  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Playing time likely to rise

Crow-Armstrong will start in center field and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Giants.

With Mike Tauchman (groin) landing on the 10-day injured list, Crow-Armstrong looks like he could have a clear path to regular playing time in the Chicago outfield. Crow-Armstrong has now drawn starts in both of the Cubs' games since Tauchman's placement on the IL. The 22-year-old brings elite defense to center field, but he's thus far managed a pitiful .173/.240/.236 slash line through his first 125 big-league plate appearances.

  • Joc Pederson DH | TEX

Diamondbacks' Joc Pederson: Sitting versus lefty

Pederson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Nationals.

Pederson's only start against a lefty this season came earlier this month versus a left-handed opener in the Giants' Erik Miller. With the Nationals sending southpaw Patrick Corbin to the bump Wednesday, Pederson will take a seat while Eugenio Suarez serves as Arizona's designated hitter.

  • Reed Garrett RP | NYM

Mets' Reed Garrett: Racks up seventh win

Garrett (7-2) picked up the win Tuesday over the Rangers, striking out one in a perfect eighth inning.

The right-hander carved up the heart of the Texas order on 12 pitches (seven strikes), and Garrett was rewarded when New York completed a comeback in the top of the ninth. The journeyman reliever came into 2024 with a career 7.11 ERA in only 44.1 big-league innings, but he's been a revelation as a high-leverage option for the Mets, producing a 3.03 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 55:17 K:BB through 35.2 frames while adding three saves and six holds to his win total over 28 appearances.

  • Jake McCarthy LF | COL

Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Out against left-hander

McCarthy is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Nationals.

Left-hander Patrick Corbin is toeing the slab for the Nationals, so the lefty-hitting McCarthy will begin the game on the bench. Randal Grichuk will patrol right field for the Diamondbacks.

  • Brandon Nimmo RF | TEX

Mets' Brandon Nimmo: Goes yard again versus Texas

Nimmo went 1-for-4 with a walk, a solo home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's win over the Rangers.

The veteran outfielder took Michael Lorenzen deep in the sixth inning, helping the Mets roar back from an early 6-2 deficit. Nimmo has gone yard in back-to-back games, and he's slashing .328/.381/.517 over 14 contests in June as he climbs out of an early-season hole. Despite the surge, his .766 OPS so far in 2024 would be Nimmo's lowest mark since his 32-game big-league debut in 2016.

  • Spencer Howard SP | CLE

Giants' Spencer Howard: Working behind opener

Howard is expected to serve as the Giants' bulk reliever Wednesday against the Cubs behind opening pitcher Erik Miller.

Howard worked as a starter his last time out Friday against the Angels, but he was roughed up for four earned runs on seven hits and four walks before he was pulled from the game midway through the third inning. The Giants will have him work behind Miller on Wednesday with the hope of generating better results from the right-hander.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Three more hits Tuesday

Alvarez went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's win over the Rangers.

The Mets' offense has suddenly roared to life, scoring 52 runs over the course of a seven-game win streak, and it's perhaps no coincidence that Alvarez returned from his thumb injury the day before the streak started. The 22-year-old backstop has delivered back-to-back three-hit performances, boosting his slash line on the season to .269/.305/.372 through 24 contests with a homer, nine runs and 14 RBI.

  • Erik Miller RP | BOS

Giants' Erik Miller: Opening Wednesday's game

Miller will serve as the Giants' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

Miller is operating as an opener for the sixth time this season. On the previous five occasions, Miller has never been asked to record more than five outs, so he's unlikely to remain in the game for more than two innings. Spencer Howard is expected to work in bulk relief behind Miller.

  • Pete Alonso 1B | BAL

Mets' Pete Alonso: Stays hot Tuesday

Alonso went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a run scored and an RBI in Tuesday's win over the Rangers.

The 29-year-old has reached base 10 times in the last four games, with three of his eight hits during that stretch going for extra bases (two doubles and a homer). Alonso is slashing .274/.366/.500 through 15 games in June with three home runs and 13 RBI as he looks to record his third straight 40-homer campaign. He currently has 15 round trippers.

  • Giants' Wilmer Flores: Heading to bench Wednesday

Flores is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

Flores has now hit the bench in two straight matchups with right-handed pitchers, though it's not yet clear if he's moved back into a pure platoon role at first base with the lefty-hitting Trenton Brooks, who gets the start Wednesday but is hitting .143 over 21 at-bats since getting called up from Triple-A Sacramento. Flores, meanwhile, is hitting .212 on the season, and he owns a .198/.291/.287 slash line over 117 plate appearances against righties.
