  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Reworking swing away from games

Gorman has yet to play in any games since being optioned last week, instead reporting to the Cardinals' spring training complex in Florida to rework his swing, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Gorman has slashed just .194/.279/.318 with a 32.3 percent strikeout rate this season, and he was in a 3-for-50 slump at the time of his demotion. The 26-year-old relocated to Florida at the start of the week and on Wednesday began working with hitting director Dalton Hurd and minor-league hitting coordinator Brock Hammit. Gorman's primary goal, according to president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, is to "get his swing to a less steep place." As part of their player development overhaul, the Cardinals opened a revamped training facility this year in Florida, and Bloom believes "this is the most-equipped we've been as a staff and programs and facilities to be able to do something like this." Once the team feels he's ready, Gorman will eventually be assigned to Triple-A Memphis to test out his progress in games. Blaze Jordan has taken over as the Cardinals' everyday third baseman since Gorman's demotion and has played well, slashing .300/.323/.533 with one home run and seven RBI in eight games.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Optioned following extended slump

The Cardinals optioned Gorman to Triple-A Memphis on Friday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Gorman is slashing a feeble .194/.279/.318 with a 32.3 percent strikeout rate this season, and he's gone 3-for-50 with a 5:27 BB:K over his last 17 contests. The 26-year-old will attempt to get his swing right at Memphis, but Gorman's days as a regular in St. Louis might be over.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Heading to bench Wednesday

Gorman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets. Gorman reached base on a pair of walks in Tuesday's 7-0 win in the series opener, but he remains stuck in prolonged dry spell at the dish. Dating back to May 20, Gorman has gone just 3-for-47 (.064 average) with one extra-base hit (a solo home run) while striking out at a 48.1 percent clip. The Cardinals will continue to shield Gorman from left-handed pitching, and he could be at risk of falling into more of a part-time role versus right-handers if he's unable to get his bat going soon.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Snaps slump with homer Tuesday

Gorman went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 7-4 loss against the Rangers. Gorman provided St. Louis with a spark in the fourth inning, taking Nathan Eovaldi deep for his seventh homer of the season. The blast came at a much-needed time for the infielder, who has been in a brutal slump over the previous few weeks, batting just 2-for-33 (.061) without an RBI while carrying a staggering 52.8 percent strikeout rate during that stretch. Gorman is now slashing .209/.291/.342 with four doubles, 26 RBI and 18 runs scored across 213 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Sitting against left-hander

Gorman is out of the lineup for Friday's series opener against the Cubs, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. St. Louis will leave Gorman out of Friday's lineup against lefty Shota Imanaga. Thomas Saggese will take over at third base for Gorman and hit eighth in the batting order.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Idle against lefty

Gorman is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Brewers. The Cardinals will give the left-handed-hitting Gorman a breather while southpaw Kyle Harrison toes the rubber for Milwaukee. Gorman will be replaced at third base by Jose Fermin, who will bat fifth.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Receiving Sunday off

Gorman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers. With southpaw Justin Wrobleski on the bump for the Dodgers, the left-handed hitter will move to the bench. Ramon Urias will cover third base in place of Gorman, who went 1-for-8 with a two-run home run over the first two contests in the series.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Logs three RBI vs. Pittsburgh

Gorman went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two additional RBI during the Cardinals' 11-7 win over the Pirates on Tuesday. Gorman opened Tuesday's scoring with a solo home run off of Braxton Ashcraft in the second inning, and the former added two more RBI on sacrifice flies in both the fifth and seventh frames. Over his last seven games, Gorman has gone 7-for-25 (.280) with one home run, four RBI and three runs scored.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Swats three-run homer Friday

Gorman went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Friday's 9-4 win over the Astros. After striking out in each of his first three at-bats Friday, Gorman turned on a 96-mph fastball from Bryan Abreu and sent it over the right-field wall for a three-run shot to open the Cardinals' lead to 7-3 in the top of the seventh inning. An all-or-nothing type at the plate, Gorman's unlikely to hit for average or get on base at a high clip. He's slashing .207/.284/.362 with three home runs, 12 RBI, seven runs scored and a 7:22 BB:K across 67 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Goes deep again Monday

Gorman went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's loss against the Mets. Gorman stayed locked in at the plate, delivering another display of power by homering for the second time in as many days and recording an RBI in his fourth consecutive game. His 419-foot solo shot off Clay Holmes was pulled to right field and briefly cut into the deficit. The 25-year-old has failed to reach 20 home runs in each of the past two seasons after recording 27 in 2023, but his hot start suggests he could be trending back toward that mark this season.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Heating up in Grapefruit League

Gorman went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's Grapefruit League contest versus the Marlins. Gorman led off the top of the fourth inning with a blast off of Ryan Gusto. It's the third home run this spring for Gorman, who has reached base five times in his last two contests. Perhaps most encouragingly, he's also sporting a 4:5 BB:K. Gorman is set to be the Cardinals' primary third baseman this season and offers big power potential, albeit with lots of batting average risk.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Swats first spring training homer

Gorman cranked a three-run home run in Wednesday's Grapefruit League tilt versus the Mets. Gorman took Jonah Tong deep to the opposite field in the third inning in what was his only hit in three trips to the dish. The 25-year-old got the start at third base in the contest, and that's the position he's expected to man on Opening Day for a rebuilding Cardinals club.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Should still win third base job

Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said Saturday after the signing of Ramon Urias that the roster addition wouldn't "get in the way, substantively, for the opportunities for (Gorman)," Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The 25-year-old infielder is in line to be the team's primary third baseman in 2026, and that won't change even after Urias was brought aboard. Urias does offer a short-side platoon partner for the lefty-swinging Gorman and is also a superior defender, so he'll get reps versus lefties and could handle third base while Gorman is used at designated hitter. Gorman is looking to bounce back from a two-year drought at the plate, having slashed just .204/.284/.385 with a 35.7 percent strikeout rate over that stretch.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Will get 'plenty of opportunity'

Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said Tuesday that Gorman "should have plenty of opportunity this year," Brandon Kiley of 101 ESPN St. Louis reports. Bloom didn't explicitly say it, but the expectation is that Gorman will take over as the team's primary third baseman in 2026 for the departed Nolan Arenado. After a mini-breakout in 2023 that saw him crank 27 home runs, Gorman has slashed just .204/.284/.385 with a 35.7 percent strikeout rate over the last two seasons. He's still just 25, however, and the rebuilding Cardinals aren't ready to give up on his power potential.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Avoids arbitration with Cardinals

The Cardinals and Gorman avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.655 million contract Thursday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. It was Gorman's first year of arbitration eligibility. The 25-year-old has regressed at the dish over the last two seasons, finishing 2025 with a .666 OPS, 14 home runs and a 33.8 percent strikeout rate in 111 games. The left-handed-hitting Gorman could get another opportunity for regular at-bats versus right-handed pitching in 2026, though his playing time outlook would diminish if the Cardinals are unable to trade Nolan Arenado.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Could get some looks at first base

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Wednesday that Gorman could "potentially" see some start at first base following the season-ending injury to Willson Contreras (shoulder), Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Alec Burleson will be the team's primary first baseman down the stretch, but Gorman might also see some action there on days when Burleson plays the outfield. Gorman's playing-time outlook took a hit with the returns of Brendan Donovan and Nolan Arenado from the injured list, but Gorman now has another avenue to playing time, albeit a narrow one.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Sitting in Arenado's return

Gorman is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Gorman had started in each of the Cardinals' last 29 games, but he could be headed for a steep reduction in playing time over the final two weeks of the regular season after St. Louis reinstated Nolan Arenado (shoulder) from the injured list Monday. With Arenado immediately slotting back into the lineup at his usual post at third base and with Willson Contreras (undisclosed) back in action Monday following a one-game hiatus, St. Louis now has its top options at the corner-infield spots available for the first time since late July.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Homers among three hits

Gorman went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in a 5-1 win against the Athletics on Wednesday. Gorman singled in his first two plate appearances before launching a 381-foot solo homer in the seventh inning. The infielder snapped an 11-game stretch without a multi-hit performance, and he had batted a paltry .135 (5-for-37) during that span. Gorman isn't lighting the world on fire with a .726 OPS on the campaign, but he has offered a bit of pop with 14 homers and 44 RBI across 338 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Swats two-run homer

Gorman went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's loss to the Pirates. Gorman had one of just three hits for the Cardinals on the evening. Gorman's now driven in four runs over his last three games and has hit safely in five straight while reaching base safely 10 times over that span, registering a 4:4 BB:K.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Breaks game open with homer

Gorman went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Monday's 8-3 victory over the Marlins. Gorman waited until the ninth inning to notch his first hit, but he made it count with a two-run blast off Josh Simpson that put the game out of reach. Filling in regularly at third base with Nolan Arenado (shoulder) sidelined, Gorman has held his own in August, slashing .250/.365/.477 with a double, three homers and nine RBI across 14 games.
