Reds' Alexis Diaz: Picks up 20th save

Diaz picked up the save Friday against the Rays, striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning.

Diaz got his first save situation since July 3 and worked around an inherited runner to convert it successfully. He became the 12th reliever with 20 saves this season, and he has now converted 13 straight opportunities. The 27-year-old has pitched to a 4.34 ERA through 37.1 innings this season.

  • Robert Suarez RP | ATL

Padres' Robert Suarez: Blows save, nabs win

Suarez (5-1) blew a save but was credited with the win Friday over Baltimore, allowing one hit while striking out a pair over 1.2 scoreless innings.

San Diego turned to Suarez in the eighth inning after Baltimore got the tying run to third base with one out. The 33-year-old right-hander allowed the run to score on a sacrifice fly, sticking him with his third blown save of the year. However, the Padres would rally to re-take the lead in the top of the ninth before Suarez finished things out to seal the victory. He hasn't allowed an earned run in 11 of his last 12 outings, lowering his ERA to a stellar 1.51 with a 0.86 WHIP and 40:8 K:BB while converting 23 saves over 41.2 innings this year.

Mets' Ryne Stanek: Headed to Big Apple

The Mets acquired Stanek from the Mariners on Friday in exchange for outfielder Rhylan Thomas, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Stanek has struggled in his eight outings in July, allowing five runs on five hits and six walks and striking out eight over 5.2 innings while registering two blown saves and a loss. However, he's been a solid performer on the while this season while occupying a key late-inning role for Seattle, turning in a 4.38 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 15 holds and seven saves across 39 innings. The 33-year-old right-hander will likely work in a setup or middle-relief role in front of closer Edwin Diaz.

    Diamondbacks' Blake Walston: Faces hitters

Walston (elbow) threw live batting practice Friday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Walston touched 94 mph during the session, an encouraging sign considering he hovered between 91 and 92 mph during his three appearances this season. The 23-year-old southpaw is expected to be activated from the injured list sometime in August, but manager Torey Lovullo indicated Friday that the team was still determining whether he'll be an option for the big-league rotation down the stretch.

    Marlins' Josh Simpson: Facing hitters

Simpson (elbow) will throw a live bullpen session Saturday with Single-A Jupiter, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Simpson has been cleared to face batters after completing a pair of bullpens within the last week. Pirates' Ryan Borucki: Pulled off rehab assignment

Borucki (wrist) had his rehab assignment paused Friday and he's currently being re-assessed, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Borucki has made 10 rehab appearances, yielding seven runs across 9.2 innings. However, he may have suffered a setback in his recovery from carpal tunnel syndrome. A timeline for Borucki to return to Triple-A Indianapolis could become clear after his re-evaluation.

  • Janson Junk RP | MIA

Brewers' Janson Junk: Recalled by Milwaukee

The Brewers recalled Junk from Triple-A Nashville on Friday.

The move corresponds with Milwaukee placing southpaw Rob Zastryzny on the 15-day injured list due to left elbow tendinitis. Junk has spent most of the season in Nashville, posting a 2.65 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 34 innings. He's made three major-league appearances in 2024, with his last coming May 5 against the Cubs in which he allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two across two frames.

  • Rob Zastryzny RP | MIL

Brewers' Rob Zastryzny: Placed on injured list

The Brewers placed Zastryzny on the 15-day injured list Thursday due to left elbow tendinitis.

Zastryzny gave up his first earned run of the season during his last outing Wednesday, throwing 38 pitches while serving as Milwaukee's opener. He'll now be held out of action for at least the next two weeks as he manages an elbow injury. Janson Junk will come up from Triple-A Nashville to fill the open spot in the Milwaukee bullpen.

Cubs' Ben Brown: Moved to 60-day IL

The Cubs transferred Brown (neck) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Friday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Christian Bethancourt. Brown now isn't eligible for activation until mid-August, but he hadn't seemed likely to return before then.

  • Cubs' Keegan Thompson: Starting rehab stint

Thompson (ribs) is scheduled to pitch for Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Thompson threw live batting practice Tuesday and has been given the green light for in-game action. The 29-year-old has been on the shelf since June 28 with a fractured right rib and should require multiple rehab appearances before rejoining the Cubs.
