  • Sam Long RP | KC

Giants' Sam Long: Sent to minors

Long was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.

Long has primarily pitched in relief for the Giants this year with 22 of his 28 outings coming out of the bullpen, and he's pitched well overall with a 3.61 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 33:14 K:BB across 42.1 innings. The left-hander will now join Sacramento to get stretched out as a starter after the Giants traded away Matthew Boyd, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

  • Andre Pallante SP | STL

Cardinals' Andre Pallante: Moving to bullpen

Pallante will move to the bullpen after the Cardinals acquired Jordan Montgomery and Jose Quintana on Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Pallante had his best start of the season Sunday against the Nationals, striking out eight in eight scoreless innings. However, the team thinks he profiles well as a reliever, and his move to the bullpen will allow the Cardinals to monitor his workload down the stretch. Over 28 appearances (10 starts) this year, the right-hander has posted a 3.18 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 82 innings.

  • Jay Jackson RP | MIN

Braves' Jay Jackson: Dispatched to minors

Atlanta optioned Jackson to Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday.

Jackson's stay on the 26-man active roster lasted less than 24 hours, as he was sent back to Gwinnett immediately after he was recalled ahead of Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Phillies. He went unused out of the bullpen in the loss and is still waiting to make his 2022 debut with Atlanta.

  • David Bednar RP | NYY

Pirates' David Bednar: Shelved with back inflammation

The Pirates placed Bednar on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with low-back inflammation.

Bednar's back injury cropped up earlier this week and left him unavailable for a save chance in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Brewers. Wil Crowe worked around a hit and struck out the side to notch his third save of the season, and he likely projects as manager Derek Shelton's preferred choice to close games while Bednar is on the shelf. Bednar will be eligible to return from the IL in mid-August.

  • Yohan Ramirez RP | PIT

Pirates' Yohan Ramirez: Recalled by Bucs

Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Ramirez was traded from the Guardians to the Pirates in early July, and he'll join Pittsburgh's active roster just under a month later. He's made eight relief appearances between Seattle and Cleveland this year and has posted a 6.97 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 10.1 innings.

  • Brewers' Peter Strzelecki: Sent down to minors

Strzelecki was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Strzelecki spent a week in the major-league bullpen and struck out three in two scoreless innings over a pair of relief appearances. However, he'll head back to the minors after the Brewers acquired Matt Bush on Tuesday.

  • Dinelson Lamet RP | LAD

Brewers' Dinelson Lamet: DFA'd after acquisition

The Brewers designated Lamet for assignment Wednesday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

One of four players the Brewers received in return for closer Josh Hader in Monday's deal with the Padres, Lamet will be moved off the 40-man roster without having ever appeared for Milwaukee. According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, general manager David Stearns said that while the Brewers liked Lamet's live arm and strong prior track record of experience at the MLB level, finding a spot for him in the bullpen became too challenging in the wake of Tuesday's trade deadline. Lamet is under contract for $4.78 million in 2022, so the Brewers are hoping that salary may be enough to deter another team from claiming the right-hander off waivers, which would allow him to remain in the farm system at Triple-A Nashville.

  • Trevor May RP | ATH

Mets' Trevor May: Reinstated from injured list

May (triceps) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander was sidelined since early May due to a stress reaction on the lower portion of his humerus but began a rehab assignment in late July. He posted a 4.50 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in four innings over four rehab appearances and will rejoin the Mets' bullpen ahead of Wednesday's series finale in Washington.

  • Tanner Rainey RP | DET

Nationals' Tanner Rainey: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Rainey underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Rainey was expected to miss the remainder of the season after he was placed on the 60-day injured list in mid-July, and he's slated to be sidelined until at least August 2023 following Wednesday's procedure. Kyle Finnegan has taken over as Washington's closer while Rainey has been unavailable.

  • Tyler Gilbert RP | CHW

Diamondbacks' Tyler Gilbert: Shifts to 60-day IL

Gilbert (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

Gilbert landed on the injured list last week due to a left elbow sprain, and he'll be unavailable until at least late September after being transferred to the 60-day IL. It's not yet clear whether the Diamondbacks expect him to return prior to the end of the regular season, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him held out for the remainder of the year since Arizona isn't in playoff contention. Tommy Henry's contract was selected Wednesday, and the promising prospect will take Gilbert's place in the rotation.
