  • Matt McLain 2B | CIN

Reds' Matt McLain: Aims for Aug. 12 rehab assignment

Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that McLain (shoulder) has started swinging a bat and is hoping to begin a rehab assignment Aug. 12, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Certainly, McLain will need to check off numerous boxes before he's cleared for game action, but he's trending well in his recovery from left shoulder surgery, which he had in late March. Given the long layoff, McLain will need an extended rehab assignment before returning from the 60-day injured list, possibly in late August or early September.

  • Cubs' Miles Mastrobuoni: Returns to bench role

Mastrobuoni is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles.

The lefty-hitting Mastrobuoni had been included in the lineup in each of the Cubs' last three matchups with right-handed pitchers, but the uptick in playing time looks to have been the result of outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong being unavailable due to a thumb injury. After serving as a pinch runner in Tuesday's 9-2 win, Crow-Armstrong has received the green light to re-enter the starting nine Wednesday for the first time in a week, so Mastrobuoni will head back to the bench.

  • Jose Caballero SS | NYY

Rays' Jose Caballero: Not in Wednesday's lineup

Caballero is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees.

Caballero had started five of the previous six contests, but he will begin Wednesday's contest on the bench. Taylor Walls and Richie Palacios will form the Rays' double-play combination Wednesday.

  • David Hamilton 3B | MIL

Red Sox's David Hamilton: Out against left-hander

Hamilton is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Jamie Westbrook and Ceddanne Rafaela will serve as the Red Sox's starters in the middle infield while the lefty-hitting Hamilton sits against southpaw JP Sears. Hamilton should continue to serve as Boston's primary option at second base against right-handers with Enmanuel Valdez having been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.

  • Max Schuemann LF | NYY

Athletics' Max Schuemann: Grabs eighth steal Tuesday

Schuemann went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a walk in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday.

The rookie extended his on-base streak to seven games, a stretch during which he's cobbled together an impressive .350 average and 1.130 OPS, along with three of his eight steals on the season. Schuemann has a modest four-game hitting streak going as well, pushing his improving season slash line to .236/.329/.347 across 234 plate appearances.

  • Paul DeJong SS | DET

White Sox's Paul DeJong: Drawing start at third base

DeJong will start at third base and bat seventh in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Twins.

DeJong played plenty of third base in the minors, but he'll be making his first start at the hot corner at the major-league level. Meanwhile, Nicky Lopez is at shortstop and Lenyn Sosa is at second base. Seemingly, the shakeup is tied to Yoan Moncada (adductor) beginning a rehab assignment this week, as Sosa could see more reps at second base once Moncada returns from the 60-day injured list.

  • Brett Wisely 2B | ATL

Giants' Brett Wisely: Provides clutch hitting

Wisely went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a steal in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays.

Wisely stepped up to the plate in the ninth with two outs and runners on first and second with the Giants down a run. With two strikes on him, Wisely reached out his bat and made contact on a changeup that found a hole up the middle and scored the tying run while moving the other runner over to third. The Giants wound up winning the game on a wild pitch the next at-bat. The Giants designated Nick Ahmed for assignment Tuesday after activating Thairo Estrada and Wilmer Flores from the injured list, allowing Wisely to slide in as the team's new starting shortstop, though he'll likely end up platooning with Tyler Fitzgerald against lefty pitching. For the year, Wisely is slashing .285/.319/.423 with three homers, 16 RBI, 15 runs and a 6:32 BB:K in 139 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Provides late home run

Fitzgerald went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, a walk and two runs scored in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays.

Fitzgerald's only hit of the night came at a crucial moment after he led off the eighth with a solo blast off Yusei Kikuchi to put the Giants within a run. Fitzgerald then worked a walk in the ninth before eventually scoring the winning run on a wild pitch to walk off the game. Though he's yet to carve out a full-time role, Fitzgerald has done well with his opportunities, slashing .278/.337/.430 with two homers, seven RBI, 14 runs, seven steals and a 6:28 BB:K in 86 plate appearances.

  • Mets' Francisco Lindor: Slugs 16th homer

Lindor went 3-for-4 with a walk, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Nationals.

The shortstop took Jake Irvin deep for a two-run shot in the sixth inning, giving the Mets a 6-0 lead that the bullpen couldn't quite squander. Lindor is up to 16 homers on the season, including three in the last eight games, and over his last 25 contests he's slashing .311/.379/.592 with 11 doubles, six long balls, seven steals, 17 RBI and 24 runs.

  • Rays' Wander Franco: Formally charged

Franco was formally charged Tuesday in the Dominican Republic with sexual abuse and sexual exploitation against a minor and human trafficking, Juan Arturo Recio of ESPN.com.do reports.

Prior to the start of the regular season, the Rays placed Franco on administrative leave and later extended his stay until Sunday, but his term will likely be extended indefinitely once again while the legal process plays out. If convicted on the sexual abuse and sexual exploitation charge, Franco could face 1-to-5 years in prison, while the human trafficking charge carries a maximum 20-year sentence.
