  • Steven Matz RP | TB

Mets' Steven Matz: Lifted after just four innings

Matz (1-1) gave up three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out six over four innings in Wednesday's win over the Nationals. He did not factor into the decision.

Matz had thrown just 74 pitches and had retired 10 in a row after giving up a three-run homer in the first inning, so the quick hook was a bit of a surprise. The 26-year-old hasn't provided much length in any of his starts, failing to go beyond 5.1 innings in any outing. He still sports an impressive 10.7 K/9, so if he's able to consistently get deeper into games, Matz could be worth a look. He'll take his next turn in the rotation Tuesday against the Cardinals.

  • Rich Hill SP | KC

Dodgers' Rich Hill: Dealing with cracked nail

Hill (finger) said he's dealing with a cracked nail on his middle finger, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Hill suffered the injury while throwing his fastball during his previous start. The veteran right-hander didn't seem too worried about the issue, however, noting that his placement on the disabled list was simply "precautionary," and that he expects to only miss one turn in the rotation while sidelined. Since his placement on the disabled list is backdated to Sunday, Hill will be eligible to rejoin the Dodgers on April 25, which seems possible at this point barring any setbacks.

Dodgers' Rich Hill: Lands on disabled list

Hill was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with left third digit inflammation.

It's unclear when Hill picked up the injury, which the Dodgers are currently calling left middle finger inflammation, but it could help explain his poor outing against the Diamondbacks over the weekend that saw him concede seven runs through just five innings. The veteran right-hander has dealt with blister issues in each of the previous two seasons, though it's not yet known if his current ailment is related. Hill remains without a timetable for his return at the moment, but he'll be eligible to return from the disabled list April 25 if he proves ready. It's possible he only misses one turn in the rotation.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Diamondbacks' Taijuan Walker: Will require Tommy John surgery

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Walker (elbow) was diagnosed with a torn UCL and will likely undergo Tommy John surgery.

Walker exited his previous start April 14 with forearm tightness and was subsequently placed on the 10-day disabled list. He was later diagnosed with a UCL injury, and a second opinion ultimately confirmed the right-hander is dealing with a tear that will require surgical intervention. This is a brutal blow for both Walker and the Diamondbacks, as the 25-year-old owned a solid 3.45 ERA through three starts for the first-place club prior to suffering the season-ending injury. For now, Matt Koch is slated to start in Walker's place Friday, but Shelby Miller (elbow), who is recovering from a Tommy John procedure of his own, could end up settling in as the long-term rotation replacement by late June or early July.

  • Zach Davies SP | WAS

Brewers' Zach Davies: Shuts down Reds in Wednesday's win

Davies (1-2) picked up the win over the Reds on Wednesday, firing 6.1 scoreless innings and scattering three hits and two walks while striking out two.

The Brewers' defense committed three errors behind him, but the right-hander was able to escape every jam it created before turning things over to Dan Jennings and Jacob Barnes to complete the shutout. Davies has had a roller-coaster start to the season, recording two quality starts and two ugly ones in four outings, but he'll try to break that pattern Tuesday in Kansas City.

  • Tyler Mahle SP | ATL

Reds' Tyler Mahle: Fans six in Wednesday's loss

Mahle (1-3) took the loss against the Brewers on Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings while striking out six.

The right-hander served up a two-run homer to Eric Thames in the third inning, and those proved to be the only runs in the game. Mahle's command wasn't quite there Wednesday, as his four walks were more than he had in his first three starts of the season combined, but he has a strong 8.6 K/9 through 21 innings. The rookie will take a 5.14 ERA into his next outing Tuesday at home against the Braves.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Battered by Bucs on Wednesday

Freeland (0-3) took the loss against the Pirates on Wednesday, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks over four-plus innings while striking out two.

The left-hander's now failed to escape the fifth inning in each of his last two starts. While Freeland's 17:9 K:BB in 20 innings isn't terrible, it's accompanied by a 5.85 ERA and elevated 2.3 HR/9, and that's with only one of his four outings so far this season coming at Coors Field. He'll head back home to take on the Padres at altitude Tuesday.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Brewers' Wade Miley: Set to increase to 60 pitches

Miley (groin) will throw 60 or more pitches in his next rehab start, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

The Brewers were pleased with Miley's first rehab appearance Tuesday. He's set to increase his pitch count in his next one and could then be ready to return to the big leagues. With ERAs of 5.37 and 5.61 in the past two seasons, though, he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset even if he works his way into the rotation in Milwaukee.

  • Miles Mikolas RP | WAS

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Start bumped back to Sunday

Mikolas' next start will come Sunday against the Reds, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.

The Cardinals have had two postponements in three days, causing a shuffling of their rotation. Mikolas was set to pitch Saturday but has been jumped in the order by Carlos Martinez. He'll now pitch on a full seven days' rest, having last pitched Saturday against the Reds.

  • Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Start bumped up to Saturday

Martinez's next start will come Saturday against the Reds, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.

The Cardinals have had two games postponed in a span of three days, causing some shuffling of their rotation. Martinez will jump ahead of Miles Mikolas in the rotation, as Mikolas will now slide back to Sunday. If St. Louis wanted to keep Martinez on four days' rest, it could bump him ahead of Michael Wacha as well and throw him Friday, but the Cards seem to have settled on giving him one extra day and throwing him Saturday instead.
