  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Homers in win

Abreu went 1-for-2 with two walks and a solo home run in Friday's 2-0 win over the Rays. Abreu's third-inning home run was all the Red Sox needed in a pitcher's duel at Fenway Park. It was the second homer in the last four games and sixth of the season for Abreu, who has knocked in runs in five of the last seven contests. He's been a steady producer since Opening Day and is slashing .303/.387/.486 over 163 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Notches third steal

Abreu went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and one RBI in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Rays. Abreu has gone 7-for-26 (.269) over the first seven games of May, and he's added a 6:9 BB:K and four RBI. The outfielder also has two steals over his last three contests, though he's up to just three thefts on four attempts, as running isn't a large part of his game. The outfielder is batting .300 with an .841 OPS, five home runs, 17 RBI, 19 runs scored, six doubles and one triple across 37 contests and has often been the Red Sox's most reliable hitter early in 2026.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Strong showing in Detroit

Abreu went 3-for-4 with a walk, a solo home run, a second run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Tigers. The 26-year-old outfielder led the Red Sox in times on base while going back-to-back with Willson Contreras to lead off the fourth inning against Framber Valdez, a power display that prompted the frustrated southpaw to hit Trevor Story with a 94.4 mph fastball on his next pitch and sparked the benches to clear. Abreu has been a bright spot for Boston over the last couple weeks, slashing .362/.483/.532 over the last 13 games with two doubles, two homers, two steals, five RBI and seven runs.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Encouraging effort in loss

Abreu went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run and an additional run scored in Friday's 10-3 loss to the Orioles. Abreu, who snapped an 18-game drought without a home run and a 15-game stretch without an extra-base hit, was the lone bright spot in another Red Sox loss, their fourth straight defeat. After a strong start over the first 13 games, Abreu has hit the skids and entered Friday's contest on a 6-for-40 (.150) stretch over the subsequent 11 contests.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Getting first day off Wednesday

Abreu is out of the lineup for Wednesday's contest in Minnesota. Abreu will receive his first breather of the season in a planned day off. Roman Anthony will occupy right field, Jarren Duran will play left field, and Masataka Yoshida will serve as the designated hitter as the Red Sox try to avoid the sweep.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Homers again Sunday

Abreu went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Reds. Abreu gave the Red Sox an early lead with a two-run blast in the fourth inning. The 26-year-old is off to a torrid start, going 6-for-13 with four extra-base hits and four RBI while starting three straight contests. He posted a .247/.317/.469 slash with 22 homers last regular season and could take a step forward with manager Alex Cora planning to deploy him more often against lefties in 2026.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: With Team Venezuela

Abreu went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Team Venezuela in Friday's 6-2 win over the Netherlands at the World Baseball Classic. Prior to the WBC, Abreu appeared in six Grapefruit League games for Boston, going 2-for-14 with three walks. The Red Sox would like to see the lefty-hitting Abreu become an everyday right fielder, against both righties and lefties, but he had just three plate appearances against left-handers (0-for-3) during his time in Boston's camp. Abreu did have one at-bat against a lefty Friday and singled in a run during Venezuela's four-run fifth inning.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Will face more lefties in 2026

The Red Sox plan to challenge Abreu to face more left-handers this coming season, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Abreu has mostly been limited to facing right-handers since his MLB arrival in 2023, but the Red Sox are ready to give him a shot against all starters. "With Willy and some of the lefties, we have to see if they can do it," manager Alex Cora said. "It's about that time, especially with Abreu. If he can hit lefties and hit for power and play defense the way he's done the last few years, he can be the guy." Abreu's made just 15 starts against lefties and has 145 total plate appearances against southpaws since 2023, struggling to a .205 average and .589 OPS.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Taking seat Thursday

Abreu isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game versus Toronto, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports. Abreu will get a breather Thursday after going 2-for-11 with a run scored and four strikeouts since returning from the injured list Sunday. Rob Refsnyder will fill the void in right field and bat eighth.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Likely returning Sunday

Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that he expects Abreu (calf) to return from the injured list Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Abreu has been sidelined with a strained calf for more than a month, but it appears he is nearing the end of his recovery. The 26-year-old outfielder is slashing .253/.325/.486 on the season and will almost certainly reclaim his role as Boston's primary right fielder once activated.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Could be activated Saturday

Abreu (calf) will fly to Tampa Bay on Saturday, and a decision regarding his activation from the 10-day injured list is expected to be made shortly after, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Abreu had a good workout at Fenway on Friday, and he'll join the team in Florida ahead of Saturday's game. It's unclear if he'll be activated Saturday or Sunday specifically, but a return during Boston's series in Tampa Bay is expected. The outfielder has been on the shelf since Aug. 21 due to a strained right calf.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Day-to-day, eyeing weekend return

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Abreu (calf) isn't ready to return from the 10-day injured list, but the skipper is "hopeful" that the outfielder will be ready for activation at some point during the team's weekend series at Tampa Bay, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports. MLB.com reported Saturday that Abreu was running at about 85 percent intensity as he works his way back from a right calf strain. Per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Cora noted that Abreu was scheduled to do some sprinting Wednesday, so if the 26-year-old is able to run at closer to 100 percent speed in that workout, it could be enough for him to return to action this weekend. The Red Sox have been leaning on a committee of Rob Refsnyder, Nate Eaton and Nick Sogard in right field while the 2024 Gold Glove Award winner has been on the shelf.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Feels OK after running

Abreu (calf) reported no issues after taking part in running sessions Friday and Saturday, MLB.com reports. Boston manager Alex Cora said Saturday the outfielder came out of the two sessions feeling "OK," but he stopped short of offering a timeline for the outfielder's return. Abreu has been on the shelf since Aug. 21 due to a right calf strain.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Scheduled to run Saturday

Abreu (calf) will run Saturday for the first time in over a week, MLB.com reports. The Red Sox suddenly find themselves in an outfield bind after Roman Anthony (oblique) landed on the injured list. Getting Abreu back would help, and Saturday's session will potentially help determine a timeline for his return. He attempted to run about 10 days ago and didn't bounce back from that session.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Could return late next week

Abreu (calf) did some hitting and "moved around" in the outfield Friday, and manager Alex Cora said the outfielder could be back with the Red Sox next week, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports. Abreu exited from a game against Miami on Aug. 17 due to right calf tightness and was subsequently placed on the IL. He'll be eligible to be activated next Thursday, and it sounds like there's a possibility Abreu will return when (or shortly after) his IL stay is up. While he's been out of action, Roman Anthony has gotten most of the reps in right field.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Will be placed on 10-day IL

The Red Sox will place Abreu (calf) on the 10-day injured list prior to Thursday's game against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Abreu tweaked his right calf in Sunday's game against the Marlins and was not able to make enough improvement since then to avoid the IL. It's not clear at this point how much time he might miss. Jhostynxon Garcia is taking Abreu's spot on the active roster.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: IL stint not ruled out

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Abreu (calf) feels better Monday, but the outfielder remains a candidate to go on the 10-day injured list, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Abreu was removed from Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Marlins due to right calf tightness and has already been ruled out for the Red Sox's two-game series with the Orioles to begin the week. The outfielder previously said that his goal was to return to the lineup for Thursday's series opener versus the Yankees, but his availability for that contest isn't a given. Roman Anthony will fill in for Abreu in right field in Monday's series opener with Baltimore.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Taking seat against southpaw

Abreu is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Philadelphia. It's southpaw Cristopher Sanchez on the hill for the Phillies, and Abreu will be one of Boston's left-handed-swinging regulars to begin the contest on the bench. Roman Anthony is in right field and batting second.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Homers in win

Abreu went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 10-2 win over Colorado. Abreu launched his 18th homer of the season in the fifth inning, extending Boston's lead to 4-0. Wednesday's game also featured the return of Masataka Yoshida, the fourth lefty-batting outfielder, and he served as the DH while Ceddanne Rafaela was given a rest day. It's unclear how manager Alex Cora plans to accommodate at-bats for all five outfielders going forward. Prior to Yoshida's return, the existing four outfielders all deserved playing time, and the DH spot made it possible.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Idle against lefty

Abreu is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals. For the second straight game, Abreu will hit the bench while the Nationals send another southpaw to the bump in Shinnosuke Ogasawara. Roman Anthony will cover right field in Abreu's place, opening up the designated hitter spot for Rob Refsnyder.
