Jake Cronenworth 1B | SD
Padres' Jake Cronenworth: Rare lineup omission
Cronenworth is not in the Padres' lineup versus the Giants on Tuesday.
Cronenworth has missed just one game in 2025 that he has been healthy for. The last game the second baseman did not start was July 13, but he still entered off the bench for a plate appearance. With the left-handed bat on the bench Tuesday, Jose Iglesias has the start at second base and is batting eighth.

Francisco Alvarez C | NYM
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Will eventually need surgery
Manager Carlos Mendoza said Alvarez (thumb), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, will need to undergo surgery at some point, but the catcher will be re-evaluated in 10-to-14 days to determine if he can play through the injury for the rest of the season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Alvarez was diagnosed with a right thumb sprain after suffering the injury on a head-first slide into second base Sunday, and it's possible the injury ends his 2025 campaign. However, he's going to attempt to put off surgery until the offseason and play through the sprained thumb. The Mets should have a better idea whether Alvarez will return this season once he's re-evaluated.

Freddy Fermin C | SD
Padres' Freddy Fermin: Idle Tuesday
Fermin is not in the Padres' lineup versus the Giants on Tuesday.
The Padres' new catcher is slashing .318/.348/.409 since joining the lineup Aug. 2. Since Fermin's last day off Aug. 13, he's gone 3-for-13 with three strikeouts in four games. As he takes a seat Tuesday, Elias Diaz has the start behind the plate and is batting ninth.

Jackson Merrill CF | SD
Padres' Jackson Merrill: Remains day-to-day
Merrill (ankle) is not in the Padres' lineup versus the Giants on Tuesday.
Merrill did not play in Monday's series opener against the Giants after departing Sunday's matchup against the Dodgers early due to a left ankle injury. He had been dealing the the injury since Friday. Gavin Sheets, Ramon Laureano and Fernando Tatis are the starting outfielders Tuesday as Merrill heals up on the bench.

Cal Quantrill RP | TEX
Marlins' Cal Quantrill: Placed on outright waivers
The Marlins placed Quantrill on outright waivers Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Given his $3.5 million salary, Quantrill is a good bet to clear waivers. The Marlins would have the ability to retain him at that point, although it's likelier the veteran right-hander will be cut loose. Quantrill has posted a 5.50 ERA and 82:30 K:BB over 109.2 innings this season and an 11.25 ERA in three starts this month.

Nick Lodolo SP | CIN
Reds' Nick Lodolo: Completes side session
Lodolo (finger) tossed a bullpen session Monday and is scheduled to throw off a mound again Wednesday, MLB.com reports.
Though Lodolo is making good progress in his recovery from the left index finger blister that forced him to the injured list Aug. 5, the southpaw isn't on track to be activated when first eligible later this week. The Reds will likely wait until Lodolo completes his bullpen session Wednesday before determining his next steps, but manager Terry Francona said that the 27-year-old hasn't been ruled out from making a start during the team's road series versus the Dodgers that begins next Monday. Nick Martinez would be in line for another turn through the rotation if Lodolo isn't ready to go for the Dodgers series.

Austin Riley 3B | ATL
Braves' Austin Riley: Return delayed due to soreness
Riley (abdomen) felt more soreness during a workout Tuesday and is not expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list anytime soon, Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Riley has been sidelined for most of August with a strained lower abdominal muscle and continues to feel discomfort each time he attempts to ramp up activities. With Atlanta out of playoff contention, the club has little incentive to push its third baseman back onto the active roster. Consider Riley out indefinitely. Nacho Alvarez will continue to occupy the hot corner in Riley's absence.

Josiah Gray SP | WAS
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Faces hitters
Gray (elbow) threw a live batting practice session Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
It's the first time Gray has faced hitters since he underwent Tommy John surgery with an internal brace in July 2024. Gray could make a late-season return to the Nationals' active roster, but the primary goal will be to have him ready to go for the 2026 campaign.

Hayden Senger C | NYM
Mets' Hayden Senger: Back in majors
The Mets recalled Senger from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday.
Francisco Alvarez (thumb) is headed back to the injured list, so Senger will rejoin the Mets to serve as the club's backup catcher. The 28-year-old has a .174/.208/.196 slash line in 49 MLB plate appearances this year, and he isn't likely to see much playing time behind fill-in starter Luis Torrens.
