Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said after Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Pirates that Sewald has been removed from the closer's role for the time being and will be used in lower-leverage situations, Jack Sommers of SI.com reports.

After recording just one out and yielding three earned runs en route to blowing his second save in his last three chances during Tuesday's 8-7 win in 12 innings, Sewald was passed over for the save chance Wednesday. Brandyn Garcia got the call in the ninth inning and retired three of the four batters he faced to earn his second save of the season, though Lovullo declined to name him the team's closer moving forward. Instead, Lovullo indicated that he plans to play matchups for any save chances that emerge in the short term with Garcia, Juan Morillo, Jonathan Loaisiga and Kevin Ginkel all potentially factoring into the late-inning picture. Sewald could eventually join that group, but he'll first have to pitch effectively in less pressure-packed situations after he had yielded at least one run in seven of his last 13 appearances.

The Padres reinstated Estrada (knee) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

Estrada will be available out of the bullpen for the Padres' series finale versus the Rockies after San Diego cleared a spot for him by designating right-hander Matt Waldron for assignment. Prior to landing on the IL on June 5 due to right knee inflammation, Estrada handled a key setup role in front of closer Mason Miller. In 21 appearances, Estrada has notched two wins, seven holds and one save while pitching to a 3.48 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB across 20.2 innings.

Bleday is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Guardians.

The left-handed-hitting Bleday plays against most southpaws, but he will begin Wednesday's game on the bench as the Guardians send lefty Joey Cantillo to the hill. Ivan Johnson will cover left field for the Reds.

Campusano is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies.

Campusano will receive the afternoon off after he had started behind the plate in both of the Padres' previous contests. Freddy Fermin will handle catching duties for the Friars in the series finale.

Koss will start at third base and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Giants.

Koss will pick up a second straight start at third base in place of Casey Schmitt (knee), who has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus that will likely require season-ending surgery. Though he currently sits atop the depth chart, Koss' run as an everyday player will be short-lived. Giants manager Tony Vitello said that Matt Chapman (abdomen) should be ready to come off the 10-day injured list at some point during the club's series with the Padres later this week, at which point Koss will shift back into a utility role.

Gilbert is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers.

The left-handed-hitting Gilbert was on the bench against a righty (Logan Henderson) for Tuesday's 8-2 loss and will remain out of the lineup again for the series finale while southpaw Thomas Pannone toes the rubber for Milwaukee. Grant McCray will get the start in center field for the second straight day, after he filled in as the starting right fielder in the prior two contests while Jung Hoo Lee managed an elbow injury.

Vaughn is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants.

Vaughn was on the bench for the first two games of last weekend's series versus the Rockies, but he started in each of Milwaukee's ensuing three contests and went 3-for-10 with a home run, a walk, two runs and two RBI. With Jake Bauers (foot) back at first base Wednesday following a one-game absence and Luis Lara receiving the start in right field, Vaughn will retreat to the bench for the series finale in San Francisco. Despite playing different positions, Vaughn and Lara appear to be in a quasi-timeshare for the final spot in Milwaukee's regular lineup versus righties, though the Brewers should have room in the starting nine for both players against lefties.

Vierling was removed from Wednesday's contest versus the Orioles with an undisclosed injury, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Vierling came up gimpy while legging out a triple in the fifth inning and was removed for a pinch runner. The Tigers should have more on his condition shortly. Vierling contributed a double and a triple in his two plate appearances before exiting.

Giants manager Tony Vitello said Wednesday that Chapman (abdomen) will be activated from the 10-day injured list at some point during this weekend's series versus the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The Giants begin a road trip with a four-game series in San Diego beginning Thursday. Chapman has not played any rehab games, but it appears he'll skip a rehab assignment despite being shelved for the past month. The veteran third baseman is sporting a disappointing .235/.324/.368 batting line with seven home runs in 84 contests for San Francisco this season.

Giants manager Tony Vitello said Wednesday that Schmitt will require arthroscopic surgery for the torn meniscus in his left knee and will "more than likely" miss the rest of the season, Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Vitello said a date hasn't been set for when Schmitt will have surgery, though the 27-year-old is slated to have his procedure performed "as soon as possible." A formal recovery timeline for Schmitt should be provided when the operation is completed, as it's not yet known whether he'll require a meniscectomy or a full meniscus repair. Schmitt would likely face a 3-to-6-week recovery if he requires the former procedure, while a full repair often entails a 4-to-6-month recovery timeline. The 45-62 Giants are well out of the mix for a playoff spot, so Schmitt doesn't look like he'll be rushed back into action even if he gets a meniscectomy and hits no snags in the rehab process. Schmitt had been in the midst of a breakout campaign before suffering the knee injury, slashing .271/.301/.483 with 21 home runs, nine stolen bases, 55 RBI and 47 runs across 409 plate appearances while making starts at all four infield spots in addition to left field.
