Ryan Weathers SP | NYY
Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Begins playing catch
Weathers (finger) has been cleared to play catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
It's the first time he's done any throwing since going down with a left index finger strain back in early June. Given that he was shut down for more than six weeks, it's going to take a long time for Weathers to get ramped back up, but this was the first step. He's pitched well this season for the Marlins when healthy, posting a 3.55 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB through 71 innings.

Braxton Garrett RP | CHC
Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Resumes throwing program
Garrett (forearm) has began playing catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Garrett will finally resume a throwing program after being placed on the injured list June 23 with a strained left forearm. The 26-year-old was deemed asymptomatic last week but spent several days focusing on strengthening his forearm before starting to throw. Garrett still has several checkpoints to complete before being activated and shouldn't be expected back for several weeks.

Sandy Alcantara SP | MIA
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Throwing bullpen session Wednesday
Alcantara (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Alcantara began a throwing program back in March, but this will be his first time throwing off a mound since his October 2023 Tommy John surgery. He won't be back this season, but the Marlins anticipate the former Cy Young winner to be ready to roll heading into 2025.

David Peralta LF | SD
Padres' David Peralta: Idle against lefty
Peralta is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Nationals.
With southpaw DJ Herz on the mound for Washington, the lefty-hitting Peralta will head to the bench. Jurickson Profar, Jackson Merrill and Bryce Johnson fill the outfield from left to right.
-
Alek Thomas CF | LAD
Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas: On bench Tuesday
Thomas is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Royals.
After drawing the start against a left-handed pitcher Monday, Thomas will get the night off Tuesday. Jake McCarthy will bat eighth and fill center field.

Jordan Montgomery RP | TEX
Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Back from IL, starting Tuesday
The Diamondbacks reinstated Montgomery (knee) from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday against the Royals, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
The veteran left-hander has been on the shelf nearly a month due to right knee inflammation and is returning to Arizona's rotation without a minor-league rehab assignment. Montgomery threw 56 pitches in a simulated game Thursday and will likely face some minor workload limitations in his first couple starts back with the Diamondbacks.

Whit Merrifield 2B | ATL
Braves' Whit Merrifield: Sitting Tuesday
Merrifield (finger) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Reds.
Merrifield was struck in the finger by a groundball while taking part in defensive drills before Monday's game, and although he was cleared of a fracture, his Atlanta debut will be pushed back. It's unclear if Merrifield will be available off the bench Tuesday.

Humberto Castellanos RP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Optioned to Triple-A
The Diamondbacks optioned Castellanos to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.
Castellanos threw 40 pitches over three innings in a relief appearance in Monday's loss to the Royals, so he wasn't going to be available to pitch for at least a day or two. He's clearing out to make room on the roster for Jordan Montgomery, who returns from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday in Kansas City.

Sean Murphy C | ATL
Braves' Sean Murphy: Idle Tuesday
Murphy is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Reds.
Murphy is hitless in his last 13 at-bats but has more walks (three) than strikeouts (two) during that stretch. Travis d'Arnaud will catch and bat cleanup Tuesday.

Jared Jones SP | PIT
Pirates' Jared Jones: Tuesday's session on flat ground
Jones' (lat) throwing session Tuesday was from flat ground, not from the mound as previously indicated, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Destin had reported earlier that Jones was throwing a bullpen session, but he later issued a correction, noting it was a flat-ground throwing session from the Pirates' bullpen. While it means the right-hander isn't quite as far along as previously indicated, it's still good news that he is doing any kind of throwing for the second day in a row. Jones has been sidelined for most of July with a Grade 2 right lat strain.
