Osleivis Basabe SS | SF
Rays' Osleivis Basabe: Settling into role
Basabe went 2-for-5 with a run scored Friday against the Angels.
Basabe has started all five games at shortstop since being promoted by the Rays and has consistently hit in the bottom third of the order. Friday's performance marked the first multi-hit performance of his career, and he's gone 4-for-19 overall. Basabe also has seven strikeouts and only one extra-base hit, though it appears that he'll have the chance to work through any additional development at the big-league level.

Noelvi Marte 3B | CIN
Reds' Noelvi Marte: Earns major-league call-up
Marte was called up by the Reds on Saturday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Marte joined the Reds organization at the 2022 trade deadline in a deal which sent Luis Castillo to Seattle. The 21-year-old has split time between shortstop and third base at the two levels of the minors this season, posting an identical .820 OPS at both stops while adding 11 homers and 18 steals in 89 games. The Reds have a crowded infield after the arrival of several top prospects this season, though Jonathan India's plantar fasciitis means at-bats are available at least in the short term for Marte to show what he can do.

Trevor Story SS | BOS
Red Sox's Trevor Story: Out of lineup
Story will be on the bench for Saturday's game against the Yankees.
Story sits for just the second time in 11 games since returning from elbow surgery. He hasn't exactly hit the ground running after his long absence, slashing .200/.243/.314 after going hitless in his last four games. Pablo Reyes will fill in at shortstop.

C.J. Abrams SS | WAS
Nationals' CJ Abrams: Clubs 12th homer
Abrams went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Friday's 8-7 win over the Phillies.
He supplied the big blow in a six-run fourth inning by taking Michael Lorenzen deep. Abrams has slowed down in August, batting just .179 (7-for-39) over his last 11 games, but he's still taken a big step forward in 2023, posting a .293/.351/.457 slash line in 34 contests as the Nationals' leadoff hitter with five of his 12 homers and 20 of his 33 steals on the season.

Masyn Winn SS | STL
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Grabs hit in debut
Winn went 1-for-4 in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Mets.
Winn started at shortstop and knocked his first hit, a single, in the fifth inning. The top prospect has looked major-league ready for much of the year after slashing .288/.359/.474 with 18 home runs, 17 stolen bases and 61 RBI over 105 games with Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals will likely do everything to preserve his rookie status for 2024, which means he cannot accrue 130 at-bats. While Winn is likely to see the bulk of the time at shortstop, his playing time is likely to be managed by keeping him at or near the bottom of the order for the remainder of the season.

The 22-year-old shortstop improved his season slash line to .264/.300/.439 with 44 extra-base hits and 61 runs scored over 115 games.

Bobby Witt SS | KC
Royals' Bobby Witt: Pops go-ahead homer
Witt went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Friday's 4-3 victory over the Cubs.
Witt's long ball off Jameson Taillon in the top of the sixth inning was the big hit of the game, turning a one-run deficit for the Royals into a one-run advantage and they held serve the rest of the way. The young shortstop has already reached 30 stolen bases and now needs just six home runs for a 30-30 campaign.

Javier Baez SS | DET
Tigers' Javier Baez: Activated from bereavement list
Baez was activated from the bereavement list ahead of the second half of Friday's doubleheader in Cleveland.
Baez missed the first half of the Tigers' twin bill against the Guardians as he made his way back from Puerto Rico, where he was attending funeral services for his grandfather. Isan Diaz was optioned to Triple-A Toledo to clear out space on the roster for Baez's return.

Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Batting ninth in debut
Winn is starting at shortstop and batting ninth in his major-league debut Friday versus the Mets.

With the 21-year-old occupying shortstop and Lars Nootbaar (abdomen) on the injured list, Tommy Edman is starting in center field Friday.
