  • Kyle Stowers 1B | MIA

Marlins' Kyle Stowers: Taking seat against southpaw

Stowers is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com reports.

Stowers started against lefty Eduardo Rodriguez in Tuesday's 3-1 loss, but he'll head to the bench Wednesday while the Diamondbacks send a second straight southpaw (Jordan Montgomery) to the bump. Derek Hill will fill in in left field for Stowers, who has struggled to a .133/.200/.133 line through his first 18 games with the Marlins following his acquisition from the Orioles at the trade deadline.

  • Nick Fortes C | TB

Marlins' Nick Fortes: Getting day off

Fortes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com reports.

Flores had started each of the Marlins' last four games behind the plate, so he'll be getting a breather for the series finale. Ali Sanchez will step in at catcher in place of Flores, who has been swinging a hot bat lately with a .998 OPS over his last 11 games.

  • Victor Vodnik RP | MIA

Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Goes on IL with bicep issue

The Rockies placed Vodnik on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right bicep inflammation.

Dating back to the start of July, Vodnik had posted a 3.74 ERA while going 9-for-10 in save chances over 20 appearances to solidify himself as the Rockies' closer, but his shoulder injury now creates an opening at the back end of the bullpen. Tyler Kinley previously converted a save Aug. 1 and would appear to be first in line to step in at closer as a replacement for Vodnik. A clear timeline for Vodnik's return hasn't been established, but the fact that he has been diagnosed with bicep inflammation rather than a strain could make him a candidate to return from the IL once his 15 days are up.

  • Camilo Doval RP | SF

Giants' Camilo Doval: Expected back on road trip

Giants manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that he expects Doval to be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento sometime during the team's Aug. 23-29 road trip, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

What role Doval would fill has not yet been determined, as Ryan Walker has been excellent since taking over the closer role. Since being demoted to Sacramento, Doval has allowed two runs with a 5:1 K:BB over four innings of work. Just one free pass is encouraging to see, as Doval's 13.3 percent walk rate was a major reason why the Giants opted to send him down. When the former closer does rejoin the big-league bullpen, he could work in low-leverage spots initially.

  • Jake Cave LF | COL

Rockies' Jake Cave: Sitting again Wednesday

Cave is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

The lefty-hitting Cave is on the bench for the third straight game, with the latter two absences coming against left-handed pitching. Even though Kris Bryant (back) recently returned to the injured list to open up a regular spot in right field, Cave may not be on track to handle a strong-side platoon role as the Rockies give a longer look to rookie Jordan Beck. Cave has been serviceable against right-handed pitching this season (96 wRC+, .324 wOBA), but he's a 31-year-old on an expiring contract who is unlikely to be prioritized by the non-contending Rockies down the stretch.

  • Jordan Beck RF | COL

Rockies' Jordan Beck: Emerging as lineup regular

Beck will start in right field and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

Beck will garner his seventh consecutive start Wednesday, with four coming against left-handed pitching and three coming versus righties. Though the left-handed-hitting Nolan Jones (back) returned from the injured list Sunday and should take back a strong-side platoon role in the corner outfield, Beck looks as though he could be prioritized over Sam Hilliard and Jake Cave at the other corner spot while Charlie Blackmon sees more time at designated hitter sans Kris Bryant (back). Beck has gone 6-for-19 with a 4:7 BB:K over his last six starts.

  • Kevin Newman 3B | LAA

Diamondbacks' Kevin Newman: Heading to bench Wednesday

Newman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins.

Newman will hit the bench for the series finale after he had occupied the keystone for each of the Diamondbacks' last four contests while going 3-for-15 at the plate. With Ketel Marte (ankle) on the shelf, the Diamondbacks will have a regular spot at second base open for the foreseeable future, but it's unclear if manager Torey Lovullo has settled on Newman as the primary option. The Diamondbacks signed Luis Guillorme on Tuesday, and he'll check into the lineup at second base a day later for what will be his team debut. Guillorme bats from the left side, so the Diamondbacks could have him fill the strong side of a platoon with the right-handed-hitting Newman.

  • Drew Romo C | CHW

Rockies' Drew Romo: Getting another start Wednesday

Romo will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's contest versus the Nationals.

Romo didn't start the Rockies' first game after being called up last Friday, but he's now been in the lineup for three of four contests since then and tallied his first major-league hit in Tuesday's game. Jacob Stallings still seems likely to play plenty behind the plate as well with Elias Diaz gone from the team.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Absent from lineup

Gurriel is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in Miami.

Gurriel reached base four times and slugged home runs in the first two games of the series but will begin Wednesday's finale on the bench. The Diamondbacks will roll with Pavin Smith in left field.

  • Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto: Set for second sim game Wednesday

Yamamoto (triceps) will throw a two-inning simulated game Wednesday, per MLB.com.

This will be Yamamoto's second sim game since he landed on the injured list in mid-June. In his first, the Japanese hurler threw 17 pitches in St. Louis on Aug. 16. Yamamoto is expected to follow Wednesday's simulated game with a three-inning sim game before heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment. He could return to the Dodgers' rotation in early September.
