  • Padres' Freddy Fermin: Sent to 7-day IL

The Padres placed Fermin (concussion) on the 7-day injured list Sunday. Fermin was diagnosed with a concussion following his early exit Saturday, when he was hit in the mask by a warm-up pitch in the sixth inning. San Diego called up Blake Hunt from Triple-A El Paso to work behind the plate with Rodolfo Duran, who will handle catching duties during Sunday's series finale in Baltimore.

  • Padres' Freddy Fermin: Not starting Sunday

Fermin (head) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. Fermin was removed from Saturday's 9-3 win when he was hit in the mask by a Yuki Matsui warmup pitch in the sixth inning. The backstop was also previously removed from an April 15 game against Seattle after being hit in the mask. Fermin was evaluated for a concussion following his early exit Saturday, but the Padres haven't confirmed that he's experiencing any symptoms. Rodolfo Duran will get the start at catcher Sunday, and Blake Hunt has joined the Padres' taxi squad from Triple-A El Paso in case Fermin needs to go on the injured list.

  • Padres' Freddy Fermin: Exits after blow from warm-up pitch

Fermin was struck in the catcher's mask by a warmup pitch from Yuki Matsui during Saturday's game against Baltimore and subsequently departed the contest, Byron Kerr of MLB.com reports. Matsui's pitch before the beginning of the bottom of the sixth inning bounced in front of the plate and appeared to hit Fermin near the back of his head. He was examined by the Padres' trainer, and the decision was made to remove him from the contest. Rodolfo Duran entered in Fermin's stead and would be in line to take over as San Diego's primary catcher if Fermin needs to sit out for any period of time.

  • Padres' Freddy Fermin: Goes deep again in Sunday's loss

Fermin went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an RBI double in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Mets. Fermin drove in all of the Padres' runs, highlighted by a two-run homer on a center-cut fastball from Sean Manaea in the fifth inning. The backstop has now homered in consecutive games after failing to go deep in his first 45 appearances of the season. Despite hitting a lowly .147 with a .488 OPS in 126 plate appearances, Fermin has continued to operate as San Diego's primary catcher, especially with Luis Campusano (toe) sidelined since May 7.

  • Padres' Freddy Fermin: Hits go-ahead homer

Fermin went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Mets. Marcus Semien went yard in the top of the seventh inning to give the Mets a 2-1 lead, but Fermin's two-run blast swung the score back in favor of the Padres in their half of the frame. It's the first homer of the year for Fermin and his first hit of any kind since May 14 in Milwaukee. He's still playing regularly, though Rodolfo Duran has cut into Fermin's time a bit recently while the Padres wait for Luis Campusano (toe) to return. On the year, Fermin is hitting a paltry .133 with a .431 OPS, six RBI, 12 runs scored, four doubles and no stolen bases over 122 plate appearances.
