  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Out with bruised hand

Contreras (hand) is not in the lineup Wednesday at Baltimore.

Contreras made an early exit from Tuesday's win over the Orioles because of a right hand contusion and is presumably day-to-day. Andrew Knizner will start at catcher and bat seventh for the Cardinals in Wednesday's series finale at Camden Yards.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Gets breather Wednesday

Realmuto is not in the lineup Wednesday versus Atlanta.

Garrett Stubbs will start at catcher and bat eighth as Realmuto grabs a day of rest. He went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts in the Phillies' loss Tuesday to the NL East leaders.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Taking seat Wednesday

Stephenson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

Luke Maile will do the catching for Connor Phillips. Stephenson and Maile have alternated starts behind the plate for the last eight contests.

  • Joey Bart C | ATL

Giants' Joey Bart: Optioned to Triple-A

Bart was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

He was up with the big club while Patrick Bailey was on the 7-day concussion injured list, but with Bailey having now been activated, Bart's presence is no longer required. Bart was hitless in four games during this most recent stint in the majors.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Back from concussion IL

Bailey was activated from the 7-day concussion injured list Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

With his concussion symptoms subsided, Bailey has rejoined the Giants following a minimum absence and will do his best to aid the club in its quest for a playoff spot. Joey Bart was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

  • Yan Gomes C | CHC

Cubs' Yan Gomes: Sitting out Wednesday

Gomes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Colorado, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

It's a day game after Gomes had caught each of the last four contests, so it's no surprise he's getting a breather. Miguel Amaya is behind the dish Wednesday.

  • Austin Wynns C | TEX

Rockies' Austin Wynns: Gets start at catcher

Wynns is in the lineup Wednesday against the Cubs.

Wynns will make his fifth appearance in a 10-game span. The catcher will have started in four of those games. The 32-year-old is starting in Elias Diaz's place.

  • Elias Diaz C | TEX

Rockies' Elias Diaz: On bench Wednesday

Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Cubs.

Diaz will be on the bench for the third time in seven games. Before this stretch, he had appeared in 14 straight games. Austin Wynns will start at catcher and bat ninth in the All-Star's place.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Flashes skills in Tuesday's win

Alvarez went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and a stolen base in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

The 21-year-old backstop took Scott McGough deep in the eighth for his 23rd homer of the season, a couple innings after he'd swiped his second bag of the year. Alvarez has looked fatigued down the stretch and is slashing just .164/.303/.291 over his last 20 games, but he remains a key part of the Mets' youth movement heading into 2024.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Plates winning run

Stephenson went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over Detroit.

Stephenson lined a pitch to right field to score the eventual game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning. The catcher has fought off a nasty second-half slump and is 9-for-23 (.391) with four extra-base hits and six RBI over the last seven games.
