  • Jeff Hoffman RP | TOR

Reds' Jeff Hoffman: Gives up two runs

Hoffman came on in relief of Reiver Sanmartin during Friday's loss to Atlanta and gave up two runs over 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and a walk without striking out a batter.

Those two runs ultimately mattered, as a Reds rally in the ninth inning ended up one run short. At least Hoffman got some length in the game to save the back end of the bullpen, but he's in a role that provides little fantasy viability.

  • Reds' Reiver Sanmartin: Struggles with control

Sanmartin gave up five runs on four hits and five walks over 2.1 innings in Friday's loss to Atlanta. He struggled in the relatively cold weather to find a grip on the ball, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "It was the cold right there," Sanmartin said. "I couldn't really feel the ball. I have to keep working at it and move on."

Unlike many of the Reds' other young starters, Sanmartin doesn't throw especially hard and relies on typically good control to get by. When that's taken away, he's especially vulnerable, as was the case Friday night. He'll need to be a lot sharper in his next scheduled outing, a road start Thursday against the Dodgers.

  • Taylor Rogers RP | MIN

Padres' Taylor Rogers: Notches first save

Rodgers saved Friday's 3-0 shutout of the Diamondbacks, recording a 1-2-3 ninth inning with one strikeout.

Making his San Diego debut, the newly acquired Rogers made quick work of the top of Arizona's lineup to secure the Padres' first victory. This could be the first of many saves for the 30-year-old as San Diego stands to be one of the more competitive teams in the National League.

  • Sean Manaea RP | NYM

    Padres' Sean Manaea: Stellar debut

Manaea (1-0) got the win in Friday's 3-0 triumph over Arizona, spinning seven no-hit innings while allowing no runs with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Manaea was nearly flawless Friday, with a Daulton Varsho second-inning walk being the only knock on his ledger. Additionally, the lefty was efficient in requiring just 88 pitches, 66 for strikes, to navigate 21 outs. He'll look to keep the momentum going in San Francisco on Wednesday.

  • Edwin Diaz RP | LAD

Mets' Edwin Diaz: Heading to bereavement list

Diaz will be placed on the bereavement list by the Mets on Saturday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Diaz didn't appear in Friday's win over the Nationals, and he'll miss between three and seven games following the death of his grandfather. He'll reclaim his role as the Mets' closer once he rejoins the team, but Seth Lugo, Adam Ottavino and Trevor May are candidates for ninth-inning work during Diaz's absence.

  • Dodgers' Craig Kimbrel: Earns shaky save

Kimbrel allowed one run on two hits while striking out two batters Friday. He notched a save in the win over Colorado.

The newly acquired Kimbrel was immediately handed a save chance and converted it despite coughing up an RBI double to Charlie Blackmon. The Dodgers will use the 33-year-old as a traditional closer barring any extended troubles. Prior to him entering in the ninth, Brusdar Graterol, Daniel Hudson and Blake Treinen each tossed a scoreless frame. Kimbrel posted a 2.26 ERA with 24 saves and 100 strikeouts through 59.2 innings with the White Sox and the Cubs last season.

  • Camilo Doval RP | NYY

Giants' Camilo Doval: Blows first save chance

Doval gave up three runs on three hits in one inning during Friday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Marlins.

After Tyler Rogers had gotten the final two outs of the seventh inning and Jake McGee worked a scoreless eighth to protect a Giants lead, Doval got the call for the team's first save opportunity of the season. The young right-hander blew it in spectacular fashion, with Miami's rally being capped by a two-run blast from Jazz Chisholm, but San Francisco was able to tie it back up in the bottom of the ninth and win it in the 10th to take Doval off the hook for a loss. Manager Gabe Kapler suggested late in spring training that McGee would get most of the saves this season, and Friday's performance didn't do much for Doval's chances of changing that.

  • Anthony Bass RP | TOR

Marlins' Anthony Bass: Takes loss Friday

Bass (0-1) gave up a run on a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss Friday against the Giants.

Anthony Bender blew the save in the ninth inning, but Bass fared no better in the 10th, allowing the winning run to cross the plate on an Austin Slater walkoff double. Bass is in the late-inning mix for the Marlins, but after going 0-for-4 on save chances in 2021, he remains a risky play for anyone looking for help in that category.

  • Anthony Bender RP | MIA

Marlins' Anthony Bender: Blows first save chance

Bender struck out one and gave up a solo home run in an inning of work during Friday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Giants.

The Marlins put together a rally in the top of the ninth inning to take their first lead of the game and give Bender his first save opportunity of the season. Unfortunately, a Thairo Estrada solo shot sent the game to extras, and San Francisco pushed across the winning run in the 10th inning against Anthony Bass. Cole Sulser, another potential closing option for the Marlins, worked a scoreless seventh inning. Manager Don Mattingly seemed willing to give Bender a chance to establish himself prior to the season starting, but as he showed with Bass last year, he isn't afraid to make a quick switch in the ninth either.

  • Pirates' Duane Underwood: Heading to injured list

Underwood (hamstring) landed on the 10-day injured list Friday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Underwood (hamstring) left Thursday's season opener against the Cardinals with hamstring discomfort, an issue evidently serious enough to keep him out for at least 10 days. Roansy Contreras was called up to take his place on the roster.
