  • Diamondbacks' Emmanuel Rivera: Recalled from Reno

    The Diamondbacks recalled Rivera from Triple-A Reno on Friday.

    Rivera was optioned to Reno on Aug. 12, and he has since slashed .304/.418/.609 with three homers and eight RBI across 55 plate appearances. He'll rejoin Arizona as rosters expand to 28 players and could split time at third base with Jace Peterson. Buddy Kennedy was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

    Peterson is not in the lineup Friday against the Orioles.

    Evan Longoria will get the start at third base and hit fifth as left-hander Cole Irvin graces the bump for Baltimore. Peterson has batted just .167 with a .407 OPS in 55 plate appearances versus lefties this year.

    Cubs' Nick Madrigal: Sitting for nightcap

    Madrigal is not in the starting lineup for the second game of Friday's doubleheader with the Reds.

    Madrigal will take a seat after he went 1-for-3 with a walk in Chicago's 6-2 victory during the matinee. Jeimer Candelario will slot in at third base while Christopher Morel handles designated hitter duties and bats ninth in the nightcap.

  • Nationals' Ildemaro Vargas: Sits again Friday

    Vargas isn't in the Nationals' lineup Friday against the Marlins, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

    Vargas will take a seat for the second straight game Friday after being an everyday part of the Nats' lineup for most of August. Jake Alu will fill in at second base, allowing Travis Blankenhorn to start in left field.

    Mets' Brett Baty: Officially back in big leagues

    Baty was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday.

    Baty slashed .246/.329/.493 with five home runs in 17 games with Syracuse after being sent down last month. The 23-year-old has posted a .212/.284/.332 line to this point at the major-league level but should see regular playing time at third base -- at least against right-handed pitching -- down the stretch. Baty is at the hot corner and batting eighth Friday against the Mariners.

    Marlins' Jake Burger: Slugs 28th homer

    Burger 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Thursday's win over the Nationals.

    The 27-year-old slugger capped the scoring on the night by launching a Joe La Sorsa sinker over the wall in right-center field in the ninth inning. Burger's up to 28 homers on the season, and while Thursday's blast was only his third in 26 games since joining the Marlins, he boasts a .323/.380/.485 slash line with his new club.

    Dodgers' Michael Busch: Goes deep in loss

    Busch went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Thursday in a loss to Atlanta.

    Busch hit one of four Dodgers long balls in the contest, launching his to right field in the seventh inning. It was his second homer since being recalled from the minors Aug. 22, but just his third hit. Busch has struggled since the promotion, slashing .130/.192/.391 with eight strikeouts over 26 plate appearances.

    Dodgers' Max Muncy: Extends historic XBH streak

    Muncy went 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in a loss to Atlanta on Thursday.

    Muncy gave the Dodgers an early lead with an RBI fielder's choice in the first inning and added a solo shot to bring the team to within one run in the eighth. That homer gave the veteran slugger an extra-base hit in nine straight games, tying a franchise record. Muncy has hit safely in 10 consecutive contests overall, slashing .341/.413/.707 with three homers, six doubles, 13 RBI and eight runs over that stretch.

    Braves' Austin Riley: Goes deep in victory

    Riley went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Thursday's 8-7 win against the Dodgers.

    Riley accounted for the final run in a six-run second inning for Atlanta with his solo shot to center field. The long ball was his third over his past six contests to bring his total to 32 on the campaign. Riley finished August with four consecutive multi-hit games and slashed .289/.348/.537 with eight homers, 18 RBI, 23 runs and one steal over 29 contests during the month.

  • Nationals' Ildemaro Vargas: Takes seat Thursday

    Vargas isn't in the Nationals' lineup Thursday against Miami, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

    Although Vargas is slashing .268/.294/.476 against left-handed pitchers this season, he'll retreat to the bench against Braxton Garrett and the Marlins on Thursday. Michael Chavis will fill in at the keystone and bat seventh.
