McClanahan (7-4) allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out six and earning a win over Minnesota.

McClanahan started the outing with three shutout innings before allowing a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. The Rays provided plenty of offense to help the rookie southpaw pick up his third straight victory. It was the first time in four starts that he failed to complete six innings but he lowered his season ERA to 3.73 in the process. McClanahan will carry a 105:30 K:BB into next week's projected home start against Baltimore.

Severino (groin/elbow) will return to New York to be evaluated after he was scratched from Friday's rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Triple-A manager Doug Davis said that Severino "didn't feel right" while warming up Friday, so the team held him out as a precaution. While Davis is optimistic that the right-hander isn't dealing with a serious issue, more clarity regarding his status will likely be revealed once he meets with team doctors.

Irvin yielded five runs (three earned) on eight hits and a walk across five innings Friday against Texas. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision.

The Rangers jumped on Irvin early, plating three runs in the first inning. The southpaw settled in and twirled four shutout frames before allowing the first two Rangers to reach base in the sixth, getting charged with those runs after Sergio Romo gave up a three-run shot to Yohel Pozo, the first batter he faced. Irvin is now sporting a 3.52 ERA and a 96:25 K:BB through 23 starts this season. He's projected to take the mound on the road against the White Sox next week.

Dunning allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in Friday's win over Oakland. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.

Dunning looked smooth out of the gate, allowing just two Oakland batters to reach base through four shutout frames. He stumbled in the fifth, allowing two runs before he was removed from the contest. It was his first start since Aug. 2 after a stint on the injured list with an ankle injury. The second-year righty has given up three or fewer runs in seven straight outings, dropping his season ERA to 4.06 through 99.2 innings this season. Dunning is lined up to face Seattle at home next week.

Severino (groin/elbow) was scratched from his rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday due to an injury, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports.

The weather ahead of Friday's minor-league contest looked questionable, so the reason for Severino's scratch wasn't initially known. However, the right-hander told the team that something didn't feel right while he was warming up, so he was shut down. Triple-A manager Doug Davis didn't know what injury led to Severino being scratched, and it's not yet clear what impact the issue will have on his return timetable.

Watkins (2-4) allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks with only one strikeout in four innings Friday, taking the loss versus Boston.

After a decent first inning, Watkins gave up four runs in the second and one more in the third and fourth each. The right-hander's performance is trending the wrong way -- he's allowed four or more runs in each of his last four starts, all losses. He now has a 5.25 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 23:14 K:BB in 36 innings. If he remains in the rotation going forward, a tough road start in Tampa Bay awaits next week.

Urquidy (shoulder) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Saturday, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.

It's possible that this session could be postponed due to a tropical storm closing in on Florida. Urquidy continues to advance with his rehab, which is good news. The goal is for him to rejoin the big club Sept. 1.

Kluber (shoulder) pitched 1.1 innings for Double-A Somerset on Thursday, allowing five runs on two hits and four walks while striking out one.

The right-hander had a hard time finding the plate in his first game action since May 25. Per Marly Rivera of ESPN.com, Kluber threw only 20 of 45 pitches for strikes, and he issued as many free passes as he registered outs. The veteran hurler said he was encouraged by how he felt after the outing, however, and indicated that he won't be putting a lot of stock in the results, according to Mike Ashmore of PatriotsBaseball.com. He'll likely need a few more rehab appearances before potentially rejoining the Yankees.

Dunning (ankle) was activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of his start Friday against the A's.

He missed the minimum time with an ankle injury and did not require a rehab assignment. Dunning has a 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and eight strikeouts in 16 innings over three starts since the All-Star break.

Houck was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Friday, though he's expected to return to pitch Tuesday against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

The Red Sox have taken advantage of the league's roster rules to effectively use a 27-man roster in recent weeks, as Houck has now been optioned after each of his last three big-league starts but returned each time without making a minor-league appearance. He gave up a career-high four runs (three earned) in five innings in his latest outing Thursday against the Rays and was saddled with the loss, though it was far from a terrible performance, as he struck out eight batters while walking none. Alex Verdugo returned from the restricted list in a corresponding move.
