  • C.J. Abrams SS | WAS

Nationals' CJ Abrams: Continues to shine at top of order

Abrams went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs scored in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals.

The 22-year-old accounted for half of Washington's hits on the afternoon. Abrams has flipped the switch in July, producing seven multi-hit performances in 11 games and slashing .395/.435/.628 with seven steals, three doubles, two triples and a homer. He's hit safely in six straight games since moving into the leadoff spot for the Nationals, batting .480 (12-for-25) and scoring eight runs, and he appears to be on the brink of a breakout second half.

  • Bobby Witt SS | KC

Royals' Bobby Witt: Homers again in win

Witt went 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple and three RBI in Sunday's 8-4 win over the Rays.

Witt knocked in a pair of runs with his second-inning triple and added the solo shot in the fifth. All four of his hits over the last three games have gone for extra bases, and he's on a seven-game hitting streak. The shortstop is slashing .259/.301/.463 with 16 long balls, 51 RBI, 50 runs scored and 27 stolen bases through 93 contests. He's also tied with Shohei Ohtani for the major-league lead with six triples.

  • Padres' Xander Bogaerts: Smacks 11th homer

Bogaerts went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's extra-innings loss to the Phillies.

Bogaerts tagged Zack Wheeler for a solo shot in the fourth frame, pushing his season total to 11, which stands ninth among shortstops. In the month of July (12 games), Bogaerts is batting .255 with three homers, eight RBI and four multi-hit performances.

  • J.P. Crawford SS | SEA

Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Perfect day at plate

Crawford went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and a walk in Sunday's win over Detroit.

Crawford doubled and scored in the first inning and later knocked his 20th double of the year. He'd been stuck in a 5-for-23 (.217) run since his last multi-hit game July 5, but he's still hitting .370 this month. Crawford improved his season slash line to .258/.368/.402 with 28 extra-base hits and 48 runs scored through 362 plate appearances.

  • Nick Ahmed SS | TEX

Diamondbacks' Nick Ahmed: Doubles, steals, scores in loss

Ahmed went 1-for-2 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Blue Jays.

Ahmed doubled, stole third and raced home on a wild pitch in the second inning to give Arizona an early 2-0 lead, the only time the Diamondbacks held a lead during a three-game sweep by Toronto. Ahmed was later pinch hit for against righty Trevor Richards. The switch-hitting Geraldo Perdomo gets the bulk of the starts at shortstop, with Ahmed typically in the lineup against lefties only.

  • Jeremy Pena SS | HOU

Astros' Jeremy Pena: Out of lineup Sunday

Pena (hamstring) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels.

Pena left Saturday's game after appearing to tweak something during his at-bat in the 10th inning. Manager Dusty Baker confirmed after the game that it's a hamstring issue for Pena, though he was optimistic that it was just a cramp, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Grae Kessinger will get a turn at shortstop with Pena banged up.

  • Bobby Witt SS | KC

Royals' Bobby Witt: Solid in twin bill

Witt went 2-for-8 with a solo home run and a double across both games of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Rays.

He's hit safely in 10 of 11 games in July, batting .357 with three homers, four stolen bases and nine RBI this month. It's another step forward after the talented shortstop had a strong June to offset his slower start to the season. Witt is slashing .257/.299/.449 with 15 homers, 27 steals, 48 RBI and 49 runs scored through 92 contests overall.

  • Pablo Reyes RF | SD

Red Sox's Pablo Reyes: Not yet activated

Reyes (abdomen) is expected to play shortstop in a rehab game Sunday for Double-A Portland, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Reyes has appeared in six games during a rehab assignment and is 8-for-21 with three home runs and seven RBI for Portland. He's seen time at second base, designated and center field prior to his expected start at shortstop Sunday. Following Sunday's game, Boston manager Alex Cora said the organization will reassess the roster. Reyes is out of minor-league options and can't be assigned directly to Triple-A or Double-A, so if the Red Sox want to add him to the major-league roster, Cora must decide which player would be cut. The main candidates for a demotion would appear to be fellow infielders Christian Arroyo and Enrique Hernandez.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Heads to bench Sunday

Perdomo is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays.

A surprise All-Star this season -- he was named as an injury replacement for Dansby Swanson (heel) -- Perdomo will sit in favor of Nick Ahmed at shortstop with lefty Yusei Kikuchi on the mound for Toronto. The switch-hitting Perdomo has logged just 36 plate appearances against left-handed pitching this season. He's been leading off lately against opposing right-handers.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Snaps out of funk

Perdomo went 3-for-4 in Saturday's 5-2 loss to Toronto.

Perdomo's three-hit effort came after a brutal stretch for the shortstop. He entered the game with just two hits over the previous 31 at-bats. The run of futility reached 32 at-bats before an infield single in the third inning. Much of those struggles came as Arizona's primary leadoff batter against right-handers; however, Perdomo maintains a respectable .274/.367/.310 line atop the order in 2023.
