  • Brayan Rocchio SS | CLE

Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Fills in at shortstop

Rocchio started at shortstop and went 2-for-3 with a walk in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Royals.

Rocchio made a second consecutive start at shortstop with Gabriel Arias nursing a wrist injury. Arias will play through the injury while the Guardians compete for a playoff spot, but it's unclear what level of activity he can tolerate. Rocchio, who has been the primary second baseman, may see more action at shortstop going forward. His season numbers are negatively skewed by an unproductive first two months (.530 OPS), which prompted a demotion to the minors. Since returning to the majors July 1, Rocchio's been much better, slashing .276/.330/.412 over 63 games.

  • Gabriel Arias SS | CLE

Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Will play through injury

Arias (wrist) will play through his injury while the Guardians continue a push for a postseason spot, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Arias consulted with the team's medical staff and hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham, and it was determined he could play through the issue. Arias initially injured the wrist in a win over the Mariners on Aug. 29 and aggravated the issue Monday. He's sat the two games since with Brayan Rocchio filling in at shortstop.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Jumps early on Giants

Perdomo went 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run, two RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Giants.

Perdomo put San Francisco on its back foot early, connecting on a leadoff homer in the first inning and then delivering a run-scoring single on his next at-bat one inning later. Despite a recent four-hit game, the shortstop's bat has been relatively quiet since the end of August; he entered Wednesday's game 8-for-47 (.170) over the previous 12 contests. The slump does nothing to diminish Perdomo's contributions in the second half, as he's slashed .319/.406/.465 since the All-Star break and is up to 18 home runs, 93 RBI and 25 steals over 146 games.

  • Mookie Betts RF | LAD

Dodgers' Mookie Betts: Continues late-season surge

Betts with 4-for-5 with a grand slam and an RBI double in Wednesday's 9-0 victory versus the Rockies.

Betts contributed to a four-run Los Angeles second inning with a double that drove home Shohei Ohtani. Betts then broke the game open with a grand slam that made the score 8-0 in the eighth inning. The big game marked the fifth straight multi-RBI effort by the talented shortstop. Extending further, Betts has reached base in 16 consecutive contests, batting .381 (24-for-63) with five homers, 17 RBI and nine runs scored over that span.

  • Carlos Correa SS | HOU

Astros' Carlos Correa: Records 200th career homer

Correa went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Toronto.

Correa blasted his 13th homer of the season and the 200th of his excellent career. The slugging infielder now has at least one hit in eight of his first nine outings in September. Correa had a middling .705 OPS for the Twins this year, but he's slashing .297/.354/.455 with six long balls, five doubles, 19 RBI and 18 runs scored over 158 plate appearances for the Astros to improve his OPS to .737 for the campaign.

  • Zachary Neto SS | LAA

Angels' Zach Neto: Slugs 26th homer

Neto went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Twins.

The shortstop took Taj Bradley deep in the third inning, Neto's 26th long ball of the season and his fifth in the last 16 games. Despite the power surge, he's batting just .207 (12-for-58) over that stretch with a 5:21 BB:K as he stumbles toward the finish line on the campaign.

  • Ryan Ritter SS | COL

Rockies' Ryan Ritter: Absent from Wednesday's lineup

Ritter (undisclosed) is not in the Rockies' starting lineup against the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Ritter left in the ninth inning of Monday's contest due to an unspecified injury and was withheld from the starting nine Tuesday. Orlando Arcia will start at the keystone and bat ninth in Wednesday's series finale.

  • Masyn Winn SS | STL

    Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Sitting Wednesday

Winn (knee) isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Winn is expected to continue to play through a meniscus tear in his right knee that will require surgery during the offseason, but the Cardinals will keep him on the bench Wednesday for a third straight game. Thomas Saggese will start at shortstop for St. Louis while Jose Fermin mans the keystone; meanwhile, Winn will aim to return to the starting nine Friday in Milwaukee.

  • Anthony Volpe SS | NYY

Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Starting job no longer secure

Volpe is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Tigers, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he's "in day-to-day mode" in terms of his decision on who will start at shortstop, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.

Boone said Tuesday that Volpe remained his starting shortstop, but he seemed to back off that declaration a day later, noting that Jose Caballero -- who is drawing the start at the position Wednesday -- is also in the mix for regular reps at shortstop. Volpe is slashing just .125/.135/.222 with a 29:1 K:BB over his last 21 games and has had numerous defensive lapses.

  • Gabriel Arias SS | CLE

Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Sitting again Wednesday

Arias (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals.

Arias will miss a second straight start after departing Monday's 10-2 win due to right wrist inflammation. He is considered day-to-day. Brayan Rocchio will again shift over to shortstop, and Daniel Schneemann will handle second base for the Guardians.
