  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Kicking off rehab Tuesday

Pena (calf) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Pena is less than a week removed from landing on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain, but he's ready to test things out in a game setting. The expectation is that Pena will play a couple rehab contests before being activated from the IL on Friday when he's first eligible.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Headed to injured list

Astros manager Joe Espada said after Monday's 5-4 loss to the Twins that Pena has been diagnosed with a mild left calf strain and will be placed on the 10-day injured list, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Pena was held out of the starting lineup Monday after experiencing left leg discomfort, and Espada revealed after the game that further testing revealed a calf strain. Espada noted that he's hopeful Pena will be in line for a minimum-length stint on the shelf, which would put the shortstop in line to return July 10 against the Rangers. Look for Nick Allen and Brice Matthews to see most of the reps at shortstop in Pena's absence.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Out of lineup with leg soreness

Astros manager Joe Espada said that Pena is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Twins due to left leg discomfort, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Pena has missed time this season with right hamstring issues, but it's his other leg that's bothering him this time. He's being evaluated by team doctors, and more could be known about his condition later Monday. Nick Allen (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list Monday and will start at shortstop and bat eighth as a replacement in the lineup for Pena.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Cramping in right hamstring

The Astros announced that Pena left Monday's game with a right hamstring cramp. Pena was removed from Monday's game in the sixth inning with what is now diagnosed as a right hamstring cramp. Houston's infield, specifically their depth at shortstop, has been brutalized by injuries this season with Carlos Correa (ankle), Braden Shewmake (thigh) and Nick Allen (hamstring) all on the injured list.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Leaves game early Monday

The Astros removed Pena from the game after fouling off a pitch mid-at-bat, reports Julia Morales of Space City Home Network. Brice Matthews replaced Pena at shortstop in the sixth inning after fouling off a pitch in the middle of his at-bat. • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Homers twice in rout

Pena went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in Friday's 9-3 win over the Guardians. Pena was a thorn in the Guardians' side all game, homering in the third and seventh innings before adding an RBI single in the eighth. The shortstop has now recorded multiple hits in three straight games, piling up four extra-base hits and six RBI during that stretch. For the year, he's slashing .289/.351/.461 with six home runs, 18 RBI, 28 runs scored and five steals across 168 plate appearances.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Homers, swipes base in rout

Pena went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, two additional runs scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 9-2 win over the Brewers. Pena showcased both power and speed Saturday, homering and swiping a bag in the same game for the first time this year. The shortstop missed over a month of action with a right hamstring strain earlier this season and was without a homer in his first 17 games, but he's found his power stroke lately, having gone deep in three of his past five contests. Working as Houston's primary leadoff batter, Pena is hitting .273 with seven extra-base hits, eight RBI, three steals and 15 runs scored over 88 at-bats.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Homers again Thursday

Pena went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 5-1 win over the Rangers. Pena led off the contest with a 424-foot blast off Nathan Eovaldi, setting the tone for Houston in the victory. After going 17 games without a homer to start the year, a stretch interrupted by a five-week stay on the IL due to a hamstring strain, Pena now has two in his last three games. He's batting .256 with a .689 OPS, 12 runs scored, six RBI and two steals through 90 plate appearances this season.

The Astros reinstated Pena (hamstring/neck) from the 10-day injured list Monday, and he'll start at shortstop and bat leadoff in Houston's series opener in Minnesota. Pena will be back in action for the Astros for the first time since April 11, after a Grade 1 right hamstring strain and more recently, a stiff neck, had kept him on the shelf for just over five weeks. Prior to hitting the shelf, Pena hit .256 with four extra-base hits (all doubles), one stolen base, five runs and no RBI through his first 10 games with Houston to begin the season.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Rehab assignment on tap

Pena (hamstring) is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Tuesday or Wednesday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. The 28-year-old shortstop ran the bases with no issues this weekend, which was the final hurdle in his rehab program before playing in games. Pena shouldn't require a lengthy rehab assignment and could be back with the Astros next weekend or early the following week.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: On cusp of rehab stint

Manager Joe Espada said Friday that Pena (hamstring) will "hopefully" run the bases this weekend, which would be the final step in his rehab program before starting a rehab assignment, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. The shortstop has been on the shelf nearly four weeks due to a strained hamstring, but he's close to being cleared for game action. Pena shouldn't require a lengthy rehab assignment before rejoining Houston's active roster, so a return in mid-May remains on the table.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Taking live batting practice

Pena (hamstring) began taking at-bats in live batting practice Tuesday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Manager Joe Espada added that the 28-year-old infielder is close to beginning a rehab assignment in the minor leagues, though he remains without a firm return timeline.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Lands on IL with strained hamstring

The Astros placed Pena on the 10-day injured list Monday with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The Astros had previously referred to Pena's injury as right posterior knee tightness, but evidently the issue is concentrated more in his hamstring. A Grade 1 strain is the least severe and could allow Pena to return around the time he's first eligible, though the Astros will be careful since hamstring strains are prone to reaggravation. The Astros figure to roll with Carlos Correa at shortstop and Isaac Paredes at third base most days while Pena is out, but it will be Nick Allen handling shortstop Monday in Seattle.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Held out of Sunday's lineup

Pena (knee) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The 28-year-old shortstop departed Saturday's 8-7 loss due to right posterior knee tightness. According to Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle, manager Joe Espada said Sunday that he didn't have an update available for Pena, who should be considered day-to-day as he continues to be evaluated. Nick Allen will step in at shortstop Sunday for the Astros.

Pena was pulled from Saturday's contest against Seattle due to right posterior knee tightness, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Pena got two plate appearances in the contest, going 1-for-3. Following his single in the fourth inning, he advanced to second on a flyout and to third on an Isaac Paredes single. Following the Paredes hit, Pena exited and was replaced by pinch runner Nick Allen, who subsequently took over at shortstop. The severity of the injury isn't clear, and Pena should be considered day-to-day for the time being.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Another day off Wednesday

Pena is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Pena continues to play every other day as the Astros ease him back into action following a recovery from a fractured finger. He should be ready to resume playing on an everyday basis soon, but it's unclear when exactly it will happen. Carlos Correa will start at shortstop and Isaac Paredes will cover third base Wednesday as the Astros go for the series sweep.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Not starting Saturday

Pena is not in the Astros' starting lineup against the Angels on Saturday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Pena will take a seat after going 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Angels. Carlos Correa will shift over to shortstop while Isaac Paredes gets the start at third base Saturday. Pena appears fully recovered from the fractured fingertip he sustained in early March, but the Astros may continue to monitor his workload in the early going after he missed most of spring training.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Swipes bag in 2026 debut

Pena went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Angels. After being held out Opening Day, Pena made his season debut hitting leadoff and set the table very effectively. The shortstop missed most of spring training and a chance to play for the Dominican Republic during the WBC, as a result of a fractured fingertip he sustained in early March, but Pena recovered in time to avoid a stint on the IL and appears to be fully healthy.
