  • Nolan Arenado 3B | ARI

Cardinals' Nolan Arenado: Battling sprained finger

Arenado was diagnosed with a right index finger sprain Tuesday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Arenado initially injured himself Sunday and worked as the DH on Monday, but he will be held out of the starting nine entirely Tuesday while Nolan Gorman starts at the hot corner. X-rays on Arenado's finger came back negative, so he's being considered day-to-day for now.

  • Ezequiel Tovar SS | COL

Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Working off tee

Tovar (oblique) said Tuesday that he has been hitting off a tee for four days, but he has not yet gone through full batting practice, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Tovar has been out of action since departing a game June 2 after tweaking his left oblique. He was able to start activity by jogging June 14, and while that was not a gigantic step forward, he has since progressed to taking swings. There is still no set timeline for the shortstop's return.

  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

Braves' Chris Sale: Moves to 60-day IL

Atlanta transferred Sale (ribs) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

Sale landed on the injured list in late June due to a ribcage fracture. Manager Brian Snitker said last week that the team still expects Sale to return before the end of the season, though the left-hander's move to the 60-day IL ensures that won't be back until at least Aug. 20. The team acquired Hunter Stratton from Pittsburgh on Tuesday, replacing Sale on the 40-man roster, and Didier Fuentes will likely remain Atlanta's fifth starter going forward.

  • Sam Hilliard LF | COL

Rockies' Sam Hilliard: DFA'd by Rockies

The Rockies designated Hilliard for assignment Tuesday, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.

His roster spot will be absorbed by Yanquiel Fernandez. Hilliard accepted an outright assignment by the Rockies prior to Opening Day, but it's unclear whether he would do so again, provided he clears waivers.

  • Clay Holmes RP | NYM

Mets' Clay Holmes: Tuesday's start postponed

Holmes won't start as scheduled Tuesday versus the Brewers since the game was postponed due to inclement weather.

The contest will be made up via a split doubleheader Wednesday, with Holmes likely to start one of those games. The veteran right-hander has failed to cover six frames in any of his past three starts, and he has a 3.07 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 10:12 K:BB over 14.2 innings during that stretch.

  • Tanner Gordon RP | COL

Rockies' Tanner Gordon: Activated, optioned to Triple-A

The Rockies activated Gordon (oblique) from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.

Gordon is over his oblique strain, but the Rockies have elected to keep him at Albuquerque where he had been on his rehab assignment rather than adding him back to the major-league roster. The righty will be part of Albuquerque's rotation.

  • Braves' Hunter Stratton: Joining Atlanta

The Pirates traded Stratton to Atlanta on Tuesday in exchange for outfielder Titus Dumitru and cash.

Stratton will report to Triple-A Gwinnett to begin his tenure with his new organization, though he will claim a spot on Atlanta's 40-man roster. The 28-year-old righty was DFA'd by Pittsburgh on Thursday after giving up seven earned runs in 2.2 innings with the big club, and he'll likely need to show improvement in the minors before getting a chance in Atlanta. Chris Sale (ribs) was transferred to the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Rockies' Braxton Fulford: Optioned to Triple-A

The Rockies optioned Fulford to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.

Fulford has posted a .687 OPS with one homer over 14 games while occasionally spelling top catcher Hunter Goodman behind the plate. Austin Nola is grabbing Fulford's roster spot.

  • Freddy Peralta SP | NYM

Brewers' Freddy Peralta: Game postponed Tuesday

Peralta won't start as scheduled Tuesday against the Mets since the game was postponed due to inclement weather.

The game will be made up via a split doubleheader Wednesday, with Peralta poised to take the mound for one of those contests. The right-hander is 3-0 in his past four starts and has a 28.6 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 23:5 K:BB across 22 innings during that span.

  • Austin Nola C | COL

    Rockies' Austin Nola: Contract selected

The Rockies selected Nola's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.

The Rockies are swapping out backup catchers, with Nola taking Braxton Fulford's spot on the roster. Nola was hitting .347/.411/.474 with one home run in 26 contests with Albuquerque and will see the occasional start at catcher on days when Hunter Goodman is resting or serving as the designated hitter.
