  • Cubs' Shelby Miller: Kicks off rehab assignment

Miller (elbow) began a rehab assignment Sunday at Triple-A Iowa, striking out two batters while allowing one run on two hits and no walks. Miller has made remarkable progress in his recovery from Oct. 13 surgery to repair a torn right UCL tendon and flexor tendon. Though a complex procedure of that nature would normally keep a pitcher out for a full season, Miller appears to have a strong chance at returning from the 60-day injured list by late August or early September after moving through his throwing progression without any setbacks and advancing to the final stage of his recovery process. Miller will stockpile appearances and will likely need to pitch on consecutive days at Iowa at some point over the next few weeks before the Cubs consider adding him to the big-league bullpen.

  • Cubs' Shelby Miller: Facing hitters in Arizona

The Cubs announced Wednesday that Miler (elbow) has been throwing off a mound and facing hitters at the team's complex in Arizona, MLB.com reports. Miller has seemingly progressed about as well as the Cubs could have hoped since undergoing surgery Oct. 13 to repair a torn right UCL and flexor tendon. Though the Cubs' main focus is ensuring that Miller is back to 100 percent heading into spring training, he looks like he could have a chance at making it back from the 60-day injured list at some point in September. A clearer target date for his return could emerge once he eventually moves his rehab program from Arizona to Chicago.

  • Cubs' Shelby Miller: Throwing again in Arizona

The Cubs announced July 5 that Miller (elbow) has resumed a throwing program in Arizona, MLB.com reports. Chicago isn't completely ruling Miller out from returning from the 60-day injured list in September, but his main focus is getting back to full health for the start of the 2027 campaign after undergoing surgery last October to repair a torn right UCL and flexor tendon. Back in February, Miller signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract with the Cubs that includes a club option for 2028.

  • Cubs' Shelby Miller: Goes on 60-day IL

The Cubs placed Miller (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Sunday. Miller inked a two-year, $2.5 million contract with Chicago earlier this month, but as expected, he will begin the 2026 campaign on the IL. The 35-year-old underwent UCL and flexor tendon surgery on his right elbow Oct. 13 and is expected to miss the entire 2026 season. In a corresponding move, the Cubs claimed infielder Ben Cowles off waivers from the Blue Jays.

  • Cubs' Shelby Miller: Nets two-year deal from Cubs

The Cubs signed Miller to a two-year, $2.5 million contract Friday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Miller will finish his Tommy John and flexor surgery rehab with the Cubs in 2026 before joining their bullpen in 2027. The right-hander will be 36 at that point, but he was excellent in 2025 between the Diamondbacks and Brewers before getting injured, posting a 2.74 ERA and 54:15 K:BB over 46 frames while notching 10 saves.

  • Brewers' Shelby Miller: Requires UCL, flexor surgery

Miller is likely to miss most, if not all, of the 2026 season after undergoing UCL and flexor tendon surgery Oct. 13, MLB.com reports. Miller had been hopeful of a less invasive procedure that would give him a chance to return before the end of the 2026 campaign, but ultimately he's unlikely to pitch again until 2027. It's the second UCL repair for Miller, who had Tommy John surgery in May 2017. He's an impending free agent after posting a 2.74 ERA and 54:15 K:BB over 46 innings between the Diamondbacks and Brewers this season.

  • Brewers' Shelby Miller: Hopeful of avoiding full UCL repair

Miller is hopeful of avoiding a full UCL repair of his right elbow following a visit with Dr. Keith Meister in Texas, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Miller needs surgery, but a procedure that's less invasive than Tommy John surgery would give him a chance to return late in the 2026 season. The reliever collected a 2.74 ERA and 54:15 K:BB over 46 innings between the Diamondbacks and Brewers this season and will be a free agent this winter.

  • Brewers' Shelby Miller: Slated for UCL surgery

Miller will undergo surgery in the coming weeks to repair the torn UCL in his right elbow, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. It's unclear whether it will be Tommy John surgery -- which would be Miller's second -- but even if it isn't there's a good chance he won't be ready to pitch again until 2027. The righty posted a 2.74 ERA and 54:15 K:BB over 46 innings between the Diamondbacks and Brewers this season and will be a free agent this offseason.

  • Brewers' Shelby Miller: Out for season with UCL sprain

The Brewers placed Miller on the 60-day injured list Wednesday due to a right elbow UCL sprain. Miller suffered the injury during an appearance in Monday's 10-8 loss to the Phillies. According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, Miller acknowledged that he could require the second Tommy John surgery of his career to address the UCL injury, but even if he opts to treat the injury with rest and rehab, he won't be eligible to pitch again this season. Joel Payamps was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to take Miller's spot on the 40-man roster and in the bullpen.

  • Brewers' Shelby Miller: Dealing with elbow issue

Miller exited Monday's 10-8 loss to the Phillies early with a right elbow injury, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Miller felt something "pop" in his elbow, leading to an early departure, which certainly doesn't sound good. The right-hander may be set for an extended absence, but more information on his status will likely come in the near future.

  • Brewers' Shelby Miller: Leaves game with trainer

Miller exited Wednesday's game against the Phillies in the top of eighth inning with an apparent injury, Jack Stern of BrewerFanatic.com reports. Miller threw eight pitches in the top of the eighth inning, allowing one run on two hits, before the Brewers' trainer came out to the mound to examine the right-hander. Miller was removed from the game and replaced Rob Zastryzny. Milwaukee has an off day Tuesday before resuming its series with Philadelphia on Wednesday.

  • Brewers' Shelby Miller: Set for Brewers debut

Miller (forearm) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday. Miller will make his Brewers debut when he gets into a game, as he's healthy for the first time since early July. The veteran reliever was traded from Arizona to Milwaukee on July 31. Before sustaining the forearm strain, Miller tallied a 1.98 ERA, 10 saves and eight holds over 36.1 innings for the Diamondbacks. Miller should be in contention for setup work, as Trevor Megill has been outstanding in the closing role.

  • Brewers' Shelby Miller: Cleared for rehab assignment

The Brewers sent Miller (forearm) to Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment. The Brewers acquired Miller from the Diamondbacks at the trade deadline knowing he would still need some time to work his way back from a strained forearm. Miller has been out for nearly a month, so he'll probably need at least a couple rehab appearances before joining the Brewers bullpen. The righty delivered a 1.98 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 40:11 K:BB while notching 10 saves over 36.1 frames for Arizona before landing on the injured list July 7.

  • Brewers' Shelby Miller: Dealt to Milwaukee

The Brewers acquired Miller (forearm) and left-hander Jordan Montgomery (elbow) from the Diamondbacks on Thursday in exchange for a player to be named late, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Miller has been on the shelf since July 7 with a strained right forearm, but after turning in a 1.98 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 36.1 innings with Arizona, he'll most likely take on a high-leverage role in Milwaukee's bullpen once healthy. However, after notching 10 saves for Arizona prior to getting hurt, Miller is unlikely to be in line for many ninth-inning chances in Milwaukee while Trevor Megill has performed as one of the top closers in baseball this season. Miller recently resumed throwing bullpen sessions and should soon face hitters again before likely heading out on a brief minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated from the 15-day injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Throws bullpen

Miller (forearm) threw a 16-pitch bullpen session Friday, MLB.com reports. Miller was on a normal progression from the bullpen to live batting practice, but a live BP session July 22 was cut short due to lower-back tightness. There's no word on a next step for Miller, but Tuesday's minor setback likely means he won't be activated until early August.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Could face hitters again Friday

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that there's a good chance Miller (forearm/back) will face live hitters Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Miller threw 16 pitches to hitters Tuesday but cut the session short when his back tightened up on him. The back issue is considered minor, however, and Miller looks like he'll be back throwing after a couple days of rest. Miller initially went on the 15-day injured list in early July with a right forearm strain. A timetable for his return should become clearer if he gets through a throwing session Friday without any concerns.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Mixed results Tuesday

Miller (forearm) threw 16 pitches to live hitters Tuesday, but the session was cut short when his lower back tightened up, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Miller has been working his way back from a right forearm strain, throwing a bullpen session Saturday before facing live hitters Tuesday. The right-hander's arm felt good, but with the back issue popping up, the team opted to play it safe with Miller. The team will reportedly see how he's feeling Wednesday and go from there with his recovery plan.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Resumes throwing

Miller (forearm) began a throwing program Thursday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Miller sought a second opinion on his flexor tendon and UCL just before the All-Star break and apparently received good news. It's unclear how quickly he'll return, but this is still good progress in his recovery.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Seeking second opinion

Miller (forearm) will seek a second opinion after receiving MRI results, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. "They're gonna give him the information and then let him figure out what the next course of action is," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "The right flexor mass, flexor tendon and then the UCL, I think they're gonna do a whole workup and make sure that it's all stable and in a good spot." What comes next will either be Miller coming back or having surgery. He had evolved into the Diamondbacks' closer following elbow injuries to Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk. If Miller is set to miss significant time -- either with or without surgery -- Lovullo will have to scramble to find a closing option. With Jalen Beeks (back) placed on the injured list Friday, veterans Kevin Ginkel and Kendall Graveman and rookie Kyle Backhus have emerged as candidates.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Hits IL with forearm strain

Arizona placed Miller on the 15-day injured list Monday due to a right forearm strain. Miller fired a scoreless frame in Saturday's 7-1 win over the Royals but evidently suffered the injury at some point along the way. He'll be eligible to be reinstated shortly after the All-Star break, though he'll likely undergo further imaging on his forearm before the Diamondbacks offer up a clearer timetable for his return. Juan Morillo was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Jalen Beeks appears next in line for save chances, though Kevin Ginkel and Kyle Backhus could also factor into the mix while Arizona deals with several key injuries in the bullpen.
