Blue Jays' Daulton Varsho: Back in action Friday

Varsho (illness) is starting in center field and batting fifth Friday against the Yankees.

The 28-year-old departed Wednesday's contest due to a heat-related illness, but he's back in the lineup Friday following Thursday's team off day. Varsho is coming off a rough July, as he had a .197/.287/.382 slash line and 27.3 percent strikeout rate in 25 games.

  • White Sox's Prelander Berroa: Recalled from Triple-A

The White Sox recalled Berroa from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

Berroa has spent virtually all of the 2024 season with Charlotte, putting up a 6.69 ERA and 45:28 K:BB over 40.1 innings. The hard-throwing righty made one appearance with the White Sox back in April, hitting one batter with a pitch and retiring the other.

  • Drew Thorpe SP | CHW

White Sox's Drew Thorpe: Placed on IL with flexor strain

The White Sox placed Thorpe on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right flexor strain.

It's not clear when Thorpe was injured, but he had surrendered a combined 14 runs over his last two starts. Given the nature of the injury, the rookie right-hander could be in store for a lengthy absence. Thorpe has posted a 5.48 ERA and 25:21 K:BB over 44.1 innings in his first nine major-league starts.

  • Gerrit Cole SP | NYY

Yankees' Gerrit Cole: Throwing bullpen, may start Sunday

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Cole (fatigue) is throwing a bullpen session Friday and if all goes well should start Sunday against the Blue Jays, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

The 33-year-old was scratched from Tuesday's start against the Phillies due to general body fatigue, but he played catch with no issues Wednesday and is returning to mound work Friday. The Yankees have consistently downplayed any long-term concern for Cole this week, and he should have the chance to rejoin the rotation Sunday after skipping just one start.

  • Casey Mize SP | SD

Tigers' Casey Mize: Throwing live batting practice

Mize (hamstring) will throw a live batting practice session Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

It will be his first time facing hitters since going on the injured list in early July with a strained left hamstring. Mize will not be eligible for activation until early September after being shifted to the 60-day IL earlier this week.

  • Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: More activities this weekend

Carpenter (back) will take live batting practice Saturday and run the bases Sunday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Carpenter ran the bases at Comerica Park on Thursday and will continue to ramp things back up this weekend. A rehab assignment looks to be close, perhaps with one coming next week if he gets through his activities this weekend with no problems. Carpenter has been sidelined since late May with a lumbar spine stress fracture.

  • Max Kepler LF | ARI

Twins' Max Kepler: Not in Friday's lineup

Kepler (head) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox.

Kepler exited Wednesday's contest due to a head injury after he was hit in the helmet on an attempted throw to second base, and he'll be out of the starting nine for at least one game. Matt Wallner will receive a start in right field against Chicago right-hander Davis Martin on Friday.

  • Matt Krook RP | WAS

Orioles' Matt Krook: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Orioles outrighted Krook to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

  • Livan Soto SS | BAL

Orioles' Livan Soto: Sent back down

Twins' Ryan Jeffers: Out of Minnesota lineup

Jeffers is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the White Sox.

He and Christian Vazquez continue to alternate starts at catcher, doing so now for the 14th straight game. Jeffers has just a .561 OPS since the beginning of June.
