  • J.P. Crawford SS | SEA

Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Back in lineup Friday

Crawford (triceps) is hitting leadoff and playing shortstop Friday against the Royals.

Crawford was scratched from the lineup Wednesday against the White Sox with a sore triceps, but he's back in there following Thursday's off day. With Crawford at shortstop, rookie Colt Emerson is playing third base and hitting ninth. Crawford is hitting just .210 this season but has a .358 on-base percentage.

  • Luis Pena SS | MIL

Brewers' Luis Pena: Kicking off rehab assignment

Pena (illness) will begin a rehab assignment with the Brewers' Arizona Complex League affiliate Friday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Pena hasn't played since April 22, when he collapsed in the dugout at High-A Wisconsin after becoming overheated. It shouldn't be long before Pena rejoins the active roster at Wisconsin, where he's slashed .372/.462/.512 in 12 games this season.

  • Jose Caballero SS | NYY

Yankees' Jose Caballero: Activated from IL, starting at SS

The Yankees activated Caballero (finger) from the 10-day injured list Friday.

Caballero missed just 11 days with a fractured right middle finger, and he's back in the lineup at shortstop, hitting seventh, against the Rays on Friday. Anthony Volpe will head to the bench for the Yankees. Caballero has slashed .259/.320/.400 with four home runs, 13 RBI, 18 runs scored, 13 stolen bases and an 8:29 BB:K across 147 plate appearances this season.

  • Otto Lopez SS | MIA

Marlins' Otto Lopez: Rare day off Friday

Lopez is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the Mets.

It's a rare day off for Lopez, who had started the last 14 contests for the Marlins. Javier Sanoja is grabbing a start at shortstop in Lopez's stead.

  • Royals' Tyler Tolbert: Recalled from Triple-A

The Royals recalled Tolbert from Triple-A Omaha on Friday.

To make room on the 26-man roster, the Royals DFA'd Elias Diaz. Tolbert has appeared in seven games for Kansas City this season and is a career .273/.311/.364 hitter across 62 plate appearances. He's hit .260/.365/.288 with just two extra-base hits, five RBI, 11 runs scored, eight stolen bases and a 12:21 BB:K across 86 trips to the plate at Triple-A this season.

  • Trevor Story SS | BOS

Red Sox's Trevor Story: Undergoes surgery for sports hernia

Story underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia Thursday and will be sidelined 6-to-10 weeks, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Story was placed on the 10-day injured list last weekend and was seeking medical opinions for his hernia. He's opted for surgery and will miss far more than the minimum 10 days required on the injured list. Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have been handling shortstop duties in Story's absence this week and will likely continue to do so for the next month-plus. In 41 games this season, Story has slashed an unimpressive .206/.244/.303 with three home runs, 19 RBI, 16 runs scored, four stolen bases and an 8:57 BB:K across 176 plate appearances.

  • Ha-seong Kim SS | ATL

Braves' Ha-Seong Kim: Swipes first bag of year

Kim went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in Thursday's win over the Marlins.

The shortstop missed the first six weeks of the season while completing his recovery from finger surgery, and Kim looks like a player still scrambling to catch up. Over his first eight games, he's batting just .115 (3-for-26) with zero extra-base hits, but Thursday's steal was his first of 2026 and he's drawn a walk in three straight starts. Kim's also committed three errors.

  • Paul DeJong SS | DET

Tigers' Paul DeJong: Undergoing hamstring surgery

DeJong is set to undergo season-ending hamstring surgery, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

DeJong was placed on the full-season injured list with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday with what was described as a leg injury. It is now understood to be a hamstring issue, and the 32-year-old will set his sights on being ready to go for spring training in 2027.

  • Brayan Rocchio SS | CLE

Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Perfect in win

Rocchio went 3-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Tigers.

Batting out of the nine hole, Rocchio sparked a two-run rally with a two-out double and immediately scored on a Daniel Schneemann double. Rocchio's been rolling in May and is now 14-for-33 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, three steals, eight RBI and nine runs scored over the last 11 contests. He began the year at second base but has since moved over to shortstop after Gabriel Arias (hamstring) landed on the 10-day injured list. It was recently reported that Arias' rehab "hit a little snag" and will be out longer than expected. Whether it's at shortstop or second base, Rocchio's place in the lineup should be stable given his strong production at the plate.

  • Andres Gimenez SS | TOR

Blue Jays' Andres Gimenez: Not starting versus lefty

Gimenez is not in the lineup for Thursday's tilt versus the Yankees.

The Blue Jays are loading their lineup with righties against Yankees southpaw Carlos Rodon. With Gimenez beginning the game on the bench, Ernie Clement is sliding over to shortstop, and Lenyn Sosa will get the start at second base.
