  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Sitting again Sunday

Yoshida is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners. The left-handed-hitting Yoshida will hit the bench for the third time in four games, despite the Red Sox facing right-handed starting pitchers in each of those contests. With Yoshida having cobbled together an underwhelming .248/.329/.331 slash line over 164 plate appearances on the season, the Red Sox appear ready to scale back his role to see if another player can inject some life into the offense.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Picks up steal

Yoshida went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Mariners. Yoshida has hit safely in his last five games, going 6-for-18 (.333) in that span. The 32-year-old has settled into a part-time role lately as he battles Mickey Gasper for playing time at designated hitter. Yoshida is hitting .248 on the year and has added a .660 OPS, one home run, two steals, 10 RBI and 15 runs scored over 164 plate appearances. His plate discipline remains pretty good, but with less power than ever, Yoshida doesn't add much in fantasy.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Back in lineup as leadoff man

Yoshida will start at designated hitter and bat leadoff in Sunday's game against the Rangers. After being left out of the lineup for the first two contests of the series even with the Rangers sending a pair of right-handers to the hill, Yoshida will make his return to the starting nine as Boston's table setter. Mickey Gasper filled those duties the previous two games, but he'll head to the bench Sunday while he manages a tight groin. If Gasper's groin issue is only a short-term concern, Yoshida might have to settle for a part-time role while he's running cold at the plate. Since the start of June, Yoshida has gone 2-for-18 with a 1:6 BB:K in five games.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Atones for miscue

Yoshida went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 9-4 win over Cleveland. Yoshida's two run-single during a six-run seventh inning gave Boston a lead it never relinquished. The go-ahead hit atoned for a fourth-inning miscue, when he lost sight of a fly ball in left field that led to the Guardians taking a lead. Yoshida is getting regular work with Roman Anthony's rehab from a finger injury taking longer than originally anticipated. The outfield/DH logjam that had limited Yoshida's playing time earlier in the season has cleared up for the time being.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Out of lineup Thursday

Yoshida is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against Atlanta, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com Yoshida will sit out of Thursday's lineup since left-hander Chris Sale is taking the mound for Atlanta. Boston will opt to go with Andruw Monasterio as the DH, batting fifth. Yoshida has only recorded 16 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers this season and has a .200/.250/.333 slash line in that split.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Sitting against right-hander

Yoshida is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against Atlanta. Even with right-hander Spencer Strider on the mound, interim manager Chad Tracy is going with Mickey Gasper in the second spot in the lineup at designated hitter. Yoshida is 7-for-24 at the plate this month but has just one extra-base hit and zero RBI since April 19.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Receives uptick in playing time

Yoshida started at designated hitter and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Tampa Bay. Yoshida is getting more opportunities with Roman Anthony (wrist) landing on the 10-day injured list Thursday. Without Anthony, the lefty-batting Yoshida has started two consecutive games and should continue to get work whenever the Red Sox face a right-hander.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Enters camp in limbo

Yoshida's role for the 2026 roster is uncertain entering training camp, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Yoshida enters the fourth year of a five-year contract having underwhelmed since his arrival in Boston. Injuries have played a part, but the 32-year-old has also been passed on the depth chart by younger options. A shoulder injury to open 2025 limited him to 55 regular-season games in which he recorded an unremarkable slash line of .266/.307/.388, but an .837 OPS during the month of September suggests the shoulder was still an issue most of the year. Designated hitter appears to be his best fit, but the Red Sox also need to figure out a spot for Triston Casas (knee) when he's cleared to play, and the team already has four other outfielders pushing for regular at-bats.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Out of lineup Tuesday

Yoshida is absent from the lineup Tuesday in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Yankees. It will be lefty Max Fried on the bump for the Yankees, so the left-handed-hitting Yoshida will retreat to the bench to begin the contest. Rob Refsnyder is starting at designated hitter and batting leadoff for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Extends hit streak

Yoshida went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 4-3 win over the Tigers. The Red Sox did little against Detroit starter Casey Mize for six innings until Yoshida opened the seventh with a single. Two batters later and after 80 pitches, Mize was removed, and the Red Sox took advantage of the bullpen. Yoshida scored in the seventh, and Boston scored runs in the following two innings to complete the comeback. The multi-hit effort extended Yoshida's hit streak to seven games, during which he's gone 13-for-30 (.433) with four extra-base hits and five RBI.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Runs RBI streak to five games

Yoshida went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Rays. Yoshida extended an RBI streak to five games when his single plated the second run in Boston's three-run ninth inning. He's knocked in six runs during the streak. September has been Yoshida's most productive month, as he's batting .302 (13-for-43) with nine RBI over 13 contests. He should see regular work as the designated hitter against right-handers over the final week of the regular season.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Knocks in two in win

Yoshida went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Athletics. Yoshida, who entered the game with a .618 OPS through 44 games, batted cleanup and delivered a run-scoring single in the first inning. He later hustled out an infield single with the bases loaded to plate a run in the fifth. His season numbers are underwhelming, but Yoshida is making a modest impact in September. He's gone 10-for-32 (.313) with two doubles and six RBI over 10 games this month.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Out of lineup versus lefty

Yoshida is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians. Yoshida had started in all three of the Red Sox's games versus Pittsburgh over the weekend and went 2-for-10 with two walks and one run, but he'll head to the bench Monday while the Guardians send lefty Parker Messick to the hill. Rob Refsnyder will replace Yoshida in the lineup at designated hitter.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Finishes month on sour note

Yoshida served as the designated hitter and went 0-for-4 in Sunday's 5-2 win over Pittsburgh. Yoshida ended August on a down note. Over the final 12 games of the month, he had a .412 OPS with one extra-base hit and zero RBI. He's now batting just .224 with a .609 OPS and two home runs since his return to Boston in early July. It's fair to wonder how long Yoshida's leash is at DH given the limited impact his bat has made. Once Wilyer Abreu (calf) is ready to come off the IL, Yoshida's playing time should take a hit.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Idle against southpaw

Yoshida is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees. For the second time in the series, the left-handed-hitting Yoshida will bow out of the lineup while the Yankees send a left-handed pitcher (Carlos Rodon) to the bump. With Yoshida on the bench, Roman Anthony will serve as the Red Sox's designated hitter, and Jhostynxon Garcia will pick up a start in right field.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Sitting for second straight game

Yoshida is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. With Houston sending lefty Framber Valdez to the hill, Yoshida will take a seat for the second day in a row. Rob Refsnyder will serve as Boston's designated hitter in the series finale.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Starting against RHP again

Yoshida will start at designated hitter and bat fifth in Sunday's game against the Dodgers. Yoshida will make his second straight start against a right-handed pitching, and he could begin to find himself in the lineup on a more frequent basis with Ceddanne Rafaela seeing more playing time at second base to cover for Marcelo Mayer (wrist), temporarily relieving Boston's logjam in the outfield/DH ranks.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Makes first outfield start

Yoshida started in left field and went 0-for-3 in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Cubs. Yoshida made his first start in the field after a series of appearances as the designated hitter or as a pinch hitter. He was eventually pinch hit for against lefty Drew Pomeranz. Yoshida has gone 6-for-22 (.273) with one RBI, a stolen base and one run scored over seven games since coming off the injured list in the week leading up to the All-Star break.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Activated ahead of season debut

The Red Sox activated Yoshida (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday. Yoshida is finally ready to make his season debut for the Red Sox after a long recovery from offseason surgery on his right shoulder. The 31-year-old will start at designated hitter and will bat sixth in Wednesday's game versus righty Antonio Senzatela and the Rockies. Yoshida might have to get off to a good start if he wants to see regular playing time, as the Red Sox have lots of mouths to feed between the outfield and DH.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Begins rehab assignment

Yoshida (shoulder) went 0-for-2 with a walk for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday. Yoshida kicked off a rehab assignment with the WooSox, serving as the DH and playing all seven innings in the first game of a doubleheader. Given his lengthy stint on the injured list, Yoshida may be given the maximum time allowed (20 days) before before being activated. It's unclear if there will be a regular role for Yoshida when he returns, particularly as Boston looks to get at-bats for top prospect Roman Anthony.
