Brandon Crawford SS | STL
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Minimum IL stay possible
Crawford (forearm) believes he'll be ready to return from the 10-day injured list right around when he's first eligible Aug. 29, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Giants manager Gabe Kapler was a bit more cautious, saying Wednesday only that he thought there was enough time left in the season for Crawford to contribute. Crawford landed on the IL over the weekend with a strained left (non-throwing) forearm. The team has signed Paul DeJong as a stopgap at shortstop.

Casey Schmitt DH | SF
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Returns to bench role
Schmitt is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Schmitt started at three different infield positions the last three games, going hitless across eight at-bats. Since June 19, Schmitt has mustered a .086/.202/.111 slash line over a stretch of 37 games. Though he's been valued for his defensive work, Schmitt's lack of production at the plate over a prolonged stretch looks as though it'll force him into a utility role even while the Giants are without Brandon Crawford (forearm). The Giants signed veteran Paul DeJong on Wednesday, and he's expected to take over as the team's everyday shortstop sans Crawford.

Johan Camargo SS | SF
Giants' Johan Camargo: Loses 40-man roster spot
Camargo was designated for assignment Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Camargo loses his spot on the Giants' 26-man active roster and 40-man roster following the signing of Paul DeJong. He had been seeing regular action at shortstop of late for San Francisco but will now go through the waiver process.

Osleivis Basabe SS | SF
Rays' Osleivis Basabe: Cranks first big-league homer
Basabe went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 12-4 blowout victory over Colorado.
Basabe capped off an eight-run, eighth-inning rally with his first major-league home run, a grand slam to left. The 22-year-old shortstop has hit safely in six of his first eight career games, with three doubles, one homer, eight RBI and eight runs scored across 33 at-bats since getting promoted from Triple-A on Aug. 12.

Noelvi Marte 3B | CIN
Reds' Noelvi Marte: Sitting for Game 1 of twin bill
Marte is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Angels.
Marte will retreat to the bench for the first game of the day after he picked up his first two big-league starts Sunday and Tuesday, going 2-for-8 with a double and a stolen base. Expect him to re-enter the starting nine at either third base, shortstop or designated hitter for the nightcap.

Jorge Mateo SS | ATL
Orioles' Jorge Mateo: Registers steal in loss
Mateo went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Tuesday's 6-3 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays.
Mateo was in the lineup for the fourth time in five games, all of which have seen left-handed opposing starters. The shortstop has gone 5-for-27 (.185) with two steals over 11 games since the start of August. It appears he's in a short-side platoon role, and that will mean less playing time once the Orioles face some righties. Mateo is slashing .209/.255/.347 with 26 thefts, seven home runs, 32 RBI and 47 runs scored through 302 plate appearances.

Oneil Cruz CF | PIT
Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Halts running due to soreness
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Cruz has shut down his running progression due to soreness in his surgically repaired left ankle, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.
Cruz began a running program a couple weeks ago, but his ankle hasn't responded as hoped and his rehab has "plateaued," according to Tomczyk. As for whether the talented young shortstop could still return before the end of the season, Tomczyk said cryptically that "we are running out of days." The snag that Cruz has hit in his rehab certainly isn't a positive development, and with no reason to push him to return this season, the Pirates may proceed slowly with the 24-year-old as they prepare him to be ready for spring training.

Tim Anderson 2B | LAA
White Sox's Tim Anderson: Returns from suspension
Anderson (suspension) will start at shortstop and bat leadoff Wednesday against the Mariners after being reinstated from the restricted list, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.
Anderson initially received a six-game suspension for his involvement in an Aug. 5 brawl with the Guardians, but the ban was later reduced to five games last Thursday following an appeal. After sitting out each of the last five games, Anderson is back in action and should resume duties as Chicago's everyday shortstop. Elvis Andrus had been serving as the White Sox's primary option at shortstop while Anderson was out but should now compete with Lenyn Sosa for playing time at second base.

Aledmys Diaz 1B | HOU
Athletics' Aledmys Diaz: Knocks in three Tuesday
Diaz went 1-for-3 with an RBI sacrifice fly and a two-run double in a win over the Royals on Tuesday.
Diaz extended the Athletics' lead to 2-0 with his first-inning sac fly and then knocked in Oakland's final two runs with his timely two-bagger in the third. The veteran infielder has now hit safely in six straight starts, a stretch during which he's boasting a .391 average with five extra-base hits.

Javier Baez SS | DET
Tigers' Javier Baez: Remains out Wednesday
Baez (illness) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
Baez will take a seat for the second day in a row while he battles a flu bug. Zach McKinstry will slide over from the keystone to fill in for Baez at shortstop.
