Song's promotion comes as a corresponding move to the Padres placing Jake Cronenworth on the seven-day concussion injured list Tuesday. Since being optioned to Triple-A El Paso on April 27, Song has slashed .292/.346/.458 with a home run, three RBI and a stolen base across 26 plate appearances in five games.

Song landed on the injured list at the start of the regular season due to a right oblique strain but has been playing rehab games with El Paso since March 27. Song remains on the mend from the right oblique strain that he aggravated in March. He'll open the season on the IL and can make his MLB debut as soon as April 1, but MLB.com relays that he's trending toward a mid-April return. Song was able to play in a minor-league game on the back fields of camp this past Sunday, so he could be ready to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A El Paso when the season gets underway this weekend.

Song was removed from Thursday's Cactus League game against the Mariners with right oblique tightness, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Manager Craig Stammen said after Thursday's contest that Song's removal was precautionary, as the Padres didn't want to risk further damage to the 29-year-old's oblique, which he originally injured in January. Song may take a break from Cactus League action for a couple days, but his Opening Day availability doesn't currently seem to be at risk.
