  • James McCann C | ARI

Diamondbacks' James McCann: Back on bench Sunday

McCann is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.

McCann will be on the bench for the third time in four games while the Diamondbacks continue to use a three-man committee at catcher that also includes Jose Herrera and Adrian Del Castillo. Herrera will get the nod behind the dish Sunday, catching for starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez.

  • Padres' Nestor Cortes: Comes off injured list

The Padres reinstated Cortes (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Sunday.

Shortly after being acquired from the Brewers at the trade deadline, Cortes will join the Padres' 26-man active roster after missing about four months due to a flexor strain. The left-hander threw 93 pitches over 5.2 innings during his final rehab outing at Triple-A Nashville on July 24, so he should be able to handle a full starter's workload whenever he makes his Padres debut. The open spot in San Diego's rotation lines up for next weekend versus Boston, but the Padres could have Cortes take the mound during the three-game series in Arizona that begins Monday.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Loses starting spot, hits Triple-A

The Padres optioned Vasquez to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

The 26-year-old righty took the loss Saturday against St. Louis after giving up five runs over four innings, and he'll now be the odd man out of the rotation with San Diego activating trade-deadline pickup Nestor Cortes (elbow) from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. Vasquez has been a decent back-end arm for San Diego this season with a 3.93 ERA, though his 1.39 WHIP and 55:48 K:BB over 107.2 innings have resulted in limited fantasy utility. He seems likely to be back with the Padres before the end of the season, whether it be as a starter or reliever.

  • Rockies' Braxton Fulford: Summoned from Triple-A

The Rockies recalled Fulford from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.

Fulford will be up with the Rockies for the fourth time this season after slashing .250/.262/.425 with one home run, one stolen base, 11 RBI and four runs over 42 plate appearances across his previous three stints in the big leagues. With Hunter Goodman and Austin Nola both healthy, Fulford will serve as the Rockies' No. 3 catcher and will likely be in line for limited playing time.

  • Blaine Crim 1B | TEX

Rockies' Blaine Crim: Lands in Colorado

The Rockies claimed Crim off waivers and optioned him to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Crim went 1-for-11 with one walk and six strikeouts during a brief stint in the big leagues with the Rangers back in May, but he had been raking at Triple-A Round Rock before Texas designated him for assignment Thursday. Over 378 plate appearances with Round Rock, Crim slashed .284/.373/.515 with 18 home runs and three stolen bases. Crim will stick around in the Pacific Coast League and link up with the Rockies' affiliate in Albuquerque, but he could receive another look in the majors before the end of the season if Colorado has a need for a short-side platoon first baseman or designated hitter.

  • Brenton Doyle CF | COL

Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Receiving afternoon off

Doyle is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.

Yanquiel Fernandez will join Mickey Moniak and Jordan Beck in the Rockies outfield while Doyle receives a breather for Sunday's matinee. After missing four straight games due to a sore right shoulder, Doyle returned to the lineup to start each of the past four contests, going 6-for-15 with a home run, a double, a walk, four runs and three RBI.

  • Jared Triolo SS | PIT

Pirates' Jared Triolo: Making third straight start

Triolo will start at third base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Since the Pirates traded Ke'Bryan Hayes to the Reds on Wednesday, Triolo appears to have temporarily settled in as the preferred option at third base. He'll pick up a third straight start after going 1-for-7 with two walks, two runs and one RBI through the first two games of the series in Colorado.

  • Pirates' Isiah Kiner-Falefa: On bench for series finale

Kiner-Falefa is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Liover Peguero will move over to shortstop Sunday after a massive three-homer game as the first baseman Saturday, leaving no room in the lineup for Kiner-Falefa. Even if Peguero is handed an everyday role at shortstop over the final two months of the season, Kiner-Falefa could retain playing time by shifting over to third base, where Pittsburgh has an opening after trading Ke'Bryan Hayes to Cincinnati.

  • Pirates' Andrew McCutchen: Resting Sunday

McCutchen is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.

McCutchen will get a breather after starting the last five games and going 5-for-24 with two home runs, two walks, seven RBI and four runs. Bryan Reynolds will serve as the designated hitter in McCutchen's stead.

  • Matt Shaw RF | CHC

Cubs' Matt Shaw: Getting Sunday off

Shaw is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles.

Shaw had started at third base in seven straight games, but he'll cede the hot corner to Willi Castro on Sunday. Since the All-Star break, Shaw has produced a 1.014 OPS, but he'll need to maintain that improved level of production to stave off Castro for a regular spot in the lineup.
