  • Austin Riley 3B | ATL

Braves' Austin Riley: Tallies three hits in win

Riley went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and two runs scored in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Cubs.

Riley has logged four multi-hit efforts over his last eight games, going 12-for-30 (.400) in that span. The third baseman is up to a .282/.346/.519 slash line with 37 home runs, 96 RBI, 116 runs scored, 30 doubles, three triples and three stolen bases through 156 games this season. He continues to hit in the heart of the order in a near-everyday role.

  • Ke'Bryan Hayes 3B | CIN

Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Rest day Thursday

Hayes is not in the lineup for Thursday's game at Philadelphia.

This appears to be a routine day of rest for Hayes, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in the Pirates' loss to the Phillies on Wednesday. Jared Triolo will start at third base and bat third in Thursday's series finale.

  • Ryan McMahon 3B | NYY

Rockies' Ryan McMahon: Gets breather Thursday

McMahon is not in the lineup Thursday versus the Dodgers.

McMahon will grab some rest leading into the final weekend of the Rockies' season. Alan Trejo is starting at third base and batting seventh Thursday against Los Angeles.

  • Brian Anderson RF | ATL

Brewers' Brian Anderson: Designated for assignment

Anderson was designated for assignment by the Brewers on Thursday.

This move clears out a 40-man roster spot for Garrett Mitchell (shoulder) as he returns from the 60-day injured list. Anderson played regularly for the Brewers in the first half of the 2023 campaign, but he'd logged only 27 plate appearances since the beginning of August while slashing .192/.222/.308 with one walk and nine strikeouts.

  • Jace Peterson SS | ARI

Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Takes seat Thursday

Peterson is not in the lineup Thursday against the White Sox.

Emmanuel Rivera will start at third base and bat eighth for the visiting Diamondbacks. Peterson handled the hot corner in the first two games of Arizona's three-game series at Chicago and went 0-for-7 with a walk and a stolen base.

  • Nationals' Ildemaro Vargas: Avoids arbitration with Nationals

Vargas and the Nationals avoided arbitration Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year contract for 2024.

Vargas is making $975,000 this season and should get a little salary bump for 2024. The 32-year-old utility player has a career-high 280 plate appearances with the Nats in 2023, producing a .245/.299/.354 batting line with four home runs. Vargas does not have options left, so he figures to head into next season in a reserve role for the Nationals.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Provides insurance in 10th inning

Machado went 3-for-5 with two RBI in Wednesday's 5-2 extra-inning win over the Giants.

Machado's third hit of the game was a two-run single in the 10th inning to give the Padres some breathing room. He's gone 10-for-17 with seven RBI over his last four games, but he's also rested regularly while nursing an elbow injury in September. Machado has a .258/.320/.465 slash line with 30 home runs, 91 RBI, 75 runs scored and three stolen bases over 137 contests this year.

  • Josh Donaldson 3B | MIL

Brewers' Josh Donaldson: Takes seat Wednesday

Donaldson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.

Donaldson has a .743 OPS in 13 games since joining the Brewers and will head to the bench after the club earned the NL Central title Tuesday. Brian Anderson is starting at the hot corner and batting eighth.

  • Alec Bohm 3B | PHI

Phillies' Alec Bohm: On bench Wednesday

Bohm is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus Pittsburgh.

Bohm is one of many Phillies regulars riding the pine following Tuesday's victory over the Pirates, which locked up a spot in the playoffs. Rodolfo Castro will take over at the hot corner and bat eighth.

  • Diamondbacks' Emmanuel Rivera: Absent from lineup

Rivera is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the White Sox.

Rivera has been part of a rotation at third base for the Diamondbacks but will begin this one on the bench for the fourth time in five contests. Jace Peterson is handling the hot corner.
