Alexis Diaz RP | TEX
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Bags save in come-from-behind win
Diaz claimed a save in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday in the Reds' 4-3 win over the Yankees. He issued a walk and recorded a strikeout in the 13-pitch appearance.
Though Hunter Strickland was available after he hadn't worked since Saturday, he was bypassed for the save chance after squandering his most recent chance June 6. Manager David Bell instead turned to Diaz, who retired three of the four batters he faced to close out the come-from-behind win after the Reds plated four of their runs in the top of the ninth. While Diaz possesses the best skills of any pitcher in the Cincinnati bullpen, Bell's reluctance to commit to a full-time closer since Raisel Iglesias was traded to the Angels following the 2020 season suggests that Diaz and Strickland may continue to share the ninth-inning role.

Freddy Tarnok RP | MIA
Braves' Freddy Tarnok: Impresses in Triple-A debut
Tarnok struck out four over six innings and allowed one run on two hits and a walk in his Triple-A Gwinnett debut Wednesday after he was promoted from Double-A Mississippi last Friday.
Tarnok earned the bump up to Triple-A after he overcame a brief rough patch in late May and early June to deliver a 1.90 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 37:9 K:BB across 23.2 innings in his final six outings with Mississippi. The 23-year-old right-hander is one of Atlanta's top high-level pitching prospects, but a 2022 MLB debut likely won't be in the forecast unless he pushes the door down at Gwinnett and if the big club's starting pitching depth is tested by injuries.

Jordan Hicks RP | CHW
Cardinals' Jordan Hicks: Wild in first turn as opener
Hicks allowed a hit and three walks with one strikeout in 1.2 innings as the opener in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Dodgers. He did not factor in the decision.
Hicks has seen time as a starter and a middle reliever so far, but Tuesday was his first turn as an opener. While he kept runs off the board, he threw only 18 of 38 pitches for strikes in an erratic outing. Hicks has pitched 6.2 scoreless innings since returning from a forearm strain in early July. He has a 4.08 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 34:24 K:BB across 35.1 innings in 14 outings (eight starts) overall, though his usage is likely to remain flexible.

Connor Sadzeck RP | MIN
Brewers' Connor Sadzeck: Returns to majors with Milwaukee
The Brewers selected Sadzeck's contract from Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday.
Sadzeck is back in the majors for the first time since 2019, when he made 20 relief appearances for Seattle. Prior to Wednesday's call-up, the 30-year-old right-hander had spent the entire 2022 campaign with Nashville. Over 28 innings with the affiliate, Sadzeck turned in an 0.96 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 35:12 K:BB. He'll likely see most of his initial opportunities with Milwaukee in lower-leverage spots.

Daniel Castano RP | MIA
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Gets little help in loss
Castano (1-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Marlins fell 3-2 to the Pirates, giving up three runs on five hits over five innings. He struck out three without walking a batter.
It wasn't a bad outing for the southpaw, but Miami's offense couldn't get much going even though Pittsburgh was stuck using a bullpen day. Castano did serve up a homer for the fifth straight start however, a stretch in which he has a 5.55 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB through 24.1 innings.

David Bednar RP | NYY
Pirates' David Bednar: Nails down 16th save
Bednar gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his 16th save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Marlins.
The 27-year-old closer has looked a little vulnerable lately, giving up runs in four of his last 10 appearances with a 6.97 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB through 10.1 innings over that stretch, but Bednar didn't falter Tuesday. Barring a deadline trade to a contender, he figures to remain in the ninth-inning job in Pittsburgh down the stretch, even with some occasional lapses.

John Brebbia RP | COL
Giants' John Brebbia: Gets start in bullpen day
Brebbia is scheduled to serve as the Giants' opening pitcher in a bullpen game Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Brebbia hasn't covered more than two innings or thrown more than 29 pitches in any of his 40 appearances this season, so he's unlikely to make it even once through the order before being pulled from the contest. The Giants haven't indicated that they'll deploy a primary pitcher behind Brebbia, but Sam Long is the most obvious candidate to cover multiple innings out of the bullpen if needed.

Kenley Jansen RP | DET
Braves' Kenley Jansen: Makes return from IL
Atlanta reinstated Jansen (chest) from the 15-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's series finale with the Mets.
Fellow reliever Darren O'Day (calf) was moved to the IL to clear space on the 26-man active roster for Jansen, who had been on the shelf since June 28 after experiencing an irregular heartbeat. The cardiac issue has popped up at various points during Jansen's career, but doctors cleared him to continue throwing during his recent stint on the IL. According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, manager Brian Snitker said Atlanta initially planned to activate Jansen on Tuesday when he was first eligible, but the team had to wait an additional day to make the move because Jansen had to use blood thinners for 15 days to treat the irregular heartbeat. Since he wasn't shut down from throwing while he was sidelined, Jansen will likely step back into the closer's role right away, resulting in A.J. Minter and Will Smith losing fantasy value as their transition into full-time setup roles.

Cory Abbott RP | SEA
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Joins big club for doubleheader
The Nationals recalled Abbott from Triple-A Rochester to have him serve as their 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Mariners, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Abbott is up with the Nationals for the second time this season and will be available for both ends of the twin bill before heading back to Rochester on Thursday. His lone appearance with the big club came back on June 19, when he struck out a batter in a scoreless inning of relief against the Phillies.

Nick Martinez SP | TB
Padres' Nick Martinez: Struck by comebacker
Martinez was removed from Tuesday's loss to the Rockies after being struck in the right foot by a line drive, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Martinez allowed an unearned run on one hit with a strikeout and zero walks over one inning before being struck with the comebacker during the seventh inning. The right-hander should be considered day-to-day since the specifics of the injury remain unclear.
