  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Stumbles vs. Pittsburgh

Sandoval (1-2) took the loss Sunday against the Pirates, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out six. The Pirates got to Sandoval early Sunday, scoring twice in the first inning before putting up a five spot in the fifth. Coming into the day, Sandoval had held opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his previous four outings, posting a 2.61 ERA across 20.2 innings in that span. Sandoval's ERA now sits at 4.76 through seven starts (34 innings) this year with a 1.85 WHIP and 35:16 K:BB. The southpaw will look to bounce back his next time out, currently scheduled to come next weekend at home against the Giants.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Takes loss in Toronto

Sandoval (1-1) was tagged with the loss against the Blue Jays on Tuesday, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out four across six innings. Sandoval limited the Blue Jays to one run through four frames, and both of the runs he gave up in the fifth were unearned due to a throwing error by Caleb Durbin. It still wasn't Sandoval's best outing, as the 11 baserunners he allowed were his most of the season, and the eight hits he gave up were second-most. The positive news for the 29-year-old southpaw is that he's tossed at least 84 pitches in each of his last four outings, a sign that he's operating under a full workload after a lengthy recovery from an internal brace surgery on his throwing elbow that he underwent in June of 2024. Sandoval will take a 3.30 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 30 innings into his next start, which is lined up for this weekend on the road against the Pirates.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Picks up first win

Sandoval (1-0) earned the win Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five over five innings. Sandoval worked around frequent traffic on the bases before Chicago finally broke through in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly. He returned for the sixth but walked the leadoff batter, prompting his exit, and watched from the dugout as the inherited runner came around to score. Fortunately for the left-hander, Boston erupted for 13 runs through the first six innings, handing him his first win of the season on a silver platter. Sandoval has now completed at least five innings in three of his five starts with the Red Sox, posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB across 24 innings. He's scheduled to face the Athletics in his next start Sunday.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Yields two homers in no-decision

Sandoval allowed two runs on five hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Wednesday. Sandoval gave up solo home runs to Jonah Heim and Lawrence Butler but otherwise kept the A's off the board. This was the second time in four starts Sandoval has gotten to the five-inning mark as he continues to build up after missing more than two years due to elbow and other arm-related injuries. The southpaw has posted a 3.32 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 20:6 K:BB through 19 innings so far this season. Sandoval is projected to make his next start at home versus the White Sox.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Holds Toronto scoreless Friday

Sandoval did not factor into the decision in Friday's 6-4 win over the Blue Jays, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.2 scoreless innings. Sandoval threw just 51 of 84 pitches for strikes with six whiffs but managed to keep the Blue Jays in check, departing with two outs and two men on in the fifth inning before Tyron Guerrero finished the frame. While the 29-year-old Sandoval has not pitched beyond the fifth in any of his three outings with the Red Sox, he's yielded just five earned runs while increasing his pitch count each time out. He'll take a 3.21 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB across 14 innings into a road matchup with the Athletics next week.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Awarded another start

Sandoval will start Saturday's game against the Rays in Boston. Sandoval will receive a second turn through the rotation after pitching well in his return from the 60-day injured list and in his Red Sox debut July 9, when he struck out five while allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk across 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox. The veteran southpaw may need another strong showing against the Rays to ensure he sticks in the rotation on a longer-term basis, as the Red Sox may not have a spot available for him once both Ranger Suarez (groin) and Connelly Early (elbow) return from the injured list.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Encouraging results in season debut

Sandoval took a no-decision Thursday against the White Sox, allowing one run on five hits and one walk in 4.1 innings. He struck out five. Making his season debut for the Red Sox, Sandoval fared well in what also was his first big-league appearance since 2024 following a lengthy recovery from internal brace surgery and several setbacks. The 29-year-old southpaw threw 41 of his 65 pitches for strikes, but he couldn't quite get through the fifth inning as his control began to wane. Connelly Early (elbow) and Ranger Suarez (groin) could both be back shortly after the All-Star break, which would likely force Sandoval into a bullpen role.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Slated to start Thursday

Sandoval (biceps) is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the White Sox in Chicago, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports. The Red Sox brought Sandoval back from the 60-day injured list Monday, but he'll end up waiting for a few days before making his first big-league appearance since June 21, 2024, after enduring a lengthy recovery from internal brace surgery and multiple arm-related setbacks. Sandoval was sharp over the course of his six-start minor-league rehab assignment, generating a 1.96 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB across 18.1 innings between four outings with Triple-A Worcester and two with Double-A Portland. The southpaw built up to 68 pitches in his final rehab start over the weekend, so he could have a light workload restriction in place while he slots into the spot in the Boston rotation that previously belonged to Connelly Early (elbow), who was moved to the IL last week.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Returns from IL, will join rotation

The Red Sox reinstated Sandoval (biceps) from the 60-day injured list Monday. Sandoval is on the cusp of making his first appearance in the big leagues since June 21, 2024, as his recovery from internal brace surgery on his elbow and related setbacks had extended his stay on the shelf for more than two weeks. He's expected to make his Red Sox debut Thursday against the White Sox, either as a starter or bulk reliever, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. The left-hander ran his pitch count up to 68 in his final rehab start with Double-A Portland on Saturday, so he could be operating with a bit of a workload restriction Thursday.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Could join Boston's rotation

Sandoval (biceps) is an option to replace Connelly Early (elbow) in Boston's rotation, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy mentioned Sandoval or Brayan Bello as potential fill-ins for Early, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with left elbow inflammation. Sandoval, whose rehab assignment ends Saturday, will make one more start at Double-A Portland this weekend and is scheduled to throw around 70 pitches. With a scheduled day off coming Monday, however, Boston won't need a fifth starter until July 11.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Hits four innings in rehab start

Sandoval (biceps) struck out three and allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk across four innings Sunday in his rehab start with Triple-A Worcester. Sandoval built up to 60 pitches (40 strikes) in Sunday's appearance, his fifth minor-league start since he resumed a rehab assignment June 5. He generated five whiffs in the outing and averaged 92.8 mph with his four-seam fastball, down one mph from his average with the Angels during the 2024 season before he underwent internal brace surgery that June. The 29-year-old southpaw is now well removed from the elbow procedure, but a bout with biceps soreness during his rehab assignment in April continued to delay his Red Sox debut. Sandoval's current 30-day rehab window will come to an end Saturday, so he'll likely make one more start with either Worcester or Double-A Portland before coming off the 60-day injured list. With Jake Bennett having excelled as the Red Sox's No. 5 starter over the past few weeks, Sandoval might have to settle for a multi-inning relief role once he gets activated.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Next rehab start scheduled

Sandoval (biceps) will make his next rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, MLB.com reports. Currently in the midst of his second rehab assignment of the season, Sandoval is being built up slowly while he works his way back from left biceps discomfort. During his previous rehab outing Friday with Worcester, the left-hander threw 16 pitches over 1.1 innings, allowing no hits and walking one batter.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Starting rehab stint

Sandoval (biceps/elbow) will begin a rehab assignment this weekend, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. The left-hander made a pair of rehab appearances in April while working his back from the internal brace procedure he underwent on his elbow in 2024, but a biceps issue forced him to shut down his throwing program for a bit. Sandoval has since ramped things back up and has now been cleared for game action. The 29-year-old will likely require a handful of starts in the minors before gaining full clearance.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Shuffled to 60-day IL

The Red Sox transferred Sandoval (biceps/elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday. While working his way back from the June 2024 internal brace surgery he required on his left elbow, Sandoval hit a setback in late April, when he was pulled off his rehab assignment after experiencing tightness in his left biceps. Though additional testing on his arm revealed nothing overly concerning, Sandoval has yet to restart his throwing program, making it unclear when he might be ready to resume his minor-league assignment. The move to the 60-day IL won't affect Sandoval's timeline for making his Red Sox debut, as he wasn't on track to be activated by late May following the recent setback.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Undergoes imaging

Sandoval (biceps) underwent additional testing after being pulled from a rehab assignment, and the imaging revealed nothing alarming, MLB.com reports. Sandoval, who was initially on rehab because of an elbow injury, developed a biceps issue in his second rehab outing and was shut down. It's encouraging that nothing of concern was found in the test results, but the Red Sox have not announced when Sandoval will begin throwing again.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Biceps issue viewed as minor

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Sandoval isn't expected to require further imaging on his left biceps and will likely resume throwing after a few days of rest, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Shortly before he was scheduled to make his third rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Sandoval was pulled off his minor-league assignment and reported to Boston to receive further evaluation after experiencing biceps tightness following his previous outing. Fortunately for Sandoval -- who is working his way back from a June 2024 internal brace surgery on his left elbow -- he appears to have avoided any sort of major setback and could soon be ready to link back up with Worcester to continue his rehab assignment. Even so, the 29-year-old left-hander still isn't expected to be ready to return from the 15-day injured list until at least early May, and the Red Sox may not have a rotation spot available for him once he's activated.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Hits snag during rehab assignment

Sandoval (elbow) returned to Boston on Sunday to be re-evaluated after experiencing left biceps tightness coming out of his most recent rehab start, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Sandoval had been lined up to make his third rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, but he instead ended up being scratched after the biceps discomfort surfaced. The Red Sox are still gathering more information about the severity of Sandoval's setback, but even if the biceps injury proves to be a minor concern, it likely ends any chance the southpaw might have had at returning from the 15-day injured list before the end of April. After undergoing an internal brace surgery on his left elbow in June 2024, Sandoval was shaky for Worcester in his first game action in just under two years. Between his two rehab starts, Sandoval turned in a 8.44 ERA, 2.55 WHIP and 4:7 K:BB while also hitting three batters over 5.1 innings.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Makes first rehab start

Sandoval (elbow) allowed three unearned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday. Sandoval made his first appearance in a game that counts since June 2024. He was victimized by shaky defense, including his own, in the first inning, when all three runs scored. Results, however, were less important than the left-hander getting in the work. Sandoval threw 63 pitches (35 strikes) and got four up-and-downs. He's expected to make several outings while on rehab before the Red Sox decide where Sandoval best fits in with the pitching staff.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Poised for rehab assignment

Sandoval (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Portland on Sunday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports. Sandoval was held out of the entirety of the spring training schedule as he continues to work his way back from June 2024 internal brace surgery. The Red Sox don't have an opening in the rotation for Sandoval at the moment, and the lefty can't be optioned to the minors once he's activated from the 15-day injured list, so the team could slow-play Sandoval on his rehab assignment until they decide how to deploy him.

  • Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Will throw in game Monday

Sandoval (elbow) will throw three innings in a minor-league game Monday, MLB.com reports. Sandoval never got into a Grapefruit League game this spring while rehabbing from Tommy John elbow surgery. Both Sandoval and Kutter Crawford (wrist) are expected to throw in games Monday, and both will serve as starting depth once deemed ready.
