Garcia has been diagnosed with a minor sprain of his right hand/wrist, Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic reports.
Garcia suffered the injury during Sunday's game against the Brewers, forcing his removal. The infielder said Tuesday that he's day-to-day and will not go on the injured list, but he's not in Tuesday's lineup versus the Twins and seems likely to miss additional games. Curtis Mead will receive an uptick in playing time at first base for the Nationals for as long as Garcia is shelved.

Nationals' Luis Garcia: Scheduled for MRI
Nationals manager Blake Butera said after Sunday's 3-2 win over the Brewers that Garcia will undergo an MRI on his sore right wrist Monday, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Garcia went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before he was lifted from Sunday's contest in advance of the sixth inning. The MRI should provide more clarity on the severity of the wrist injury, which Butera said that Garcia sustained while swinging the bat rather than playing the field.

It was a great day for essentially everyone in the Nationals lineup with all but one starter recording an RBI in the game. Nobody had more than Garcia's three, though, as he knocked in a run on a fielder's choice in the third inning and drove in two with a single in the ninth. Those were the first RBI of the season for the 25-year-old, who had 66 in 139 games played last year. With Andres Chaparro optioned to Triple-A on Sunday, Garcia will likely get most of his playing time at first base.

Washington is hoping the reduced defensive responsibilities will help the 25-year-old's bat find another level after he slashed just .252/.289/.412 in 2025 with 16 homers and 14 steals in 139 games.

Garcia went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles.
Getting the start at first base and batting third, Garcia continued to flail away at the plate. The 25-year-old homered in his spring debut Feb. 27 after missing the early part of the Grapefruit League schedule due to a hamstring strain, but through 12 games in March he's gone just 3-for-34 (.088) with zero extra-base hits and a 1:8 BB:K. Garcia is set to be an everyday player for the Nationals to begin the season, splitting time between second base and first base, but if his struggles carry over into the regular season, it could open the door for Nasim Nunez to cut into his playing time at the keystone. Over the last two seasons, Garcia has slashed .267/.304/.428 with 34 homers and 36 steals in 279 games.
