  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Hit hard in fourth loss

Freeland (1-4) took the loss Saturday against the Phillies, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and no walks in five innings. He struck out four. The 32-year-old southpaw poured in 64 of his 97 pitches for strikes, but he was perhaps a bit too haphazard in targeting the zone Saturday. It was the 13th time in his career that he was hit around for double-digit knocks, and Freeland has now given up at least four runs in three consecutive starts after yielding four altogether over his first three outings of 2026. He'll take a poor 6.00 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB across 30 innings into his next scheduled appearance versus Arizona.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Allows six runs in third loss

Freeland (1-3) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against Atlanta. He struck out seven. Freeland generated a game-high 17 whiffs and struck out a season-best seven batters, but the contact he allowed was damaging as Atlanta tagged the southpaw for six earned runs and belted two homers. The 32-year-old opened the season by allowing four runs across 15.2 innings over his first three starts, but in his past two outings since being reinstated from the injured list with left shoulder inflammation, he has allowed 10 earned runs across 9.1 frames. Overall, Freeland owns a 5.04 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with a 24:8 K:BB across 25 innings in 2026 and will look to get back on track in his next start, tentatively scheduled for Saturday against Philadelphia.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Stuck with loss in return

Freeland (1-2) took the loss Tuesday as the Rockies were downed 7-2 by the Reds, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. Making his return from a three-week absence due to shoulder trouble, Freeland got ambushed for three runs in the first inning before settling down, including a two-run shot by Spencer Steer. The veteran southpaw sports a still-respectable 3.48 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB through 20.2 innings, and he'll look to rebound in his next start, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against Atlanta.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Starting Tuesday in Cincinnati

The Rockies activated Freeland (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday. Freeland will start Tuesday's game in Cincinnati after missing the last three weeks of action with left shoulder inflammation. The southpaw didn't make any rehab starts prior to being activated, so Freeland could be relatively limited from a workload perspective in Tuesday's outing.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: On cusp of activation

Freeland (shoulder) threw a bullpen session with no issues Sunday and is expected to be reinstated from the injured list during the three-game series against the Reds that begins Tuesday, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports. The Rockies have yet to announce their starting pitcher for Tuesday's series opener, and Freeland is likely being considered to take the mound, though he could also start later in the series. The veteran left-hander landed on the shelf with shoulder inflammation after allowing one run over 6.1 innings versus Houston on April 7. Freeland could face some minor workload restrictions in his first start back since he didn't embark on a rehab assignment, but the brevity of the absence should mean he isn't significantly limited whenever he does take the mound.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Set for another bullpen

Freeland (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports. It appears Freeland won't need to embark on a rehab assignment, so Saturday's session could be his last before returning from the 15-day injured list, potentially as soon as the Rockies' upcoming road series against the Reds that commences Tuesday. Prior to landing on the IL due to left shoulder inflammation, Freeland posted a 2.30 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB across 15.2 innings.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Tosses 41 pitches in sim game

Freeland (shoulder) threw 41 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Freeland utilized his entire arsenal and told reporters after the session that he had no issues with his shoulder. The 32-year-old southpaw is eligible to be activated off the 15-day injured list April 28, and it looks like he'll be ready to return to major-league action at that time, barring any setbacks.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Shelved with shoulder inflammation

The Rockies placed Freeland on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to left shoulder inflammation. Freeland technically drew a start in Sunday's game against the Padres, but the injury resulted in him being scratched without throwing a pitch in that outing. After a few days of rest, Freeland didn't bounce back well enough to avoid the IL. The veteran left-hander will be eligible to rejoin the Colorado rotation before the end of this month, though it's unclear whether he will be cleared to start by that date.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Managing sore shoulder

Freeland was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday against the Padres due to left posterior shoulder soreness, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The injury seems to have been a late development since the Rockies were unable to get the change on the lineup card, resulting in Freeland technically starting the game without throwing a pitch. It's unclear if a trip to the injured list will be necessary, but it wouldn't be surprising if the left-hander needs to miss some time given the nature of the injury.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Late scratch Sunday

Freeland isn't pitching as scheduled for Sunday's game against the Padres for unspecified reasons, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The left-hander never took the mound Sunday, though he technically still started the contest before being replaced without throwing a pitch. Freeland is presumably dealing with an injury of some kind, but his status going forward will remain up in the air until the team updates his status.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Tosses 6.1 frames in first victory

Freeland (1-1) earned the win over Houston on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out five batters over 6.1 innings. Freeland gave up a solo homer to Christian Walker in the second inning, but that was the only tally the Astros were able to put on the scoreboard against him. The left-hander threw 55 of 81 pitches for strikes and got an impressive 15 whiffs en route to his first quality start and first win of the campaign. Though Freeland didn't get into the win column in either of his first two starts, he allowed just three runs over 9.1 frames during those outings, and his season ERA now stands at a tidy 2.30. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which lines up to come in San Diego this weekend.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Tosses five innings in no-decision

Freeland didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Blue Jays. He tossed five innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out six. This was a clear step in the right direction for Freeland, who took the loss in his 2026 debut after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings against the Marlins on Friday. Freeland has been a reliable innings-eater for Colorado in recent years, and he lines up to make his next start against the Astros on the road.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Inefficient in Friday's loss

Freeland (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Rockies fell 2-1 to the Marlins, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two. The veteran southpaw limited the damage against him, but Freeland needed 81 pitches (53 strikes) to record 13 outs before getting lifted. Freeland's been a fairly reliable innings eater for Colorado, averaging 27 starts and about 145.1 innings over the last five seasons, but his 4.82 ERA and 1.43 WHIP during that time aren't just a product of calling Coors Field home. He lines up to make his next start on the road next week against the Blue Jays.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Named Opening Day starter

The Rockies announced Tuesday that Freeland will start Colorado's March 27 season opener against the Marlins in Miami. It will be Freeland's fifth career Opening Day nod, the most in Rockies franchise history. The 32-year-old Freeland put together an average season in 2025, logging a 4.98 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 124:38 K:BB across 162.2 innings. He started 31 games, tied for his most in a single season since 2018, but Freeland led the majors with 17 losses. His 4.51 FIP away from Coors was actually worse than his 3.76 FIP at home.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Making exhibition start Wednesday

Freeland (back) will start Wednesday's exhibition game against Team USA, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. It will be the first game appearance this spring for Freeland, who has been slow-played while dealing with back spasms. The veteran lefty was cleared to start Wednesday following a couple bullpen sessions and he should have time to build up his stamina for Opening Day.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Could make spring debut next week

Freeland (back) had a successful bullpen session Wednesday and could be ready for his Cactus League debut next week, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Freeland has been held back by mid-back spasms but seems to be on the mend. If the veteran left-hander is able to get into a game next week, he will have plenty of time to ramp up ahead of Opening Day. Freeland will likely draw the Opening Day start for the Rockies, if healthy.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Tending to back spasms

The Rockies announced Monday that Freeland has been slowed by mid-back spasms during camp, but the veteran southpaw is slated to throw this week, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The back issue will end up delaying Freeland's entry into the Rockies' spring pitching schedule, but assuming he can avoid any setbacks while ramping up his throwing, he should be fully stretched out by the start of the regular season. Freeland turned in a 4.98 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 124:38 K:BB in 162.2 innings over his 31 starts with the Rockies in 2025.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Logs quality start in loss

Freeland (5-17) took the loss against the Giants on Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out four across six innings. It was a tough loss for Freeland, whose lone (but crucial) blemish came in the third inning, when he yielded a three-run homer to Casey Schmitt. Freeland will end the season with 17 losses, which is the most of his career and would lead the majors at the end of the season unless the Nationals' Mitchell Parker (9-16) were to take a loss out of the bullpen. Freeland will end the 2025 season with a 4.98 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 124:38 K:BB across 162.2 innings.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Fans seven during win

Kyle Freeland (5-16) earned the win Sunday against the Angels, allowing one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven over six innings. Freeland bounced back from a rough outing in his previous start, when he surrendered six runs, by limiting Los Angeles to just a first-inning RBI single from Jo Adell before settling in to retire 14 of the final 17 batters he faced. It marked the right-hander's 13th quality start in 30 outings this year. Despite Sunday's win, Freeland remains tied with Mitchell Parker for the MLB lead in losses with 16. The 32-year-old now owns a 5.00 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 120:37 K:BB across 156.2 innings and is scheduled to face San Francisco in his next outing.

  • Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Poor outing in loss

Freeland (4-16) allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out one over 5.2 innings to take the loss versus the Marlins. Freeland hadn't allowed six runs in a start since Aug. 6 versus the Blue Jays. He was fading in the sixth inning when a rain delay occurred, bringing his start to a close at 73 pitches (52 strikes). The veteran southpaw is now at a 5.14 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 113:36 K:BB through 150.2 innings across 29 starts this season. He's projected for a home start versus the Angels over the weekend.
