Canario is not in the Pirates' starting lineup against the Padres on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Canario will open the weekend series on the bench while Tommy Pham, Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds man the outfield for the Pirates. Canario has reached base safely in each of his last six games and has gone 9-for-26 (.346) with two steals, four runs scored and one RBI over that span.

Anderson signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Friday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Anderson opted out of his minor-league deal with the Cardinals and will now attempt to create a role for himself within the Rockies organization. The 34-year-old righty produced a 6.20 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 20.1 innings at Triple-A Memphis and will likely need to improve upon those numbers before getting a shot to pitch in Colorado's bullpen.

Pomeranz will serve as the Cubs' opening pitcher for Saturday's game against the Reds, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.

Pomeranz is likely to work the first inning before giving way to right-hander Ben Brown, who is expected to operate as a bulk reliever, per Jared Wyllys of AllCHGO.com. Since being promoted from Triple-A Iowa on April 23, Pomeranz has yet to allow a run over 12.2 innings with Chicago and owns a 0.55 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB.

Atlanta will recall Elder from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox, Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

With AJ Smith-Shawver out for the season due to a torn UCL in his right elbow, Elder is scheduled to come up from the minors to fill the opening in Atlanta's rotation. The 26-year-old has made eight starts in the majors this season and owns a 4.50 ERA and 1.25 WHIP alongside a 33:13 K:BB across 44 innings.

Abbott (5-0) earned the win against the Cubs on Friday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight over seven scoreless innings.

Abbott generated 12 whiffs on 93 pitches and retired the final 15 batters he faced, completing seven innings for the first time this season. It was an especially impressive effort considering he just limited the vaunted Cubs lineup to one run Saturday. The southpaw improved to 5-0 on the year and has now yielded only eight earned runs across nine starts. He'll carry a 1.51 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 53:18 K:BB across 47.2 innings into a home matchup with the Brewers next week.

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Friday that Smith-Shawver has been diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow, Grant McAuley of the Marietta Daily Journal reports.

Atlanta placed Smith-Shawver landed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, after team doctors determined that he had sustained a right elbow strain during his start earlier that day in the first game of a doubleheader versus the Phillies. After further evaluation, it was apparent that Smith-Shawver was headed for a long-term absence, so Atlanta transferred him to the 60-day IL on Friday. With UCL damage in his elbow having now been confirmed, Smith-Shawver will require a surgical procedure, though Snitker noted that it hasn't been determined whether the right-hander would require Tommy John surgery or another type of procedure. Surgery of any kind would almost certainly spell an end to Smith-Shawver's season while also affecting his availability for the start of the 2026 campaign. Bryce Elder will be called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to join the rotation as a replacement for Smith-Shawver, who will finish the 2025 season with a 3-2 record to go with a 3.86 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 42:21 K:BB across 44.1 innings.

Pagan earned the save in Friday's 6-2 win over the Cubs, striking out one while recording the final two outs of the ninth inning.

Pagan entered with runners on second and third and needed just eight pitches to close out the game, recording a strikeout and a groundout. The 34-year-old has allowed seven runs over his last 10 appearances but has still nailed down six straight saves. On the season, he owns a 3.86 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 30:7 K:BB across 25.2 innings while securing 14 of 16 save opportunities.

Sanchez is not in Friday's lineup against the Giants.

Sanchez had started the last two games the Marlins played against lefty starters, but he'll head to the bench in this one against southpaw Kyle Harrison. With Dane Myers activated and Heriberto Hernandez promoted, the Marlins have more options against southpaws, but Sanchez should still be loosely considered an everyday player.

Allen (hand) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Red Sox.

Allen was struck in the hand by a pitch during Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Phillies, and he'll miss at least one start due to the injury. The 26-year-old already had X-rays come back negative and may not miss much additional time.

Reid-Foley agreed to a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

The right-hander parted ways with the Mets last week and will now test his luck with the Diamondbacks. Reid-Foley struggled in his 15 outings at the Triple-A level this season with an 8.36 ERA, 2.43 WHIP and 24:14 K:BB over 14 innings.
