  • Zack Thompson RP | STL

Cardinals' Zack Thompson: Starting Wednesday at Triple-A

Thompson is scheduled to start for Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democratreports.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol named the left-hander as a candidate to start Saturday against the Cubs, but it appears he'll remain in the minor-league rotation. Thompson could still be an option for St. Louis if Wednesday's outing is a brief one, but the organization seems more likely to go in another direction at this point.

  • Adbert Alzolay RP | NYM

Cubs' Adbert Alzolay: Heading for second opinion

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday that Alzolay (forearm) will receive a second opinion on his flexor strain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

The right-hander landed on the injured list with a flexor strain last week, and news of a second opinion isn't an encouraging development. Alzolay remains without a clear timeline for his return and should be considered out indefinitely as he continues to be evaluated.

  • Yency Almonte RP | LAD

Cubs' Yency Almonte: Plays catch Tuesday

Almonte (shoulder) was seen playing catch Tuesday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Almonte has been dealing with a right shoulder strain but resumed throwing after being shut down for nearly two weeks. It's unclear if he'll need a rehab assignment before returning from the injured list, but the righty will likely be out for at least another week.

  • Cubs' Daniel Palencia: Starting rehab assignment

Palencia (shoulder) will begin his rehab assignment Tuesday at Triple-A Iowa, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Palencia was placed on the 15-day injured list May 7 with a shoulder strain and will make his first in-game appearance since sustaining the injury. It's unclear how many rehab appearances Palencia will need before being deemed ready to return.

  • Drew Smyly SP | CHC

Cubs' Drew Smyly: Making rehab start

Smyly (hip) will make a rehab start Tuesday with High-A South Bend, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Smyly is set for his first rehab appearance since suffering a pinched nerve in his right hip back in April. It's unclear how long of a rehab stint is required, but Smyly should be on pace to return in late May or early June.

  • Tobias Myers RP | NYM

Brewers' Tobias Myers: Recalled from Triple-A

The Brewers recalled Myers from Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday.

Myers is taking the roster spot vacated by Joe Ross (back) and is also a candidate to take Ross' place in the rotation, although it would appear he'll be available in relief for now. The right-hander holds a 5.29 ERA and 17:9 K:BB over 17 innings covering four starts with Milwaukee this season.

  • Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: Works in relief Monday

Hernandez gave up two earned runs on two hits over an inning of relief in Monday's 6-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

After being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Hernandez ended up starting in the Dodgers' series finale in San Francisco, covering six innings while giving up three earned runs in a losing effort. With an off day coming up Thursday, the Dodgers weren't in need of an additional starter this week, so Hernandez shifted to the bullpen. He'll likely work mostly in lower-leverage spots while he remains up with the Dodgers.

  • Padres' Logan Gillaspie: Goes back to El Paso

Gillaspie returned to Triple-A El Paso after serving as the Padres' 27th man for Monday's doubleheader.

Gillaspie pitched two scoreless innings during the twin bill but was sent right back to El Paso on Tuesday. In 14 appearances with El Paso, Gillaspie owns a 5.54 ERA and an 11:3 K:BB across 13.0 innings.

  • Emilio Pagan RP | CIN

Reds' Emilio Pagan: Playing catch Tuesday

Pagan (triceps) will attempt to play catch Tuesday after his MRI came back negative, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Pagan had to be lifted from an appearance against the Dodgers on Sunday, but it looks like he's avoided a serious injury. The Reds should have a better idea as to when he might be available out of the bullpen based on how Tuesday's catch session goes.

  • Ryder Ryan RP | LAD

Pirates' Ryder Ryan: Loses roster spot

The Pirates optioned Ryan to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Ryan has mostly been effective, holding a 3.46 ERA and 14:7 K:BB over 13 innings. He has been a bit wild lately, though, including in his last appearance when he walked a pair and allowed a run without recording an out. Ji Hwan Bae will absorb his roster spot.
