  • Masyn Winn SS | STL

Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Set for knee procedure

Winn is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery within the next two weeks to address a torn meniscus in his right knee, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Before Winn was placed on the injured list Saturday, manager Oliver Marmol confirmed that the slick-fielding shortstop won't take the field again in 2025 since he hadn't bounced back as well as the Cardinals had hoped while playing through the knee injury over the last several weeks. The surgery should help provide more permanent relief for the 23-year-old, who previously had a similar procedure on the same knee in high school, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Winn noted that after the previous surgery, he had resumed playing within three months, and the expectation is that he'll be available as a full participant for the start of spring training in February. Thomas Saggese has started each of the Cardinals' last five games at shortstop and is likely to serve as the primary option at the position for the remainder of the season.

  • Padres' Xander Bogaerts: Gearing up for return in final week

Manager Mike Shildt said that Bogaerts (foot) took ground balls, tracked live pitches and took swings in the batting cage during a workout Saturday and could continue his rehab program at the Padres' facility in Arizona during the upcoming week, MLB.com reports.

The Padres placed Bogaerts on the 10-day injured list Aug. 29 due to a non-displaced fracture in his left foot, but the veteran infielder is progressing well in his recovery and is targeting a return to the lineup during the final week of the regular season. While Bogaerts has been shelved, the Padres have prioritized offense over defense of late, as Jake Cronenworth and Luis Arraez (head) have been seeing more starts at shortstop and second base, respectively, in order to open up a regular spot in the lineup at designated hitter for Gavin Sheets.

  • Chase Meidroth SS | CHW

White Sox's Chase Meidroth: Pops fifth homer

Meidroth went 1-for-3 with a solo home run against the Guardians on Sunday.

Meidroth delivered his fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2. It was also his second long ball in 26 games since returning from the injured list, and he's maintained a .330 average with eight RBI, 13 runs scored and two stolen bases in that span.

  • Ezequiel Tovar SS | COL

Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Ends skid at plate

Tovar went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored Sunday against the Padres.

Tovar entered Sunday's game hitless in his last six starts -- all of which came on the road -- while also striking out 12 times across 19 at-bats in that span. He ended that stretch with a single in the sixth inning and then delivered an RBI double one frame later. Tovar is still hitting .250 since Sept. 1 and now has three RBI and five runs scored with a stolen base in that 13-game span.

  • Anthony Volpe SS | NYY

Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Out for fifth straight game

Volpe (shoulder) remains out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.

Volpe will stick on the bench for a fifth straight game while he continues to recover from the cortisone shot he received Wednesday to aid the healing of his partially torn left labrum. Even if the injection yields the desired effect and Volpe is deemed ready to play during the upcoming week, it's unclear if he would take back an everyday role at shortstop. Volpe's job security had been slipping prior to his recent shutdown; he's posted a poor .188/.244/.412 slash line since the All-Star break and has also endured some hiccups on the defensive end.

  • Bobby Witt SS | KC

Royals' Bobby Witt: Triple, home run in win

Witt went 2-for-5 with a triple, a solo home run and a second run scored in Sunday's 10-3 win over the Phillies.

Witt led off the Royals' four-run sixth inning with his sixth triple of the season before extending the lead to 9-3 with an opposite-field shot off Max Lazar, his 22nd homer this year. Witt had gone six games without an extra-base hit prior to Sunday, going just 4-for-22 (.182) in that span. Overall, he's slashing .292/.350/.501 with 79 RBI, 94 runs scored and 36 steals through 631 plate appearances this season.

  • Ryan Ritter SS | COL

Rockies' Ryan Ritter: Back in action Sunday

Ritter (undisclosed) will start at second base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Padres.

Ritter was held out of the lineup for each of the previous five games due to an unspecified issue, though he was able to make an appearance off the bench in Saturday's 11-3 loss. He reached base in his lone plate appearance when he was hit by a pitch, but he was able to stay in the game and is now ready to reclaim a starting role in the series finale.

  • Zachary Neto SS | LAA

Angels' Zach Neto: Remaining on bench Sunday

Neto (hand) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Neto sustained a hand injury while taking a swing Thursday and will sit Sunday for the third consecutive game. The Angels have a team day off Monday, so the shortstop will have an extra day to recover before Tuesday's series opener in Milwaukee. Denzer Guzman will pick up another start at shortstop for the Halos.

  • Joseph Ortiz SS | MIL

Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Not in Sunday's lineup

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Cardinals.

Ortiz started the past 11 games after coming off the injured list to begin September, but he'll hit the bench Sunday after posting a .206/.229/.206 slash line during that span. Andruw Monasterio will take over at shortstop after delivering a walk-off single Saturday.

  • Luke Williams SS | ATL

Braves' Luke Williams: Back in majors

Atlanta selected Williams' contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.

The utility man was outrighted to Gwinnett last weekend after being designated for assignment by Atlanta, but he's back in the big leagues with Jake Fraley (oblique) landing on the injured list. Williams has gone 4-for-30 with five stolen bases in 44 MLB games this season and is unlikely to see much playing time while up with the big club.
