suffered a strained right calf before suffering a new strain in the same calf while rehabbing last month. It's unclear what kind of timeline Stanton is looking at for his potential return to the lineup. He slashed .256/.302/.422 with three home runs, 14 RBI, eight runs scored, one stolen base and a 6:29 BB:K across 96 trips to the plate before going down with the injuries.

  • Yankees' George Lombard: Resumes hitting and fielding

Manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Lombard (finger) has resumed hitting and fielding and is close to a return, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

The Yankees' top prospect, Lombard remains on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but is seemingly closing in on a return. In 42 games at Triple-A this season, Lombard has slashed .231/.381/.385 with four home runs, 15 RBI, 30 runs scored, eight stolen bases and a 35:42 BB:K across 197 plate appearances. He'll be a candidate to make his major-league debut at some point this summer.

  • Yankees' Aaron Judge: Set for MRI during All-Star break

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday that Judge will get follow-up imaging on his injured rib during the All-Star break, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.

After Judge was placed on the 10-day injured list June 5 due to a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side, the Yankees relayed that the outfielder would be re-evaluated in 4-to-6 weeks. The Yankees will ultimately wait until around the six-week mark to send Judge in for re-imaging, after which he could be cleared to resume baseball activities if the MRI shows that his rib has healed as anticipated. Cashman reiterated that the Yankees fully expect Judge to return to action at some point this season.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Playing catch Thursday

Rodon (elbow) will play catch Thursday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.

It will be the first time Rodon has done any throwing since he landed on the 15-day injured list Friday with left elbow inflammation. The Yankees will ease Rodon back into a throwing progression and do not expect the southpaw back until at least early-to mid-August.

  • Yankees' Paul Blackburn: Drawing start in bullpen game

Blackburn will be the Yankees' starting pitcher in Thursday's bullpen game versus the Rays.

Blackburn went 1.1 scoreless innings in Tuesday's game, so he'll be pitching on just one day of rest. The righty hasn't thrown more than 23 pitches in an outing in three weeks, so he will likely not cover more than a couple frames Thursday.

  • Yankees' Gerrit Cole: Logs quality start in loss

Cole (3-4) took the loss against the Rays on Wednesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts over 6.1 innings.

Cole yielded a run in three separate frames and surrendered nine hard-hit balls but filled the strike zone with 69 strikes on 97 pitches in his fourth quality start of the campaign. The 35-year-old has been more good than bad since returning from the injured list, allowing three or fewer earned runs in six of his nine starts. He'll head into the All-Star break with a 4.04 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 47:11 K:BB across 49 innings.

  • Yankees' Ryan McMahon: Idle against lefty

McMahon is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.

The left-handed-hitting McMahon will hit the bench for the second day in a row while the Rays send another lefty starter (Shane McClanahan) to the bump. Amed Rosario will cover third base in McMahon's stead and will bat third.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Exiting starting nine

Grisham is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.

Grisham started each of the first five games for the Yankees upon his return from the injured list last week, but the left-handed batter will take a seat Wednesday as the Rays send southpaw Shane McClanahan to the bump. Max Schuemann will cover center field for New York.

  • Yankees' Jazz Chisholm: Sitting out versus left-hander

Chisholm is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in Tampa Bay.

Chisholm has just a .448 OPS with a 2:14 BB:K over his last 30 plate appearances, so he will get a day off to recalibrate. Jose Caballero is drawing a start at second base for the Yankees and will bat ninth.

  • Yankees' Ben Rice: Three-run homer in loss

Rice went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Rays.

Rice gave the Yankees an early lead with a three-run shot off Ian Seymour in the third inning. The first-time All-Star has been on fire, hitting safely in six of his past seven games while going deep four times during that stretch. For the year, he's slashing .273/.364/.577 with 60 RBI, 60 runs scored and two steals while already matching his home-run total from last season (26).
