  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Idle again Wednesday

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Ortiz will be on the bench for a second straight game while the Brewers once again go with Luis Rengifo and David Hamilton as their starters on the left side of the infield. Neither Ortiz (57 wRC+), Rengifo (52 wRC+) nor Hamilton (73 wRC+) have been productive at the plate this season, so manager Pat Murphy could continue to mix and match at third base and shortstop rather than committing to any of the three in an everyday role.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Hitting bench Tuesday

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals. Though he'll head to the bench Tuesday, Ortiz may have recaptured a regular role on the left side of the Milwaukee infield. He occupied shortstop in each of the last five games, going just 2-for-14 but drawing four walks during that stretch. Ortiz will take a seat in favor of Luis Rengifo, who will enter the starting nine at third base while David Hamilton slides over to shortstop.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Settling back into everyday role

Ortiz will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Dodgers. Dating back to May 12, Ortiz has produced a .798 OPS on the back of a stellar 25 percent walk rate. His improved production at the dish has allowed him to reclaim a regular spot on the left side of the infield, as he'll draw a fourth consecutive start Sunday. Luis Rengifo is on the bench for the third time in four games and appears to have fallen into a utility role.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Goes deep Tuesday

Ortiz went 2-for-3 with a home run and an additional RBI in Tuesday's 6-4 victory versus the Padres. Ortiz opened the scoring in the contest with a solo homer in the third inning. The infielder added an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Ortiz badly needed this positive performance, as he entered Tuesday with no long balls and a .181 batting average through 94 plate appearances on the season. He's seen his playing time fluctuate but has started four of the Brewers' past five contests.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Role diminishing

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. After starting at shortstop in 14 of Milwaukee's first 18 games of the season, Ortiz is on the bench Sunday for the fifth time in the past nine contests. David Hamilton has seen more action at shortstop as a result, creating more opportunities at third base for Luis Rengifo. Ortiz had a .593 OPS in 149 regular-season games last year and has a .180/.265/.180 slash line through 70 plate appearances this season, and that lack of offensive production is affecting his playing time.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Sitting down Friday

Ortiz isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates. Ortiz will get a day to rest after snapping his six-game hitless streak with his single against the Tigers on Thursday. David Hamilton will start at shortstop Friday while Luis Rengifo mans the hot corner.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Absent from lineup

Ortiz is not in the Brewers' starting lineup against the Nationals on Friday. The Brewers will start David Hamilton and Luis Rengifo at shortstop and third base, respectively, for Friday's series opener. Through five games in April, Oritz has gone 3-for-19 (.158) with one steal, two runs scored and five strikeouts.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Idle to begin doubleheader

Ortiz isn't in the lineup for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Royals. Ortiz has gone 6-for-18 with three RBI, five runs scored and two steals through his first five games, but the Brewers will keep him in the dugout to begin the first game of Saturday's schedule. David Hamilton will slide to shortstop as a result while Luis Rengifo starts at the hot corner, batting second.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Off to fast start

Ortiz went 7-for-14 (.500) with a double, two RBI, two steals and a 2:3 BB:K over his last five spring games. Ortiz posted a 1.145 OPS during the 2025 exhibition campaign before putting up a .593 mark during the regular season, so the early hot streak is not necessarily a sign of things to come. However, it is certainly better than the alternative for a player looking to get back on track. Despite the downturn, Ortiz is in line to remain the primary shortstop for the Brewers, but Milwaukee's top four prospects all play the same position, so it will be a pivotal 2026 campaign for Ortiz.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Sitting down Wednesday

Ortiz isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels. Ortiz will receive a day off Wednesday after going 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Tuesday's series opener. Andruw Monasterio will replace him at shortstop and bat ninth.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Not in Sunday's lineup

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Cardinals. Ortiz started the past 11 games after coming off the injured list to begin September, but he'll hit the bench Sunday after posting a .206/.229/.206 slash line during that span. Andruw Monasterio will take over at shortstop after delivering a walk-off single Saturday.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Playing Wednesday after all

Ortiz (knee) is starting at shortstop and batting ninth against the Cubs on Wednesday. Ortiz was originally slated to miss Wednesday's contest after fouling a pitch off his knee during Tuesday's game against the Cubs, but the issue is apparently minor given his presence in the lineup. Ortiz has logged at least two hits in five of his last 10 games, going 13-for-35 (.371) with one steal, two doubles and six RBI over that span.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Scores twice, drives in run in win

Ortiz went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs and an RBI in Saturday's 17-7 win over the Phillies. Ortiz's sixth-inning base hit snapped an 0-for-14 skid at the plate that dated back to Monday. While the 26-year-old has started in each of the last seven games and may not be in imminent danger of losing out on an everyday role in the middle infield, he's nonetheless been a major disappointment for fantasy managers who were expecting him to take a leap forward in his second full season in the big leagues. Ortiz is slashing just .179/.246/.240 on the season, with his .486 OPS placing him last in the majors among all players who have logged at least 150 plate appearances.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Not in lineup Friday

Ortiz isn't part of Milwaukee's starting lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates. Ortiz will give way to Andruw Monasterio at shortstop for the fourth time in 11 games. Ortiz has struggled at the plate in 2025, slashing .173/.228/.237 with a pair of homers in 170 plate appearances.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: On bench again Wednesday

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. Andruw Monasterio will step in at shortstop while Ortiz takes a seat for the second time in three games, with both absences coming against right-handed pitching. Manager Pat Murphy hasn't confirmed a changing of the guard at shortstop, but it's clear that Ortiz has lost job security after struggling to a .173/.228/.223 slash line through the Brewers' first 43 games of the season.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Absent from Monday's lineup

Ortiz is not in the Brewers' starting lineup against the Guardians on Monday. Ortiz will begin Monday's series opener in the dugout while Andruw Monasterio starts at shortstop and bats eighth. Ortiz has struggled at the plate this season and has gone 4-for-32 with a solo home run since the beginning of May.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Ortiz is not in the Brewers' starting lineup against the Giants on Tuesday. Ortiz will take a seat after going 1-for-18 with two runs scored over his last five games. Vinny Capra will start at shortstop and bat seventh against Giants right-hander Jordan Hicks.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Will open season at shortstop

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Tuesday that Ortiz will open the season as the team's primary shortstop, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The Brewers were considering sliding Brice Turang over to shortstop and putting Ortiz at second base, but Turang's sore shoulder ended that conversation. Ortiz will enter the season with only third-base eligibility if your platform uses a 20-game threshold, but he will pick up shortstop eligibility soon.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: On fire in March

Ortiz went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBI in Monday's Cactus League game against the Mariners. Ortiz went just 1-for-10 in the four spring games he appeared in last month, but he has gotten hot since the calendar flipped to March, going 7-for-13 (.538) with four extra-base hits and three steals. The Brewers have not yet decided whether Ortiz or Brice Turang will be the primary shortstop, but expect Ortiz to see regular action one way or another.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Drives in three Saturday

Ortiz went 1-for-3 with a walk, three RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 6-0 win over the Mets. Ortiz plated the Brewers' first two runs with a single in the fourth inning before drawing a bases-loaded walk in the eighth. The infielder has had a decent September, batting .256 (21-for-82) with 10 extra-base hits, 15 RBI and four steals over 25 contests. He's been the Brewers' main third baseman in 2024, posting a .240/.331/.400 slash line with 11 steals, 11 home runs, 60 RBI and 58 runs scored across 141 games.
