  • Dominic Smith DH | ATL

Red Sox's Dominic Smith: Taking seat against lefty

Smith is out of the lineup for Friday's game versus the Royals, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Lefty Cole Ragans is starting Friday for Kansas City, so the lefty-hitting Smith will hit the bench for the second time in the past three games. Romy Gonzalez will receive a look at first base in the series opener.

  • Jose Quijada RP | LAA

Angels' Jose Quijada: Takes rehab to Triple-A

Quijada (elbow) had his minor-league rehab assignment moved from the Arizona Complex League to Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday, per MLB.com.

Quijada logged five outings while with the organization's ACL club, allowing two runs on four hits while notching an 11:0 K:BB over 4.2 innings. In his first outing with Salt Lake on Wednesday, he walked two batters but didn't allow a run while recording two outs (one by strikeout). Quijada could be ready to return to the big-league club shortly after the All-Star break.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: On bench vs. southpaw

Yoshida is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Royals, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Yoshida has a .923 OPS with five extra-base hits and 12 RBI over his past 14 games, but he'll head to the bench Friday as lefty Cole Ragans pitches for Kansas City. Tyler O'Neill will rest his legs as the designated hitter while Rob Refsnyder picks up a start in the outfield.

  • Angels' Kenny Rosenberg: Covers six frames in season debut

Rosenberg pitched in long relief against Seattle on Thursday, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four batters over six innings.

Jack Kochanowicz was given the start in his MLB debut but lasted just three innings, giving up five runs (four earned). Rosenberg entered in the fourth and took on what amounted to a full starting workload, tossing 95 pitches (55 strikes). It was the southpaw's first big-league outing of the season, but he was ready to handle the hefty workload since he was a starter in all 14 of his appearances with Triple-A Salt Lake. Given his usage Thursday, it wouldn't be surprising if Rosenberg is sent back to the minors in short order, since he likely won't be available to take the mound again until after the All-Star break.

  • Royals' Freddy Fermin: Heading to bench Friday

Fermin is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Red Sox.

Fermin started the previous six games, splitting his time between catcher and DH, but he'll receive a day off after he went 7-for-20 with two walks, two RBI and four runs during that span. Adam Frazier will serve as Kansas City's designated hitter Friday.

  • Xzavion Curry RP | NYM

Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Back in bigs

The Guardians recalled Curry from Triple-A Columbus on Friday.

Curry will join the active roster in place of Sam Hentges (shoulder), who's been placed on the injured list. Curry has logged a 5.74 ERA across 15.2 innings with the Guardians this season.

  • Sam Hentges RP | SF

Guardians' Sam Hentges: On IL with shoulder swelling

The Guardians placed Hentges on the 15-day injured list Friday due to left shoulder inflammation, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Hentges has appeared in 25 games after missing the first month of the season and owns a 3.04 ERA with nine holds across 23.2 innings. However, he'll be shelved until at least late July due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder. Xzavion Curry was recalled from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move.

  • Akil Baddoo LF | MIL

Tigers' Akil Baddoo: Sent down to Triple-A

The Tigers optioned Baddoo to Triple-A Toledo on Friday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Baddoo was called up Monday to replace Austin Meadows (hamstring). After going 0-for-7 in three games after the promotion, Baddoo will surrender his active roster spot to Ryan Vilade.

  • Trey Wingenter RP | CHC

Red Sox's Trey Wingenter: Returns to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Wingenter to Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Boston selected the 30-year-old's contract Tuesday, but he'll head back to the minors after he surrendered three runs over one inning in his lone appearance. Wingenter was demoted to make room on the roster for Friday's starter Cooper Criswell.

  • Ryan Vilade RF | TB

Tigers' Ryan Vilade: Joining big club

The Tigers recalled Vilade from Triple-A Toledo on Friday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

He'll take Akil Baddoo's spot on the active roster, marking Vilade's first MLB stint since May. The 25-year-old has slashed .286/.367/.470 with nine home runs and 13 stolen bases across 270 plate appearances with Toledo. He should primarily provide outfield depth but could see infield work if needed.
