  • Padres' Nick Martinez: Walks five in loss

Martinez (0-2) took the loss during Friday's 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing two runs on four hits and five walks with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Martinez was able to keep Los Angeles off the board early despite traffic on the bases but was done in by two solo homers in the fifth inning, which prompted his removal. After pitching well in his first start of the season, the 31-year-old has now surrendered six runs in 9.2 innings with nine walks over his last two starts. He'll look to rebound against Cincinnati on Thursday.

  • David Bednar RP | NYY

Pirates' David Bednar: Works setup role

Bednar allowed one hit but struck out three across a scoreless inning to earn a hold Friday against the Cubs.

Bednar entered the game in the eighth inning with a 4-2 lead. He surrendered a leadoff hit, but he struck out the next three batters he faced. Bednar has made consecutive appearances pitching in high-leverage situations, rather than in the ninth inning to collect a save. As the team's best reliever, that usage makes sense. However, it also means that Chris Stratton is likely to pick up saves on occasions when Bednar is used earlier in the game.

  • Ryan Helsley RP | BAL

Cardinals' Ryan Helsley: Dominant in high-leverage role

Helsley has yet to allow a run across 5.1 innings this season.

Helsley hasn't been giving much up at all -- he's yielded just one hit with no walks while dialing up 11 strikeouts. He threw 1.1 perfect innings to earn his third hold of the year Friday versus the Reds. The 27-year-old should continue to see plenty of high-leverage opportunities, though Giovanny Gallegos has done well as the closer so far, so Helsley's usage is likely to come before the ninth inning in most games.

  • Nick Wittgren RP | SEA

Cardinals' Nick Wittgren: Picks up third hold

Wittgren walked one batter in a scoreless inning to earn a hold in Friday's 4-2 win over the Reds.

Wittgren has picked up three holds through six appearances this season. The right-hander has been effective in limited time, as he's only covered a full inning in three of his outings. He's yielded one run, five hits and two walks while striking out two in 4.1 innings. Wittgren amassed 31 holds over the last three years with Cleveland, and he appears to be reprising a similar role as part of the high-leverage bridge to closer Giovanny Gallegos.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Allows run in fourth save

Gallegos earned the save Saturday against the Reds after giving up a run on two hits during the ninth inning. He didn't strike out or walk a batter.

The 30-year-old surrendered his first run of the season on a single, a double and a wild pitch, but he fortunately entered with a three-run cushion and still finished out the save. Its Gallegos' fourth save in as many chances this season, and he's given up one run on four hits with a 5:2 K:BB across 6.1 innings.

  • Sam Long RP | KC

Giants' Sam Long: Strong outing as opener

Long fired two scoreless innings in Friday's win over Washington. He allowed two hits and struck out one batter.

Long coughed up two hits in the first inning but escaped the jam without allowing a run. The 6-foot-1 lefty has yet to give up a run this season while posting a 4:1 K:BB through 4.2 frames. He's currently lined up to take the mound at home against Oakland next week where he'll likely go deeper into the contest.

  • Jake Junis RP | TEX

Giants' Jakob Junis: Fires five shutout innings

Junis (1-0) allowed three hits over five scoreless innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over Washington.

Junis was promoted from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday and made his Giants debut out of the bullpen in Friday's victory. He allowed just one extra-base hit and was never in much danger during the dominant outing. Due to several injuries to the Giants' starting pitching group, Junis will likely stick around on the MLB roster and could find himself in the starting rotation next week.

  • Raymond Kerr RP | ATL

Padres' Ray Kerr: Called up from Triple-A

Kerr was called up from Triple-A El Paso on Friday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

The 27-year-old was acquired by the Padres in November and missed out on the Opening Day roster, but he'll join the big-league club Friday with Pierce Johnson (elbow) landing on the injured list. Kerr split the 2021 campaign between the Double-A and Triple-A levels, and he had a combined 3.18 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 60:16 K:BB across 39.2 innings.

  • Pierce Johnson RP | CIN

Padres' Pierce Johnson: Heading to injured list

Johnson was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with right elbow tendinitis, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Johnson has recorded five holds with a 4.50 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB over six innings this season, but he's now sidelined by an elbow injury. Ray Kerr was promoted from Triple-A El Paso to replace him in San Diego's bullpen.

  • Dylan Floro RP | ARI

Marlins' Dylan Floro: Cleared for rehab assignment

Floro (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment at Low-A Jupiter on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Floro threw 16 pitches in a simulated game Sunday, and he'll be cleared for game action in the minors less than a week later. It's not yet clear how many rehab appearances he'll make, but the minor-league outings should be the final step in his recovery process. The right-hander was viewed as a closing candidate prior to sustaining his shoulder injury, but the Marlins could ease him into action as a setup man once he's able to rejoin the major-league club.
