Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

For the second day in a row, the right-handed-hitting Goldschmidt will give way to the left-handed-hitting Ben Rice at first base and head to the bench while the Blue Jays send another righty (Chris Bassitt) to the bump. Though the Yankees won't completely close the door on having Goldschmidt play versus righties, he may have to settle for more of a part-time role in those matchups since he's produced a weak .246/.290/.333 (75 wRC+) over 271 plate appearances against them so far this season.

Melton (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, surrendering six runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings as the Tigers were downed 6-1 by the Pirates. He struck out seven.

Called up earlier in the day to make his MLB debut, Melton flashed some of the strikeout stuff that earned him a promotion, but the 24-year-old right-hander also served up two homers, including a second-inning grand slam by Spencer Horwitz. Detroit's rotation plans are a bit chaotic right now, as the Tigers don't get a day off until July 31 while Tarik Skubal (personal) is currently away from the team for the birth of his child, so it's not clear if Melton will get a further audition after this performance.

Wells is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

Wells will get a breather for the series finale after he started behind the dish Monday and Tuesday. J.C. Escarra will form a battery Wednesday with starting pitcher Max Fried.

Eovaldi (back) will start for the Rangers on Friday against Atlanta, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Eovaldi had to be scratched from his last scheduled outing this past weekend due to back tightness, but he's bounced back since then and has been cleared to rejoin the rotation. The veteran right-hander will be pitching on 11 days rest, as his last start came in the final game before the All-Star break July 13 in Houston

The Rangers designated Jackson for assignment Wednesday.

Jackson still leads the Rangers with nine saves this season, but he has posted an uninspiring 4.11 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 24:19 K:BB over 35 innings. The right-hander is under contract at a manageable $1.5 million salary, so he could attract some interest via trade or waivers. Even if he quickly finds a home in a new organization, Jackson is unlikely to earn usage in high-leverage spots out of the bullpen, at least not right away.

The Rangers activated Gray (forearm) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

Gray has been sidelined all season after suffering a fractured right forearm during spring training. According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers plan to deploy Gray as a reliever, perhaps filling the setup role vacated by the injured Chris Martin (calf). Gray allowed three runs with an 8:2 K:BB over 8.2 rehab innings and threw 61 pitches in his last outing, so he's stretched out enough to make multi-inning appearances. However, the Rangers' preference may be to use him in shorter, high-leverage situations initially.

Sosa is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Rays.

Sosa will get a routine day off after he had started each of the previous 14 games for the White Sox. Chase Meidroth will occupy second base in Wednesday's series finale.

Loperfido is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees.

The left-handed-hitting Loperfido had been included in the lineup in both of the previous two contests, but he'll head to the bench Wednesday while southpaw Max Fried toes the rubber for the Yankees. Loperfido will likely see his opportunities to play against right-handed pitching take a hit once Daulton Varsho (hamstring) potentially returns from the injured list later this week.

The Athletics designated Davidson for assignment Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for lefty Ben Bowden, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. He was a first-round pick back in 2019 but hasn't developed as hoped, slashing .263/.412/.397 in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this season as a 27-year-old. Davidson offers some positional versatility and is still young enough that he might draw some interest on waivers.

The Athletics selected Bowden's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Bowden earned a promotion by putting up a 1.36 ERA and 41:18 K:BB over 39.2 innings at Las Vegas. The left-handed reliever's lone action in the majors to this point came with the Rockies in 3032, when he collected a 6.56 ERA over 39 appearances.
