  • Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Sitting following root canal

Rodgers isn't starting Thursday against Atlanta after he underwent a root canal, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Ryan McMahon is starting at second base Thursday, and Rodgers' absence from the lineup apparently stems from his dental procedure. Manager Bud Black said before the game that the team will try to avoid using Rodgers on Thursday, but he'll hit in the cage in case he's needed at some point. The 26-year-old is expected to return to the lineup Friday.

  • David Villar 1B | SF

Giants' David Villar: Rejoins big club

Villar was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday.

Villar was sent down by the Giants in early August but will return to the majors Thursday with rosters expanding to 28 players. The 25-year-old has played in 23 big-league games this season and has a .175/.338/.286 slash line with one home run, seven RBI and eight runs scored.

  • Alan Trejo SS | COL

    Rockies' Alan Trejo: Recalled Thursday

Trejo was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday.

Trejo spent the last month in the minors and slashed .358/.382/.741 with eight home runs, 21 RBI and 14 runs over 20 games after being demoted to Triple-A in early August. However, he'll provide infield depth for the big-league club now that active rosters have expanded to 28 players.

  • Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Day off Thursday

Rodgers isn't in the lineup Thursday against Atlanta.

Rodgers is getting a rare day off after he went just 2-for-17 with a triple, a run and five strikeouts over the last four games. Ryan McMahon will take over at second base and lead off Thursday.

  • Miguel Vargas 2B | CHW

    Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Promotion official

Los Angeles recalled Vargas from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday.

The Dodgers' top hitting prospect won't have a clear path to an everyday role as he rejoins the big club, but expect manager Dave Roberts to find room for Vargas in the lineup at least a couple times a week while veteran players like Justin Turner, Max Muncy and Chris Taylor receive occasional maintenance days over the final month of the season. Vargas logged eight plate appearances with the Dodgers earlier this summer, but he's otherwise spent the entire 2022 campaign at Oklahoma City, where he turned in a .915 OPS while chipping in 16 steals over 113 games.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Reaches base five times in loss

India went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three walks in Wednesday's extra-inning loss to the Cardinals.

India notched an RBI single off Jose Quintana in the bottom of the third inning, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead. He also added another single and three walks later in the contest. India extended his hit streak to 14 consecutive games Wednesday, batting .333 with a five extra-base hits, five RBI and 11 runs over that stretch.

  • Luis Guillorme 3B | HOU

Mets' Luis Guillorme: Nearing rehab assignment

Guillorme (groin) could begin a rehab assignment as early as Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Guillorme carried a three-week return timetable after landing on the injured list with a left groin strain Aug. 15, and he seems to be on track in his recovery process since he's closing in on a rehab assignment. Assuming he joins a minor-league affiliate Sunday, it wouldn't be surprising to see him rejoin the Mets sometime the following weekend.

  • Bryson Stott 2B | PHI

Phillies' Bryson Stott: Not starting Wednesday

Stott is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game at Arizona, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Stott started the past seven games and will head to the bench Wednesday after going 4-for-24 with two doubles, an RBI, two runs and a stolen base during that stretch. Edmundo Sosa will take over at shortstop and bat ninth in the series finale.

  • Josh Rojas 3B | CHW

Diamondbacks' Josh Rojas: On bench Wednesday

Rojas isn't starting Wednesday against the Phillies.

Rojas went 1-for-11 with a run, two walks and four strikeouts over the last three games and will get a rare day off Wednesday. Emmanuel Rivera is starting at the hot corner and batting third.

  • Nolan Gorman 2B | STL

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Remains out of lineup

Gorman isn't starting Wednesday against Cincinnati, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Gorman is out of the lineup for a third consecutive game. He's in the midst of a slump at the plate in which he's hit just .138 with a double, four runs, an RBI, three walks and 11 strikeouts over his last nine games. Albert Pujols will serve as the designated hitter and bat fifth.
