  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Activated and starting Wednesday

Ray (oblique) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Wednesday and will start against the Marlins.

Ray is possibly being rushed back, as he was originally scheduled to make one more rehab start but will start in Miami instead. He threw just 66 pitches in his most recent rehab start so may be on a limited pitch count, but the Diamondbacks needed to call on him anyway as Clay Buchholz hit the disabled list with an oblique injury. Alex Avila was placed on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring in a corresponding move.

  • Yu Darvish SP | SD

Cubs' Yu Darvish: Decision on next step coming Thursday

Darvish (triceps) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, after which the Cubs will determine if he's ready to rejoin the big club over the weekend or if he requires another minor-league start, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Darvish experienced no complications while playing light catch Tuesday, one day after he covered five innings in a rehab start for Low-A South Bend. While he was sharp in that outing, he only threw 57 pitches, so Darvish would likely have his workload restricted if he were to return from the 10-day disabled list to start Saturday or Sunday against the Twins. Once Darvish is added back to Chicago's rotation, one of Tyler Chatwood (paternity list) or Mike Montgomery will likely head to the bullpen.

  • Kyle Wright SP | CHC

Braves' Kyle Wright: Strikes out career-high 13 batters

Wright gave up four runs (three earned) over 5.2 innings and fanned a career-high 13 batters Tuesday for Double-A Mississippi in its 6-5 loss to Jacksonville.

The punchout total was one shy of the Mississippi record and beat Wright's previous best by five strikeouts. The right-hander now sports a strong 9.2 K/9 for the season, but his control could stand some improvement, as was evident Tuesday. He issued three free passes -- the third time in four starts he has allowed that many walks -- and uncorked a season-high three wild pitches in the outing. Fellow pitching prospects Luiz Gohara and Kolby Allard seem more likely to contribute for the Braves in the second half than Wright, who is trending toward a 2019 promotion to the big club.

  • Ranger Suarez SP | BOS

Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Earns promotion to Triple-A

Suarez was promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Suarez received the call to the International League after supplying a 2.76 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 75 innings for Double-A Reading. The 22-year-old lefty hasn't consistently displayed swing-and-miss stuff during his time in the minors and profiles mostly as a command and control artist. He hasn't posted higher than a 3.0 BB/9 or 0.5 HR/9 at any of his five stops in the Philadelphia system.

  • Ben Meyer SP | MIA

Marlins' Ben Meyer: Mops up in loss

Meyer worked four innings in long relief during the Marlins' 5-3 loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. He gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks and struck out two.

With Caleb Smith (shoulder) and Jose Urena (shoulder) both on the disabled list, the Marlins have two openings in their rotation for Friday and Saturday against the Mets. Meyer was considered a candidate to receive one of the starting assignments after being recalled from Triple-A New Orleans in a corresponding move for Smith, but that's likely now off the table following the right-hander's extended usage out of the bullpen Tuesday. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if Meyer were sent back to New Orleans in the near future in order for the Marlins to add a fresh arm to the staff.

  • Mike Soroka SP | ARI

Braves' Mike Soroka: Moved to 60-day DL

Soroka (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday.

Soroka received clean results from Friday's MRI, so this comes as a bit of a surprise. The 20-year-old complained of shoulder fatigue and a lack of arm speed during his last outing Tuesday against the Blue Jays -- just his second start back from a month-long stay on the disabled list. If his shoulder responds positively over the coming weeks, Soroka should be able to build his arm back up to speed by mid-to-late August. In a corresponding move, Wes Parsons joined the Braves' 40-man roster prior to Wednesday's game against the Reds.

  • Dodgers' Ross Stripling: Allows one in no-decision

Stripling allowed one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision.

Stripling allowed just a solo home run to Javier Baez with two outs in the fifth inning, but the floodgates open up after that against the bullpen in the eventual 9-4 loss. The five innings matched the fewest he's gone in his last nine starts, as he needed 86 pitches (58 strikes) to get to that point before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the home half of the frame. Though he struck out just four in this one, the 28-year-old finishes June with an absurd 30:1 K:BB and sits at 89:12 over 77.1 innings on the year. He'll carry a terrific 1.98 ERA into Sunday's home start against the Rockies.

  • Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Quality start in win

Martinez (4-4) earned the win Tuesday, striking out eight over six innings while allowing two runs on six hits and a walk against the Indians.

Martinez allowed a pair of runs in the first inning, then settled in after that to shut down the Cleveland offense the rest of the night. The 26-year-old had been struggling since returning from the disabled list at the beginning of the month, so this was an impressive rebound effort. He induced 17 swinging strikes and logged his first quality start in his last six outings. He'll take a 3.22 ERA into Monday's road start against the Diamondbacks.

  • Brewers' Freddy Peralta: Strikes out 10 in scoreless outing

Peralta (3-0) struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings against the Royals on Tuesday, allowing one hit and one walk en route to a win.

Peralta threw his second consecutive scoreless outing Tuesday, doing so on 102 pitches (70 strikes) while recording double-digit strikeouts for the second time in four starts. The young righty has allowed just seven hits in 22.2 innings while tallying 35 strikeouts against nine walks. He'll look to keep things going in a matchup with the Reds in Cincinnati in his next start.

  • Steven Matz RP | TB

Mets' Steven Matz: Solid in Tuesday's no-decision

Matz allowed three runs on six hits while striking out seven over seven innings in Tuesday's win over the Pirates. He did not factor into the decision.

Matz faced the minimum over the first four innings before allowing a pair of runs on four consecutive hits to begin the fifth inning. The Pirates tacked on another run with a Gregory Polanco solo shot in the seventh before Matz was lifted after throwing a season-high 110 pitches. The southpaw has now posted quality starts in four of his last five starts and currently owns a respectable 3.69 ERA on the season. His next start will come Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
