Brendan Ryan was designated for assignment in anticipation of Pennington's return. Pennington is hitting just .217/.294/.370 this season, and with Gregorio Petit faring well of late, the 31-year-old may be relegated to a utility role upon activation.

Wendle went 1-for-4 with a walk in Triple-A Nashville's 3-2 loss to Sacramento on Sunday.

Wendle has been mired in a slump for most of the season and he's now 3-for-23 (.130) over his last six games. The 26-year-old has proven that he's not a sub-Mendoza line hitter, however, as last season with Nashville, he batted .289 over 618 plate appearances. Given his history of success in the minors (career .283 BA) Oakland could call him up at some point in 2016 but he'll have to show that he can produce better than the .204 average he currently has in 2016.

Sardinas was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.

Sardinas received a promotion while the Mariners sent Chris Taylor down to Triple-A. The 23-year-old was ineffective in his first stint with the Mariners, hitting just .154/.185/.269 in 12 games to start the season. However, he has been scorching hot in Triple-A thus far, hitting .406/.457/.438 with four RBI and two stolen bases and will look to build on that success in Seattle.
