  • Padres' Martin Maldonado: Sitting again Monday

Maldonado is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Mets on Monday.

Maldonado will be on the bench for a second straight game while Elias Diaz serves behind home plate and bats ninth. Maldonado hasn't been that productive at the plate this season, though he has gone 5-for-14 (.357) with three doubles and two RBI since the All-Star break.

  • Nationals' Travis Sykora: Slated for UCL surgery

Sykora will undergo a UCL reconstruction on his right elbow in two weeks, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Sykora landed on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Harrisburg earlier this month with what had been referred to as triceps soreness, but subsequent testing revealed the need for a UCL repair. It's a huge blow to the Nationals and one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, as Sykora could be sidelined until 2027. The 21-year-old holds a 1.91 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 74:17 K:BB through 42.1 innings in the minors this season.

  • James Wood RF | WAS

Nationals' James Wood: Day off amid slump

Wood is out of the lineup for Monday's contest in Houston.

Wood struck out in four of five plate appearances in Sunday's win over the Twins and has gone 4-for-46 with 26 strikeouts over his last 12 games. Daylen Lile will shift over to left field and Alex Call will receive a start in right field Monday while Wood gets a day off to regroup.

  • Max Muncy 3B | LAD

Dodgers' Max Muncy: Beginning rehab assignment Tuesday

Manager Dave Roberts said Monday that Muncy (knee) will begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Muncy landed on the 10-day injured list in early July due to a bone bruise in his left knee. He has recovered more quickly than expected, and he could return to the big club in early August if his rehab assignment goes smoothly. Muncy posted an .832 OPS with four steals, 13 home runs and 55 RBI across 315 plate appearances prior to his injury.

  • Pedro Pages C | STL

Cardinals' Pedro Pages: Taking seat Monday

Pages is out of the lineup for Monday's contest versus the Marlins.

Pages' average on the season has dipped below .200 following a 1-for-21 stretch at the plate, so he will get a day off to regroup. Yohel Pozo will start at catcher and bat seventh for the Cardinals.

  • Nolan Arenado 3B | ARI

Cardinals' Nolan Arenado: Taking seat Monday

Arenado is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins.

Arenado has gone 1-for-13 at the plate during the first four games of the Cardinals' homestand and appears to be getting a routine day off Monday. Thomas Saggese will cover third base and bat eighth for the Cardinals.

  • Ivan Herrera DH | STL

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Making first start in outfield

Herrera will start in left field and bat second in Monday's game against the Marlins.

Herrera has been taking pregame outfield reps in recent weeks, but he'll be making his first-ever professional start in the outfield Monday. All 11 of his previous starts this month since he returned from a hamstring injury had come at designated hitter.

  • Matt Svanson RP | STL

Cardinals' Matt Svanson: Rejoins big-league bullpen

The Cardinals recalled Svanson from Triple-A Memphis on Monday.

Svanson has pitched well during his previous stints in the Cardinals bullpen this season, collecting a 3.12 ERA and 24:8 K:BB over 26 frames. He will provide manager Oliver Marmol with a fresh relief arm in the middle innings.

  • Andre Granillo RP | WAS

Cardinals' Andre Granillo: Sent back to Triple-A

The Cardinals optioned Granillo to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.

Granillo was going to be unavailable for a bit after pitching both of the previous two days, which included a 46-pitch relief appearance Sunday versus the Padres. He's been replaced on the 26-man active roster and in the bullpen by Matt Svanson, who was called up from Triple-A.

  • Freddy Tarnok RP | MIA

Marlins' Freddy Tarnok: Sent back to Triple-A

The Marlins optioned Tarnok to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday.

Tarnok was with the big club over the weekend while Luke Bachar was on paternity leave, but Bachar has now returned to the Marlins to reclaim his spot in the bullpen. The right-handed Tarnok didn't make an appearance during his brief stint in the majors.
